SKOWHEGAN, Maine - A 43-year-old woman is charged with helping her daughter and two other teenage girls bake cookies laced with a laxative that were then given to a teacher.
Julie Hunt appeared in Skowhegan District Court on Monday and pleaded innocent to a charge of misdemeanor assault.
Hunt was arrested Friday after a police investigation into the attempted prank at Carrabec Community School in Anson that sickened four seventh- and eighth-grade children.
The cookies, which were baked with Ex-Lax, were left on the teacher's desk on April 10 with a note saying, "We made these cookies just for you, hope you enjoy them."
According to a police affidavit, Hunt told the girls how to crush the laxative pills and mix them in with the cookie batter. The girls, who are 13 and 14, used an entire box of pills, the affidavit says.
Mary Adley, the principal of the school, called police on April 24 after hearing two girls talking about the incident.
Maine State Police Lt. Dale Lancaster said that the girls were not facing criminal charges. The affidavit said all three girls were suspended by school officials.
But Hunt's involvement could not be overlooked, Lancaster said.
"If you assist children with perpetrating these kinds of crimes, you will be charged," he said.

Regarding the words of cardinal Francis Arinze, about the Da Vinci Code. may 10
That man would surely make a ideal despot dictator in some backwater country where he can censor everything.
I wonder if he has the attitude that if your not christian you dont deserve to live.
As far as i am aware the Da Vinci code is a work of fiction, Yes i have read the book, and found it very entertaining.
Now, i wonder if i can sue the church if it offends me , allows a loved one to die, or my boat to burn.
he says it offends christ and the church... mm well i haven't heard or seen any tv interview or news article where christ has stated he/she is offended. Wonder if he only told the good cardinal that??
To finish, i would like to say, I believe in god and the basic doctrines of the christian faith , i was once a church secretary. The Da vinci Code has not in any way shaken that faith.. but the church as an institution no longer interests me because... example.. the good cardinals words and attitude, which i regard as just damned dumb and does nothing to enhance the reputation of the church.

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.
Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy

Ok -- you forced me into it. I tried to stay out of it, but you just wouldn't let me.
If we assume that the Catholic church exists to give moral guidance and direction, and they do that, how can that be censorship? Isn't that exactly what you have asked them into your life to do? Isn't that exactly what this guy is doing?
If you are not part of the Catholic church, as you say, then why does the guidance given to me, as a member of the church, upset you so much? If I choose willingly to align myself with a group that imposes rules upon my behavior, isn't that my option? Why would it bother you?
If you want to argue the issues surrounding the DaVinci Code, that is an appropriate discussion -- but to turn that into a referendum on the role of the church in a person's life might be stretching it just a little.

Amid extinctions, parrots, panthers get costly aidThu May 11, 2006 9:14am ET
By Alister Doyle, Environment Correspondent
OSLO (Reuters) - Australia's orange-bellied parrot and the Florida panther are in an exclusive but growing club -- rare species getting costly protection even as the world faces what may be the worst wave of extinctions since the dinosaurs.
Governments in rich nations sometimes write virtual blank checks to protect exotic animals -- even as thousands of less glamorous creatures and plants slide silently into oblivion.
Many experts say it is impossible to set a ceiling on the value of a species and that willingness to pay may be widening, posing risks for businesses like mining, industry or logging that affect the habitats of rare animals or plants.
"Willingness to pay is related to wealth," said Don Coursey, a professor in public policy studies at the University of Chicago. "As world wealth tends to grow, willingness to pay to protect species is growing even faster."
Coursey once wrote a report estimating it cost $4.9 million per creature to protect the endangered Florida panther -- the most expensive U.S. protection scheme and more than many insurers pay for a human life.
The California condor was second at $1.6 million per bird.
PARROTS VS WINDMILLS
In April, the Australian government vetoed a $200 million wind energy project in the southern state of Victoria to protect the rare orange-bellied parrot. "I'm required under the law to put in place a recovery plan to make sure that the bird does not go extinct," Environment Minister Ian Campbell told Australian radio.
Even so, one study showed the threat from the windmill project was one dead parrot every 1,000 years.
In one of the most costly examples, animal lovers paid $20 million to retrain Keiko the killer whale, star of the "Free Willy" movies, for life in the wild. Keiko died of pneumonia in a Norwegian fjord in 2003, 18 months after he was freed.
(Glad to see those folks are protecting the panthers) ;)

Once again, we react without benefit of full knowledge of what was really going on. This is not a new story -- it is an attempt to stir up the old story.
NSA, acting in accordance with the Foreign Intelligence Act, requested from the telephone companies the records of all phone numbers that had contacted a pre-determined set of phone numbers known to be foreign operatives outside the United States. To do this, the phone companies had to review tens of millions of phone records to identify the connections. They use a reporting system called Hawkeye to accomplish this.
The phone companies do this type of review on a regular basis for law enforcement agencies, usually based on a court order. Since the Attorney General has ruled that a court order is NOT required for cases of espionage outside the country, a court order was not generated.
Once again, the media has failed to release all the facts in order to get a more sensational story that will sell. They call it "yellow journalism". To see a prime example, listen to ABC news and listen to the descriptor words that are used. See if you think they are fair and balanced, or if they are trying to influence your thought process.

It is heartening to see that the Government is more concerned about the orange bellied parrot than it is about the economic impact of not having suffiicient energy production. Don't complain about the cost of emergy -- you elected them.

