Police find 2 bodies, 3 heads at car crash scene
Cops learn of earlier death after severed head hits road during accident
Updated: 9:23 a.m. CT June 16, 2006
BOISE, Idaho - A man transporting his wife’s severed head in a pickup truck crashed into an oncoming car, killing a woman and her 4-year-old daughter, police said. The impact sent the head flying onto the road.
A Boise police officer was driving behind Alofa Time’s truck on a busy road when he noticed the man’s erratic driving and then watched him slam into the car, police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower said.
Time, 51, who was not injured, told officers he was involved in his wife’s death, investigators said.
After searching Time’s house in Nampa, police found the decapitated body of 47-year-old Theresa N. Time in a car inside the garage, authorities said. She likely had been dead for several hours, Nampa Police Lt. LeRoy Forsman said.
An autopsy was scheduled next week to determine Theresa Time’s cause of death, Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris said.
Time was being held on two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Samantha Nina Murphy, 36, of Boise, and her daughter Jae Lynne Grimes. Murphy’s other daughter was injured and was in stable condition at a Boise hospital.
“It was one of the more horrific and complex crime scenes on memory,” Hightower said. “A woman and her child killed in a crash, and a severed head from an earlier homicide: It’s nothing short of bizarre and tragic.”

Robber Sues Victims After They Beat Him
AP
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (June 12) - A man is suing an auto-parts store for assault and battery after he attempted to hold up the business and employees responded by beating him with a metal pipe.
Dana Buckman, 46, walked into an auto shop brandishing a semiautomatic pistol last summer, only to have it turned on him by two AutoZone employees, police said. The men beat Buckman with a metal pipe and held him with his own gun.
Buckman escaped and was arrested a week later.
He pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and was sentenced to 18 years in prison as a repeat violent felon.
Buckman claims the men chased him out of the store and continued to beat him. He is suing the auto shop and the men for the injuries he suffered and for emotional distress.
"In some respects, you wonder if a case like this even needs a defense. It speaks for itself," said lawyer Patrick B. Naylon, who represents AutoZone and the employees.
But lawyer Phillip R. Hurwitz, who represents Buckman, said the employees crossed the line by pursuing Buckman and attacking him.
"The danger was past," Hurwitz said. "These two employees took it upon themselves to go after Mr. Buckman after he left the store."

LAKE MARY, Fla. A Florida man is charged with two counts of first-degree murder after allegedly killing his son on his eleventh birthday.
Law officials say the father repeatedly stabbed the boy with a samurai-style sword after chasing him into a neighbor's yard. When authorities went to the family's home, they found his wife's body.
A Seminole County sheriff's official describes it as "just an absolute gruesome scene."
The man is in stable condition at an Orlando hospital after surgery for injuries to his stomach.

Friday, June 23, 2006
The heat-induced Spare the Air Day that meant free transit rides in the Bay Area on Thursday drew significant numbers of new passengers to some systems, according to transit officials, who will offer another day of free rides today.
But it may not have lured enough drivers out of their cars to avoid exceeding federal smog standards.
Forecasters expect cooling at the coast and even around the bay today, but the torrid temperatures and mostly windless weather is expected to continue inland. That forecast persuaded air quality officials at noon Thursday to declare today the second Spare the Air Day for the year and the second day in a row.....

Actually, Annie -- there were two reasons. 1) Saddam's military was built to fight a WWII type war - with heavy armor, and confirmed emplacements, etc. The philosophy of fight until you can't win, fall back and regroup, didn't work. If you recall, he flew his entire Air Force to Iran (think about that for a minute!) and buried the fighters in the sand, expecting to bring them into play later. He was prepared for an entrenched war. 2) The tactics used by the coalition forces (shock and awe) did not allow sufficient time for the repositioning and reallocation of assets. Because of his deployment, Saddam couldn't get the assets to the battlefield in time to make a difference.
We often forget just how overwhelming that victory was over the third largest army in the world. They were steamrolled.

I don't know if you have a military backround but this is pretty right on. :55

Sheriff’s deputy mistakes pistol for Taser
Man reluctant to leave tree is shot, reportedly says, ‘Ow, that hurt’
Updated: 8:50 p.m. CT June 23, 2006
BREMERTON, Wash. - A sheriff's deputy who was trying to get a man down from a tree shot and wounded him after mistakenly pulling a gun instead of a Taser, authorities say.
The deputy, a five-year veteran of the force whose name was not released, was placed on leave while Thursday's shooting is investigated.
Deputies carry both a Taser and a gun on their utility belts. The Taser, or stun gun, is similar in shape to the compact .40-caliber gun the deputy carried, sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson said.
The victim was listed in satisfactory condition.
The man had climbed a fig tree and stayed there for hours, talking to himself. Deputies were unsure whether he was intoxicated or psychotic, and they wanted to get him down before he hurt himself or others, Wilson said.
Deputies and rescue workers tried to coax him down for almost two hours, during which he became increasingly hostile, said David Blakeslee, an employee at an auto repair shop nearby.
Blakeslee said the man climbed down on his own after getting shot.
"He said, `Ow, that hurt. I'm coming down, I'm coming down,'" Blakeslee said.

Faulty Implant Gave Man 10-Year Erection
By RAY HENRY
AP
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 23) - A former handyman has won more than $400,000 in a lawsuit over a penile implant that gave him a 10-year erection.
Charles "Chick" Lennon, 68, received the steel and plastic implant in 1996, about two years before Viagra went on the market. The Dura-II is designed to allow impotent men to position the penis upward for sex, then lower it.
But Lennon could not position his penis downward. He said he could no longer hug people, ride a bike, swim or wear bathing trunks because of the pain and embarrassment. He has become a recluse and is uncomfortable being around his grandchildren, his lawyer said.
In 2004, a jury awarded him $750,000. A judge called that excessive and reduced it to $400,000. On Friday, the Rhode Island Supreme Court affirmed that award in a ruling that turned on a procedural matter.
"I don't know any man who for any amount of money would want to trade and take my client's life," said Jules D'Alessandro, Lennon's attorney. "He's not a whole person."
A lawyer representing both Dura-II manufacturer Dacomed Corp. and the company's insurer declined to comment. Dacomed maintained that nothing was wrong with the implant.
The implant consists of a series of plastic plates strung together with steel surgical wire, almost like a roll of wrapped coins. Springs press against the plates, creating enough surface tension to simulate an erection, D'Alessandro said.
Lennon cannot get the implant removed because of health problems, including open-heart surgery, his lawyer said. Impotence drugs could not help Lennon even if he were able to have the device taken out, because tissue had be to removed for it to be implanted.
Dacomed was later acquired by a California company whose sales dropped when Viagra was introduced on the market. The company filed for bankruptcy the following year.

Fight Causes JetBlue Flight to Be Diverted
From Associated Press
June 25, 2006 6:31 AM EDT
NEW YORK - Police detained one woman and questioned two others early Sunday after a fight broke out in the first minutes of a flight to Puerto Rico, causing the plane to be diverted to John F. Kennedy Airport, officials said.
One woman apparently started a fistfight with the other two, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the region's airports. Port Authority police were to turn the women over to FBI officials, who would decide whether charges would be filed, Coleman said.
JetBlue Flight 561 took off from Newark, N.J., at 12:01 a.m. Sunday and landed at JFK about an hour later, said airline spokeswoman Jenny Dervin. The plane, carrying the remaining 147 passengers and six crew members, resumed its trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, at 1:50 a.m., she said.
The identities of those in custody were not immediately available.
Messages left at local FBI offices early Sunday were not immediately returned.

I watched an old documentry for the second time last week and it was about airline safety and the laws that were brought in after 9/11. The presenter asked what I thought was a very valid question. Why is it we can carry 2 lighters and 3 packets of matches on a plane but a women who was carrying breast milk was forced to drink 2 ounces of it to prove it wasn't dangerous. He then said if the shoe bomber was carrying a lighter and not matches he more than likely would have blown up the plane.. The question left remaining is did the cigerette companies put their 2 cents worth in when the government was trying to make new aeroplane laws to protect us all. everyone knows the first thing a smoker wants to do when he gets off a plane is light up. Did this come into play.........:sc Fight Causes JetBlue Flight to Be Diverted

For so many years, historians and casual observers alike have observed the events of World War II through faded black and white images. What most people do not know is the fact that quite a large portion of the WWII was shot using color film! However, it wasn't until recently that a lot of the photographs and motion picture footage was de-classified by the U.S. Government. We don't just have a collection of U.S. images, but we also have a diverse collection of German, Russian, Japanese, British and Italian photos..

A new book co-written by a former New York cabbie aims to turn accepted traffic teaching on its head. Called the Bad Driver’s Handbook, it does away with the pretence of caring and considerate driving and reveals the rules of the road we all know to be true: cursing, cutting up and being generally pushy and unhelpful.