Shanghai Preparing for 'Human Zoo'
SHANGHAI, China - Shanghai is getting set to open a "human zoo."
Four Australian men will live in a glass box on a downtown mall for two weeks in June, with the public able to watch them sleeping, eating and bathing, a news report said Thursday.
The group, known as the Urban Dream Capsule, has drawn crowds with similar displays in London, Montreal, Hong Kong and other cities.
"They won't turn off the lights or pull down the curtains. They show their whole life, from getting up to going to bed," Karen Chang, the event's organizer, told the Shanghai Daily newspaper.
"People like to watch them taking a shower, so they have to shower at least two times a day," Chang said. "Of course, one can't see the key parts, because there is nontransparent glass in the bathroom."
The 650-square-foot glass capsule is to be decorated in a Shanghainese theme.
Members of the group have been taking Chinese lessons so that they can communicate with spectators, the report said. The public can send e-mail or faxes to them, or put messages on the glass.
"Interaction is a key element of the performance," Chang said.
A service of the Associated Press(AP)
(Doesn't appear they've set this up yet in any U.S. malls..... could be a big attraction though... maybe even bigger than paintball.)

President Bush, responding to a newspaper report on a previously undisclosed program to track the phone call patterns of millions of Americans, insisted today that U.S. intelligence activities he has authorized are lawful and aimed strictly at the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
In a hastily arranged appearance before reporters at the White House, Bush reacted to a USA Today report that says the National Security Agency has been secretly using records provided by the three largest American telephone companies to build a massive database of foreign and domestic phone calls. The program was launched shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with the aim of analyzing calling patterns to detect terrorist activity, the paper reported. The effort involves collecting phone numbers but does not entail recording or eavesdropping on phone conversations, it said.

Thank you, WB -- you are exactly correct. Telephone companies have kept connection records for 50 years -- I think the one thing everybody misses is that they are NOT recording conversations. The connections are recorded -- that is, the fact that your phone called mine. Telephone companies keep the data for troubleshooting purposes in the event of the problem.
NSA has asked the telephone companies to identify the phones which have called specific known Al Quaeda phone numbers. Thus, they would know that I called Osama Bin Laden, but they have no way of knowing what was said. Once it is determined that I have called Osama, the FBI goes to court and gets a court order to tap my phone based on probable cause. Then, and only then, will they know that Osama and I are old school buddies.
It is NOT 1984 -- Big Brother is NOT listening to your phone calls. The paranoia generated by the intentional deletion of key facts by the media is caused by a complete lack of understanding of exactly what is happening.

Nobody listens to your phone calls, unless they have a court order!!! Your right to privacy is not being violated - you are overstating what is happening. The computer is simply looking for calls between a specific set of phone numbers, and lists who has called those numbers - not what is said.

Too often very little was accomplished and too often there were members that were appointed for no specific purpose and who had the wrong or misguided motivation for being there.
Damn -- you go to the same meetings I do ???

It's already happened to people, sadly. A friend of a friend of mine had this happen to him because he sent out an email that contained threatening language against the president. He wasn't arrested but he had equipment confiscated by FBI types and was threatened.
Sir: If what you say is true, there has been an abuse of power. The only way the FBI is able to confiscate something is if it is part of an ongoing investigatiion, and even then, they must have a warrant signed by the convening court.
If you would please email the name of the friend of the friend, I will be happy to turn it over to people who can investigate, and would be just tickled pink to catch the FBI doing something like this. If you don't know his name, just give me the name of the friend who knows the friend, and I can assure you it will be investigated in the bright light of network news.

Terrorist are using throw away cell phones. The only people being affected by this are regular Americans.
Why are they using throw away cell phones, Penny? Because the Washington Post published that NSA was monitoring regular cell phones - a fact that was classified, and caused a certain senator (he's from your area, I believe) to be fired from the Senate Intelligence Committee for leaking classified information.

I haven't seen this cardinal yet Tiger but I have seen a few christian groups embarrasing themselves on t.v by implying this movie is blasphemy. Its a work of fiction and a hollywood movie. There have been other movies the church has tried to cash in on. Any publicity they get these days not involving scandals is good news for them. I remember they loved the Mel Gibson movie "passion of Christ" and the synagogs found this movie offensive. The church turned out and booked theatres all over America to help promote the film. It was all good publicity.
Your letter was good Tiger lets just hope it isn't what they want.

I understand many people's reluctance whan it comes to eavesdropping and surveillance. I have some experience in this area having spent a number of years in a position where I was responsible for obtaining funding and justifying expenditures of tax dollars for these types of programs to Legislative and Congressional committees. I was also responsible for ensuring that investigators involved in this type of activity did not abuse their authority by infringing on civil liberties unlawfully and I can assure you I took that very seriously and those Legislative and Congressional committees were tough on us..... as they should be.
Eavesdropping and physical surveillance of individuals where probable cause exists that they are involved in serious illegal activity has been going on legally for decades. This is absolutely nothing new. I'm personally confident that the Federal authorities responsible for monitoring activity by terrorists that threaten each and every one of us are concentrating their efforts on that threat and are not interested in your personal phone conversations. If most people new how much manpower, time and money it takes to monitor just a few phones where probable cause has been developed that they are being used for communication related to serious criminal activity, they wouldn't be concerned about governments interest in who the average person talks to.

Three 6th Graders Found With Pot
WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) -- Three sixth-grade students face drug charges for having marijuana at school.
And additional students may be arrested, school district police chief Mark Kissell said.
The boys, who are students at Chapman Intermediate School, were arrested Tuesday, Cherokee County district spokesman Mike McGowan said.
A 12-year-old student brought the marijuana to school and gave it to two classmates, ages 11 and 12, Kissell said.
The boys have been released to their parents.

I started to say that I didn't agree the we/us/society is at fault - after all, raising and shaping that child is the responsibility of the parents. But then, I decided that ffox is right (that hurt!) -- society IS at fault. We are at fault for allowing parents to abdicate their responsbility as parents. We are at fault for creating programs in our schools that allow parents to shift the onus to the school, and relieve themselves of the responsibility. We are at fault for creating programs that forgive parents for not working, for not supporting their families, for not being held responsible for consequences of their actions, both as parents and as adults.
This problem can be stopped -- take the parents out into the streets, horsewhip them, and send a message to other parents. There should be no government aid or assistance to raise this child. The parents of both the boy and girl involved should be responsible for raising it. When a child commits a crime, BOTH the parent and the child go to jail. When a child goes to court, BOTH the parent and the child will be on trial.
Nobody accepts responsbility unless they have to. We accept responsibility because we realize the consequences if we don't. If there are no consequences, there can be no assignment of responsibility.

That is all so true. I was beginning to think I was the only one with radical ideas. I think the minute you start accepting welfare both the mother and father of the children need to be fixed so there are no more kids. I also think once the kids get taken away because the parents are losers they should automatically loose all paternal rights. I also think that druggies should be fixed so that they can't have kids to be born addicted to drugs. Just a few thoughts.

What you suggest COULD exist, but let's consider the logistics. If there are 890,000 phone calls a minute, there is no way you could screen all of them trying to pick up "keywords". However, if you had a specific set of phone numbers -- ohhh, say, known Al Quaeda operatives in the US -- you could assign the computer to listen for any conversation containing that keyword.

Bikini protester charms Chavez From REUTERS.
VIENNA (Reuters) - A bikini-clad beauty queen protesting plans for a pulp mill in Uruguay pushed into a photo shoot of European and Latin American leaders at a summit on Friday and Venezuela's president said he blew her a kiss.
Evangelina Carrozo, Greenpeace activist and carnival queen from the Argentine town of Gualeguaychu, evaded security as she stripped to a tasselled bikini and thigh-high leather boots carrying a sign protesting plans for the pulp mill.
"She was very pretty and I blew her a kiss," said Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, who spoke to reporters in Vienna after security ejected Carrozo from the room where the joint summit photo was taken.
"It was one of the best things that have happened at this summit," said Chavez, a left-winger who has become an icon of the anti-globalisation movement but has been criticised by other Latin American leaders in Vienna for his confrontational style.
Argentina has called for Uruguay to drop plans for the $1.7 billion pulp project along the Uruguay river that borders both countries, saying it will cause pollution.
The mills are being built by Finland's Metsa-Botnia and Spain's Ence.
Chavez said: "I didn't see anything about pulp, I was just looking at her."

Bush May Widen National Guard Patrols at Border
President Bush will push next week for a broad overhaul of the nation's immigration laws and plans to tighten security on the borders, possibly with a wider deployment of the National Guard, White House officials said yesterday.
The officials said Bush will use a prime-time television address Monday to outline his plans and then visit the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday to highlight the problem of illegal immigration.

DENVER - Former Qwest Communications CEO Joseph Nacchio refused to share customer telephone records with the National Security Agency because of authorities did not want to use "any legal process" to justify their request, Nacchio's attorney said Friday.
The CEO was worried that cooperating with the NSA without a court order or warrant would violate federal privacy laws, said Nacchio's attorney, Herbert Stern.
"When he learned that no such authority had been granted and that there was a disinclination on the part of the authorities to use any legal process, including the Special Court which had been established to handle such matters, Mr. Nacchio concluded that these requests violated the privacy requirements of the Telecommunications Act," Stern said.

I believe there is a very large majority of the American population that is not represented by either party today. Not only are they not represented, but they are actually used and abused by the powers in place today.
But --- a new party? Idealistically, yes. It would be an amazing political and social force. Realistically, no. Politics today has very little to do with ideals and platforms and programs. Instead, it is all about money - who can buy the most advertising time, who can print the most brochures, who can hold the most rallies. A grass-roots effort could never generate enough money to become a viable political power.
But -- I sure wish it was possible.

Tenn. Man: Police 'Pushed' Accused Son
KINGSTON, Tenn. (AP) - The father of two brothers accused in the deadly ambush of a sheriff's deputy and a friend says authorities have continually harassed his sons.
"They pushed them as far as they could," Clyde Houston told The Knoxville News Sentinel on Friday. "They pushed them over the bank. You kick a dog so long, he'll bite you."
Leon Houston, 47, and his brother, Rocky, 46, are accused of fatally shooting Deputy Bill Jones and his friend, Mike Brown, as they pulled up to Leon Houston's home Thursday to serve felony warrants on the two brothers. The charges contained in the warrants have not been disclosed.
The deputy returned fire, but Brown wasn't armed. Rocky Houston was shot in the hip and wrist. He was arrested at a hospital and transferred to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where he was in stable condition and under guard.
Leon Houston was apprehended Friday after a full day on the run.
District Attorney General Scott McCluen said he plans to submit the case to a grand jury in June.
Neighbors said the Houstons had been patrolling the borders of their property with assault rifles around their necks for the past week.
A former security guard at the Department of Energy's research and weapons installations in Oak Ridge, Rocky Houston was fired in 2003 for a "pattern of behavior" that included threatening judges, failing to appear in court, disorderly conduct, and barricading himself in his home for four days before a SWAT team was called in to bring him out.
According to an affidavit, Rocky Houston became enraged during a hearing over a traffic ticket in 2001 and warned the judge, "Watch yourself and watch your family. If you thought Waco was something then you haven't seen (expletive) yet."
But Clyde Houston, a former county commissioner who ran unsuccessfully for sheriff in 1986, said Friday that his son didn't threaten the judge and contends that authorities embarked on a campaign of harassment.
Roane County Sheriff David Haggard dismissed the allegations, saying Jones was doing his duty as a police officer at the time of the shooting.
"We were just out to enforce the law," he said, "and serve the warrants that were taken out on them."