Operation removes lightbulb from anus
Thu Jun 29, 7:34 AM ET
MULTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - Fateh Mohammad, a prison inmate in Pakistan, says he woke up last weekend with a glass lightbulb in his anus.
Wednesday night, doctors brought Mohammad's misery to an end after a one-and-a-half hour operation to remove the object.
"Thanks Allah, now I feel comfort. Today, I had my breakfast. I was just drinking water, nothing else," Mohammad, a grey-beared man in his mid-40s, told Reuters from a hospital bed in the southern central city of Multan.
"We had to take it out intact," said Dr. Farrukh Aftab at Nishtar Hospital. "Had it been broken inside, it would be a very very complicated situation."
Mohammad, who is serving a four-year sentence for making liquor, prohibited for Muslims, said he was shocked when he was first told the cause of his discomfort. He swears he didn't know the bulb was there.
"When I woke up I felt a pain in my lower abdomen, but later in hospital, they told me this," Mohammad said.
"I don't know who did this to me. Police or other prisoners."
The doctor treating Mohammad said he'd never encountered anything like it before, and doubted the felon's story that someone had drugged him and inserted the bulb while he was comatose.
Ok now I know a lot of people who have really good ideas and it is said it's light a light goin on over their head... I know a lot of people who have their heads up their asses. This is a first... someone who has a good idea while his head is up his ass?

Chewing tobacco in noodles sickens 30
June 27, 2006 (PHNOM PENH, Cambodia) - Thirty Cambodians suffered food poisoning after eating homemade noodles contaminated with chewing tobacco that had dropped into the batter from the cook's mouth, police said Monday.
The victims, mostly children, began vomiting after eating noodle soup for breakfast Friday in a village in Banteay Meanchey province, about 190 miles northwest of the capital, Phnom Penh, said Deputy District Police Chief Yort Ray. An investigation turned up traces of chewing tobacco in the noodles and led police to 39-year-old wholesale noodle vendor Sieng Seng, who had supplied the shops where people got sick.
Sieng Sang, an avid tobacco chewer like many poor Cambodian women, said she had not realized a wad had dropped into the flour as she was talking. Police gave her a lesson in hygiene and told her to be more careful when opening her mouth while cooking, Yort Ray said.

The United States of total paranoia
Jeremy Clarkson
I know Britain is full of incompetent water board officials and stabbed Glaswegians but even so I fell on my knees this morning and kissed the ground, because I’ve just spent three weeks trying to work in America.
It’s known as the land of the free and I’m sure it is if you get up in the morning, go to work in a petrol station, eat nothing but double-egg burgers — with cheese — and take your children to little league. But if you step outside the loop, if you try to do something a bit zany, you will find that you’re in a police state.
We begin at Los Angeles airport in front of an immigration official who, like all his colleagues, was selected for having no grace, no manners, no humour, no humanity and the sort of IQ normally found in farmyard animals. He scanned my form and noted there was no street number for the hotel at which I was staying.
“I’m going to need a number,” he said. “Ooh, I’m sorry,” I said, “I’m afraid I don’t have one.”
This didn’t seem to have any effect. “I’m going to need a number,” he said again, and then again, and then again. Each time I shrugged and stammered, terrified that I might be sent to the back of the queue or worse, into the little room with the men in Marigolds. But I simply didn’t have an answer.
“I’m going to need a number,” he said again, giving the distinct impression that he was an autobank, and that this was a conversation he was prepared to endure until one of us died. So with a great deal of bravery I decided to give him one. And the number I chose was 2,649,347.
This, it turned out, was fine. He’d been told by his superiors to get a number. I’d given him a number. His job was done and so, just an hour or so later, I was on the streets of Los Angeles doing a piece to camera.
Except, of course, I wasn’t. Technically you need a permit to film on every street in pretty well every corner of the world. But the only countries where this rule is enforced are Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea and the United States of America.
So, seconds after breaking out the tripod, a policeman pulled up and demanded that we show him our permit. We had one that covered the city of Los Angeles . . . except the bit where we were. So we were moved on.
The next day I was moved on in Las Vegas too because the permit I had didn’t cover the part of the pavement I was standing on. Eight inches away was fine.
You need a permit to do everything in America. You even need a passport to buy a drink. But interestingly you don’t need one if you wish to rent some guns and some bullets. I needed a 50 cal (very big) machinegun. “No problem,” said the man at the shop. “But could you just sign this assuring us that the movie you’re making is not anti-Bush or anti-war.”
Also, you do not need a permit if you want — as I did — to transport a dead cow on the roof of your car through the Florida panhandle. That’s because this is banned by a state law.
Think about that. Someone has gone to all the bother and expense of drawing up a law that means that at some point lots of people were moving dead cows about on their cars. It must have been popular. Fashionable even.
Anyway, back to the guns. I needed them because I wished to shoot a car in the Mojave desert. But you can’t do that without the say-so of the local fire chief who turned up, with his haircut, to say that for reasons he couldn’t explain, he had a red flag in his head.
You find this a lot in America. People way down the food chain are given the power to say yes or no to elaborately prepared plans, just so their bosses can’t be sued. One expression that simply doesn’t translate from English in these days of power without responsibility is “Ooh, I’m sure it’ll be fine”.
And, unfortunately, these people at the bottom of the food chain have no intellect at all. Reasoning with them is like reasoning with a tree. I think this is because people in the sticks have stopped marrying their cousins and are now mating with vegetables.
They certainly aren’t eating them. You see them growing in fields, but all you ever find on a menu is cheese, cheese, cheese, or cheese with cheese. Except for a steak and cheese sandwich I bought in Mississippi. This was made, according to the label, from “imitation cheese”.
Nope, I don’t know what that is either but I do know that out of the main population centres, the potato people are getting fatter and dimmer by the minute.
Today the average petrol pump attendant is capable, just, of turning on a pump when you prepay. But if you pay for two pumps to be turned on to fill two cars, you can, if you stare carefully, see wisps of smoke coming from her fat, useless, acne-scarred, gormless turnip face.
And the awful thing is that you don’t want the petrol anyway, because it’ll simply get you to somewhere else, which will be worse. A point I shall prove next week when we have a look at what happened in Alabama. And why the poor of New Orleans will sue if the donation you make isn’t as big as they’d hoped for.