A more than 40 percent surge in global M&A volumes last year is one reason the 100 biggest U.S. law firms increased their gross revenues by more than 10 percent to almost $51 billion, according to The American Lawyer magazine.
Editor in Chief Aric Press said M&A is very good business for the lawyers involved.
"Law firms like wherever possible to get a fee that is something more than their hourly billing -- to get a premium," Press said.

Investors pushed almost every major stock market index down more than 1 percent as lower-than-expected earnings from travel Web site Expedia Inc. capped a week of disappointing profits and outlooks from technology companies.
Economic data also failed to dispel investors' worries about rising inflation and interest rates, which on Thursday sparked stocks' biggest decline in nearly four months.

U.S. military troops with severe psychological problems have been sent to Iraq or kept in combat, even when superiors have been aware of signs of mental illness, a newspaper reported for Sunday editions.
The Hartford Courant, citing records obtained under the federal Freedom of Information Act and more than 100 interviews of families and military personnel, reported numerous cases in which the military failed to follow its own regulations in screening, treating and evacuating mentally unfit troops from Iraq.
In 1997, Congress ordered the military to assess the mental health of all deploying troops. The newspaper, citing Pentagon statistics, said fewer than 1 in 300 service members were referred to a mental health professional before shipping out for Iraq as of October 2005.
Twenty-two U.S. troops committed suicide in Iraq last year, accounting for nearly one in five of all non-combat deaths and was the highest suicide rate since the war started, the newspaper said.
‘Chemically active time bombs’
Some service members who committed suicide in 2004 and 2005 were kept on duty despite clear signs of mental distress, sometimes after being prescribed antidepressants with little or no mental health counseling or monitoring. Those findings conflict with regulations adopted last year by the Army that caution against the use of antidepressants for “extended deployments.”
“I can’t imagine something more irresponsible than putting a soldier suffering from stress on (antidepressants), when you know these drugs can cause people to become suicidal and homicidal,” said Vera Sharav, president of the Alliance for Human Research Protection. “You’re creating chemically activated time bombs.”
Although Defense Department standards for enlistment disqualify recruits who suffer “persistent post-traumatic symptoms,” the military also is redeploying service members to Iraq who fit that criteria, the newspaper said.
“I’m concerned that people who are symptomatic are being sent back. That has not happened before in our country,” said Dr. Arthur S. Blank, Jr., a Yale-trained psychiatrist who helped to get post-traumatic stress disorder recognized as a diagnosis after the Vietnam War.
‘Recruiting has been a challenge’
The Army’s top mental health expert, Col. Elspeth Ritchie, acknowledged that some deployment practices, such as sending service members diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome back into combat, have been driven in part by a troop shortage.
“The challenge for us ... is that the Army has a mission to fight. And, as you know, recruiting has been a challenge,” she said. “And so we have to weigh the needs of the Army, the needs of the mission, with the soldiers’ personal needs.”
Ritchie insisted the military works hard to prevent suicides, but is a challenge because every soldier has access to a weapon.
Commanders, not medical professionals, have final say over whether a troubled soldier is retained in the war zone. Ritchie and other military officials said they believe most commanders are alert to mental health problems and are open to referring troubled soldiers for treatment.
“Your average commander doesn’t want to deal with a whacked-out soldier. But on the other hand, he doesn’t want to send a message to his troops that if you act up, he’s willing to send you home,” said Maj. Andrew Efaw, a judge advocate general officer in the Army Reserves who handled trial defense for soldiers in northern Iraq last year.

Unhappy voters tick off a list of offenses — some national, others local — in a swing state critical to deciding what party controls Congress for President Bush’s last two years and to shaping the presidential race in 2008.

Twelve years ago, President Clinton’s approval ratings were in the 30-percent range statewide and Democratic Sen. Harris Wofford’s popularity had dropped.

Adult film studio offers downloads to DVDs
Starting Monday, Vivid Entertainment to sell films through online service
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood has been tiptoeing its way toward letting consumers buy a movie online, burn it onto a DVD and watch it on a living-room TV.
While the studios hesitate, the adult film industry is taking the leap.
Starting Monday, Vivid Entertainment says it will sell its adult films through the online movie service CinemaNow, allowing buyers to burn DVDs that will play on any screen, not just a computer.
It's another first for adult film companies that pioneered the home video market and rushed to the Internet when Hollywood studios still saw it as a threat.
"Leave it to the porn industry once again to take the lead on this stuff," said Michael Greeson, founder of The Diffusion Group, a consumer electronics think tank in Plano, Texas.
"The rest of Hollywood stands back and watches and lets the pornography industry work out all the bugs," he said.
There are business and technology factors that make it easier for adult film companies to embrace new technology faster than traditional media.
On the business side, Hollywood makes more money offering films on DVDs than in theaters. As a result, studios are hesitant to anger large retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Blockbuster by selling DVD-ready downloads directly to consumers.
Recently, most of the big studios have started selling films over the Web, including on CinemaNow, which is partly owned by the film studio Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., Microsoft Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and Blockbuster Inc. Consumers can burn a backup DVD, but it can only be played by a computer, not a DVD player.
The adult film industry doesn't face the same business challenges.
"We don't have to divvy up the pie," said Bill Asher, co-chairman and co-owner of Vivid Entertainment, the largest distributor of adult entertainment. "We sell in smaller stores, mainstream chains, but no one dominant component where we're going to get that phone call."
There are also technical issues for Hollywood to resolve.
To prevent piracy, studios now use what's known as the "content scrambling system," or CSS, to keep consumers from copying DVDs and sending the files around the Internet.
The system, which is easily circumvented, is built into every DVD player to block the playing of movies on discs burned by a computer.
That obstacle has been overcome in the design of high-definition DVDs, which are just now becoming available.
Both rival high-def brands, HD DVD and Blu-ray, use new protection schemes that allow DVDs burned in a computer to play on a DVD player. But it will be years before new players that accommodate those discs replace older models.
The studios say they are preparing to allow the online burning of DVDs for playing on TVs once the new high-definition players become widely adopted.
Vivid says its downloads, which will cost $19.95, do not use CSS. Instead, online retailer CinemaNow is using an alternate, proprietary system that it says will protect the adult movies by preventing the burned DVD from being copied to other discs.
"They built a better mousetrap," Asher said of CinemaNow.
Despite the challenges, mainstream studios are taking some risks and inching toward downloadable DVDs.
Both Warner Bros. and Universal Studios have launched hybrid programs overseas in which consumers who download films also get a DVD in the mail.
But the real goal, analysts say, is to pipe major Hollywood movies and TV shows over the Internet directly to TV sets, bypassing DVDs altogether.
"How about I just turn my set on and press 'go,'" Greeson said. "That's the holy grail."
Hollywood is moving slowly in that direction but must first devise ways to placate retailers, broadcast affiliate partners, movie theaters and others with bottom lines threatened by the move.
"The more they champion Internet distribution directly to the consumer, the more it seems they're turning their back on their old media partners, which they can't afford to do," Greeson said.
So yet again, unencumbered by such business roadblocks, the adult film industry could lead the way.
"The vanguard here is porn," Greeson said. "They made a tremendous amount of money on the Web, but they know they can make more if they get to the living room."
Just another thing to watch on the boob tube.....

It is crap how some societies are pushed by the minority to change and show how open we are to multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is fine but just do it our way is all we ask. Our country is far better than theirs and thats why they choose to immigrate. What ever it is we have going right needs to be continued as a society.
I liked when the French were having problems with their muslim community a year or two ago. Instead of bowing down they said we are sick of this clash of two communities. So in all their primary and high schools they banned the islamic headscaff and the showing of all religious jewelery. It says something about their majority of people and how they don't have to take shit from immigrants and they must do what is expected from the majority. Like it or leave kind of attitude..:sc

Seriously, though -- I am in favor of the deployment of troops. I am in favor of building the wall. I am in favor of putting razor concertina wire on top of the wall.

Well thats news to us, we understand from the media, 2007, however I will watch the news tonight. The sooner Tony Blair goes perhaps we can put this country back before these people come over. Personally I think its disgusting, they should be allowed to be allowed to enter and become eu citizens and get the same as the people here have but have had to work years for, putting it bluntly they are taking the piss and we should all stand up and say NO.

Protests follow attack on Turkish high court
Thousands march day after gunman kills judge in protest over controversial headscarf ruling.
By Tom Regan | csmonitor.com
Reuters reports Thursday that Turkish police have detained three men for questioning in connection with the shooting death of a high court judge connected to a controversial ruling on the wearing of headscarves.
The shooting occurred Wednesday when a Turkish lawyer opened fire in the country's top administrative court in Ankara, wounding four judges and killing a fifth. The lawyer was arrested.
The Guardian reports that the gunman, yelling "I am a soldier of Allah," used a handgun in the attack, which came during an administrative meeting.
The assailant, a lawyer accredited with the Istanbul bar association, later told police he carried out the attack because the court had stopped a woman becoming a head teacher on the grounds that she wore a headscarf.
TurkishPress.com, an independent Turkish news site, reports that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a press conference Thursday that the attack could not be justified in any way, although he refused to speculate on the headscarf issue.
Asked what he thinks on the attack on the Council of State after a decision made on a nursery teacher who was wearing a headscarf, Erdogan remarked that, no matter which side this attack came from, it must be strongly condemned. '"It is too early to state why the attack took place," indicated Erdogan ...
In response to a question by a Finnish journalist on whether his former comments on the decision of the Council of State on headscarf had an impact on today's attack, Erdogan replied that the case is being studied by Turkish police. "Associating today's attack with any side would not be right. We can not accept any incident designed to hurt stability in Turkey. Today's attack must be strongly condemned and cursed," told Erdogan.
Human Rights Watch, while noting that they believe the original ruling "clearly infringes on the woman's right to religious freedom," strongly condemned the attack, saying "violent attacks against civilian authorities are a grave violation of rights, not a defence of them." The Associated Press reports that on Thursday more than 15,000 people, including judges and lawyers, marched in the streets of Ankara to protest the shooting.
Turkey's military, which staged three coups between 1960 and 1980, is deeply uncomfortable with the government's position on the head scarf issue and what it sees as a creeping Islamization of society. "This is the Sept. 11 of the Turkish Republic," wrote Ertugrul Ozkok, chief columnist of Turkey's leading newspaper Hurriyet on Thursday. "One of the main pillars of the regime, justice, was being hit. This is an attack against all of us."
Several pro-secular newspapers also condemned the attack, while pro-Islamic media speculated that it would provoke a crackdown on the Islamic movement.
But The Independent of London reports that the well-known commentator Mehmet Ali Birand said the attack would not lead to a clash between Islamists and secularists, but that it was "a wake-up call for everybody."
The Washington Post reports that soon after the shooting, Turkey's president, Ahmet Necdet Sezer (a former judge), went to the court building and declared that "This attack is aimed at the unchangeable secular and democratic characters of the republic." When Mr. Erdogan arrived however, he was snubbed by court officials. Erdogan, who in the past has advocated political Islam, recently denounced the high court ruling on the scarf issue.
The shooting came with tensions already rising between Erdogan's populist Justice and Development Party and the secular establishment, which is anchored in the judiciary, the powerful military and the presidency of Sezer, whose term expires next year. Erdogan's party controls parliament, which will elect Sezer's successor, and Erdogan might seek the office first held by Turkey's secular founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Erdogan "is trying to open his way to the presidency," said Mehmet Farac, an expert on radical Islam at Cumhuriyet, a staunchly pro-secular daily. "However, the society is reacting to him taking the seat that belonged to Ataturk. The Islamic section reacts against this reaction. There may be new attacks."
Cumhuriyet has been bombed three times in recent weeks after running advertisements that accused Erdogan of undermining the republic.
The New York Times later reported that the gunman, Alparslan Arslan, identified himself as an ultranationalist and said he was not a member of any group. He was incensed by the debate about the issue in the media. The court's decision about the headscarf was a controversial one. In February of this year, the high court ruled that a school teacher could be denied a promotion to head mistress because she wore a headscarf while walking to and from the school, although she took it off in the classroom. Many critics saw this as an intrusion in her private life.
The Times of London reports that the shooting took place in the section of the top court that deals with educational issues, which are often sources of great tension between Turkey's Islamists and its hard-line secularists. Religious conservatives had been deeply angered by the headscarf ruling, and also by Erdogan because he has been unable to deliver on many of the issues that matter deeply to them. The attack may also play a role in Turkey's attempts to join the European Union.
The issue of headscarves has long been a difficult one in Turkey. Civil servants, students and staff at universities and schools, medical staff, and members of parliament cannot wear headscarfs because it is seen a breach of constitutional secularism. Although the ban has been in place since the '60s, it had only been since the late '90s that the deeply secular Turkish military has been pushing the government to enforce the ban. Emime Erdogan, the prime minister's wife, wears a headscarf, and recently the wife of Foreign Minister Abdul Gul was barred from enrolling at a government-run university because she also wears a headscarf.

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German woman left her friend as a deposit at a gas station because she did not have enough cash to pay for her petrol, police said Wednesday.
"She didn't have enough money to pay the bill, so her friend stayed behind as a human deposit while she went to withdraw cash," said a spokesman for police in the southern town of Muenchberg. "Unfortunately, the woman did not return."
Two hours after the 20-year-old driver left, the gas station called the police, who interrogated the stranded "deposit" before releasing her. Police are investigating the driver on suspicion of fraud.

NHK said if the missile was an advanced version of the Taepodong-2, it would have a firing range of 9,300 miles that could reach as far as the US mainland. Kyodo News agency carried a similar report.
US and South Korean officials have been concerned about a possible test of a Taepodong-2 missile, which analysts believe is capable of reaching parts of the western United States, though there are widespread doubts about its reach and accuracy.
North Korea shocked Japan in 1998 by blasting a Taepodong-1 missile over its territory and into the Pacific Ocean. The North said it was an attempt to put a satellite in orbit.
The possibility that such a missile might one day deliver a nuclear payload to Japan - which is separated from the North by less than 500 miles of open sea at some points - has pushed Tokyo to boost its defence capabilities.
In March 2003, Japan put its first two spy satellites into space as part of a £1.1billion project to watch North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes. It has also been working with the US to enhance its anti-missile defences.
Although North Korea announced a moratorium on long-range missile tests in 1999, it has since test-fired short-range missiles many times, including two launched into waters off its eastern coast in early March.
The North's missile capability has been one of the main security threats in north-east Asia, along with the communist country's nuclear weapons programme.

"We Can't Blame White People"
Wed, Sep. 7, 2005
by BILL COSBY
"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk:
Why you ain't, Where you is, What he drive, Where he stay, Where he work, Who you be...
And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk.
Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living. People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got theseknuckleheads walking around. The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal.
These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what? And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics. I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit.
Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol? And where is the father? Or who is his father?
People putting their clothes on backward: Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong?
People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something? Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?
What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.
Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem.
We have got to take the neighborhood back.
People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' -- or men or whatever you call them now. We have millionaire football players who cannot read.
We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us.
We have to start holding each other to a higher standard. We cannot blame the white people any longer."

WASHINGTON - Whether English is America’s “national language” or its national “common and unifying language” was a question dominating the Senate immigration debate.
The Senate first voted 63-34 to make English the national language after lawmakers who led the effort said it would promote national unity.
But critics argued the move would prevent limited English speakers from getting language assistance required by an executive order enacted under President Clinton. So the Senate also voted 58-39 to make English the nation’s “common and unifying language.”

'Happy Slapping' Spreads in London
By NICK WATT, ABCNews.com
(May 17) - The images are startling. For sale on the Internet are videos that have recorded hundreds of fights in Arlington, Texas. Some of the fights appear organized, and the participants willing. But many of them show surprised, randomly chosen victims.
What is not random is the fairly sophisticated marketing and distribution of the videos. Six teens have been arrested on felony charges in connection with the videotaped fights. They seem motivated more by financial gain than thrills. The underground fight video, "Agg Townz Fights 2," which was filmed mostly in Arlington, Texas, has been sold online.
While the Arlington videos and fights are largely motivated by money, explained Arlington Deputy Police Chief James Hawthorne, he said he is now beginning to hear from other communities around the country dealing with similar issues -- fights recorded on video and with cell phones, available on the internet.
The videos have hit a nerve in the local community, especially with school about to let out for the summer.
"Like most people, shocked, appalled, honestly, ashamed, embarrassed. They come from good homes, good backgrounds, but on the videos, their activities look to be barbaric" said Reverend Dwight McKissic of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington.
Chief Hawthorne said being shown in the videos has appealed to kids, who get some notoriety at school, and when the tapes are shown at parties. But what is a new activity in Texas is already a runaway hit in Great Britain.
It's a craze that has terrified many in London. Happy slapping, the practice of attacking random people by slapping or hitting them and then videotaping the event, has escalated in severity.
It can happen anywhere, anytime -- on the street, on the bus, in the classroom
One teenager -- it is usually a teenager -- attacks an unwitting passerby while another films the assault on a cell phone.
The clip then spreads like wildfire, presented as an amusing blooper sent from phone to phone, posted on the Internet or e-mailed.
Some of the assaults "Nightline" saw were real, some fake.
Just a bit of childish, harmless fun, right?
"This isn't happy. It's not funny. Would you like your mother to see you in that position?" said Siobhan Christmas, whose son, Triston, was attacked in February."Would you? It's nothing more than glorified bullying."
"Nightline" met Siobhan Christmas at a cemetery just outside London, at the grave of her 18-year-old son, Triston. He was killed by a so-called happy slapper. On a night out last year, Triston was punched so hard that he reeled backward, smashing his head on a concrete floor. He died a week later. Siobhan saw cell phone images of her son, blood oozing from his mouth and ear as he tried to speak.
"Did it make it worse for [me] as a mother?" Christmas asked. "Yes, much worse. It's the images. I'd have rather he, and this is going to sound completely sick in the head, if he'd been hit by a car, it would have been better."
As Triston lay writhing on the ground, his killer and the killer's gang went to a party and blithely sent the images of Triston to friends.
"The fact that he put it out to everybody to say, 'I'm really cool,'" Christmas said. "Look what I done to Triston Christmas. That's more hurtful."
Police investigating the murder seized cell phones from teenagers at the scene and found 14 other "happy slapping" incidents. The victims were found, and the perpetrators prosecuted.
"Unfortunately, it is all too common and I don't like the term 'happy slapping,'" said Detective Chief Inspector Ellie O'Connor. "I think it undermines what is essentially a serious assault for an unprovoked reason. In my view these are serious attacks. There doesn't appear to be any motive whatsoever, and it seems to be innocent members of the public that are being affected by it."
Why is this sweeping Britain? And why now? The advance of cell phone technology is a major factor, of course. Britain and Europe have embraced that technology.
Many think the craze was inspired by TV shows like "Jackass," which glorify public humiliation and pain. Happy slapping began on London's subway trains and quickly spread to the schoolyard. John Carr monitors new technology and how it can harm kids.
"Bullying is as old as the hills," said Carr, Internet consultant and associate director of London's National Children's Home. "It's been around. I was bullied at school when I was a kid in the '50s and early '60s. But with mobile phones, what you've got is a new tool."
And millions of teenagers have that new tool. Ninety-seven percent of British 12-to-16-year-olds have cell phones. Most of those cell phones have cameras built into them. And they're easy to use. What I have just filmed I will now send to a friend's e-mail address. Minutes later, he can replay the clip and e-mail it on to all of his friends.
"Being hit in public, which is what historically bullying has been about, is bad enough and humiliating enough," Carr said. "But in general it was limited to just the small number of people who would be standing around at the time it happened.
Now the humiliation is compounded. Millions might see you degraded.
"Without any question for some children, what's far, far worse is the way that their humiliation is being multiplied and advertised and broadcast to people they know and people they don't know," Carr said.
Happy slapping has driven kids to suicide. Now British police are trying to convince kids this isn't harmless fun. And pop singer Myleene Klass, herself a happy-slap victim, is touring schools pushing the message. Some teens seem to be listening.
"They're serious, arrestable offences, and we will do all to bring these people before the courts," said school officer Paul Peterson.
Four teenagers were jailed recently after they attacked eight people in an hour-long happy slapping spree late one night on the banks of the Thames. One victim, a 37-year-old barman, was killed. A 14-year-old girl who filmed the attacks and kicked the barman in the head was convicted of manslaughter.
"Maybe if we had known earlier how this technology was going to develop here in Britain we would have been out of the traps a bit quicker with public education and awareness programs," Carr said.

A U.N. anti-torture panel Friday called on the United States to close its prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to expressly ban controversial interrogation techniques, and to halt the transfer of detainees to countries with a history of abuse and torture.
The U.N. panel, charged with monitoring compliance with the 1984 Convention Against Torture, which the United States has ratified, also asserted that the CIA imprisonment of suspects in secret detention facilities without access to the International Committee of the Red Cross constituted a clear violation of the treaty.

So, because of this, we assume there must be torture going on at Gitmo? Or, we quoting this because it is ridiculous??

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House took both sides in a dispute over English being the national language Friday as a broad immigration bill moved toward a final Senate vote next week with one conservative predicting it will never become law.
Bush's support for the dueling sides doesn't stray from his long-held view on learning English, said White House press secretary Tony Snow.
"What the president has said all along is that he wants to make sure that people who become American citizens have a command of the English language," Snow said. "It's as simple as that."
The Senate on Thursday approved an amendment sponsored by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., that would declare English the national language. But it also approved an alternative proposal sponsored by Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., designating English the nation's "common and unifying language." Before the vote on the alternative, Inhofe warned his colleagues, "You can't have it both ways."
The White House seemed to. "We have supported both of these," Snow said of the two amendments.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, speaking Friday in Houston, added to the confusion.
"The president has never supported making English the national language," Gonzales said, adding, "I don't see the need to have legislation or a law that says English is going to be the national language."
As governor of Texas and a presidential candidate in 2000, Bush supported bilingual education programs. He sprinkles Spanish into his presidential speeches and has released political commercials in Spanish. But he also has said the national anthem should be sung in English.
The president plans to address immigration reform in his weekly radio address Saturday. He has generally favored a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and a guest worker program that would bring more foreigners to the U.S. to fill jobs. Both are central elements of the bill before the Senate.
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., an ardent opponent of the bill conceded Friday it is likely to pass next week. "The Senate should be ashamed of itself," he said. But he also predicted to reporters that it won't become law unless House and Senate negotiators rewrite it.
The adoption of Inhofe's amendment drew a heated protest Friday from Latinos.
John Trasvina, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said the amendment could be misinterpreted and lead to a cutback in services for those not proficient in English.
"Latinos don't need a law passed to say we ought to learn English. There are long waiting lists for adult English classes," Trasvina said. "It's false patriotism to pass an amendment to say you ought to learn English and not fulfill your responsibility of providing the opportunities." New Mexico Sen. Pete Domenici, the only Republican to reject the Inhofe proposal, said the country should "move beyond the notion that English, and English only, will ensure the future of the United States."

Sadly it is out of hand, terrible bullying, and kids think it is so funny. The cost of sending pictures is silly money, it should in my opion be raised to at least £5 per video, perhaps that would stop them, and the perpatraitors taken to a mortuary and be made to watch and perhaps justily they will be sick, then after that slung in prison for at least 10 years without any reason, or better still bring back Hanging to this country and anyobne who murders should be hung. I think happy slapping like other yob culture in the UK is down to our PM Tony Blair being to soft on crime. His human rights law has become a silly law that the yobs latch onto and if anyone stands up to them they get punished not the yobs.:wa:

Prisoners wielding improvised weapons have clashed with guards trying to stop a detainee from committing suicide at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The fight took place in a medium-security section of the camp as guards were responding to the fourth attempted suicide that day at the detention centre on the US Navy base, Navy Cmdr Robert Durand said.
Detainees used fans, light fixtures and other improvised weapons to attack the guards as they entered a communal living area to stop a prisoner who was trying to hang himself, Durand said.
Earlier in the day, three detainees in another part of the prison attempted suicide by swallowing prescription medicine they had been hoarding.
The attempted suicides and clash occurred on the same day the military transferred 15 Saudi detainees to their country, leaving about 460 prisoners at Guantanamo. It was unclear if the disturbances were related to the transfers.
The detainees who clashed with guards were moved to higher-security sections.
The medium-security Camp Four, where the clash occurred, houses detainees in dorm-style rooms that hold up to 10 people. Camp Four is for the most compliant prisoners and those who are slated for release.
Those who attempted suicide received medical treatment, the military said. Their names were not released, and military officials declined to speculate about possible motives.

TV Bounty Hunter Duane 'Dog' Chapman Weds
From Associated Press
May 21, 2006 6:31 AM EDT
HONOLULU - Duane "Dog" Chapman, star of A&E's reality show "Dog the Bounty Hunter," has married his longtime sidekick, Beth Smith.
The sunset ceremony on the Big Island took place Saturday, a day after the death of Chapman's daughter. Barbara Katy Chapman, 23, was killed in a car accident near her home of Fairbanks, Alaska.
Chapman gathered with his 10 surviving children - two of whom he had with Smith - and discussed whether to proceed with the wedding.
"They all decided unanimously they should celebrate the wedding and her life," said Michael Feeney, senior vice president of A&E television network.
The wedding will be featured in an Aug. 8 episode of the show, about Chapman and his tattooed crew of fugitive finders, which is now in its third season.
The self-proclaimed world's best bounty hunter and Smith have been together for 16 years.
"I've already been cuffed and shackled by Beth anyway," Chapman, 53, said before the ceremony. "She's Italian and tough."
Besides his trademark mullet, Chapman wore white jeans to match his white leather vest, boots and American Indian jewelry, representing his heritage. Boris Krutonog, the show's co-executive producer, was his best man.
Smith wore an off-white lace gown with nude backing designed by Eduardo Lucero.
Favors include dog tags with the inscription: "Dog & Beth. Captured. May 20, 2006."
The wedding and reception were held at the sprawling Hilton Waikoloa Village. The couple had planned to honeymoon in Fiji, but may postpone their plans because of the death of Chapman's daughter, Feeney said.