Britons tire of cruel, vulgar US: poll
Sun Jul 2, 11:12 PM ET
LONDON (AFP) - People in Britain view the United States as a vulgar, crime-ridden society obsessed with money and led by an incompetent president whose
Iraq policy is failing, according to a newspaper poll.
The United States is no longer a symbol of hope to Britain and the British no longer have confidence in their transatlantic cousins to lead global affairs, according to the poll published in The Daily Telegraph.
The YouGov poll found that 77 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement that the US is "a beacon of hope for the world".
As Americans prepared to celebrate the 230th anniversary of their independence on Tuesday, the poll found that only 12 percent of Britons trust them to act wisely on the global stage. This is half the number who had faith in the Vietnam-scarred White House of 1975.
A massive 83 percent of those questioned said that the United States doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks.
With much of the worst criticism aimed at the US administration, the poll showed that 70 percent of Britons like Americans a lot or a little.
US President George W. Bush fared significantly worse, with just one percent rating him a "great leader" against 77 percent who deemed him a "pretty poor" or "terrible" leader.
More than two-thirds who offered an opinion said America is essentially an imperial power seeking world domination. And 81 per cent of those who took a view said President George W Bush hypocritically championed democracy as a cover for the pursuit of American self-interests.
US policy in Iraq was similarly derided, with only 24 percent saying they felt that the US military action there was helping to bring democracy to the country.
A spokesman for the American embassy said that the poll's findings were contradicted by its own surveys.
"We question the judgment of anyone who asserts the world would be a better place with Saddam still terrorizing his own nation and threatening people well beyond Iraq's borders," the paper quoted the unnamed spokesman as saying.
"With respect to the poll's assertions about American society, we bear some of the blame for not successfully communicating America's extraordinary dynamism.
"But frankly, so do you (the British press)."
In answer to other questions, a majority of the Britons questions described Americans as uncaring, divided by class, awash in violent crime, vulgar, preoccupied with money, ignorant of the outside world, racially divided, uncultured and in the most overwhelming result (90 percent of respondents) dominated by big business.

Witnesses told police that Matthew John Payne, 30, hit “a couple of (parked) cars and some mailboxes” before ramming into an oncoming car, leaving his front fender and license plate on the street.
Witnesses said Payne then drove around cars stopped at a four-way stop, ran the stop sign and rear-ended another car. Payne reportedly got out of his car, checked the damage and then returned to his car and drove it home, hitting two more mailboxes on the way.
Witnesses said Payne hit his dog in his driveway before crashing into his house.
Payne told the responding officers that he had not been drinking. Payne submitted to several sobriety tests, which police said he failed, and was charged with operating while intoxicated and four counts of hit-and-run.
Payne was laughing when police found him. He told them he had recently changed his brakes.

Indonesia has warned that more human bird flu deaths are inevitable after a five-year-old boy died of the virus, raising the sprawling country's death toll to 41, the health minister said.
"We will continue to have bird flu patients because we have infected chickens in 27 provinces,'' Siti Fadilah Supari told reporters.
"It is only logical that there will be new cases.''
The latest victim died June 16 in Tulungagung, a town in East Java, she said, citing World Health Organisation-sanctioned test results.
She said the boy was suspected of catching the virus from chickens that died close to his home. Other family members have been tested for the virus, she said, but gave no more details.
Supari said Indonesia's current death toll stands at 41. The WHO lists 39 deaths, though the UN agency often takes a few days to update its database.
Indonesia has been criticised for not routinely culling fowl in infected areas, something experts agree is the best way to stop it spreading. The government says it does not have enough money to compensate farmers.
Vietnam's death toll is the world's highest at 42, but it has not recorded any cases this year amid an aggressive culling policy.
Bird flu has killed at least 130 people worldwide since it started ravaging Asian poultry farms in late 2003, according to the WHO figures.
Most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds, but experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that makes it more easily transmissible among humans.

Dog, unhappy about rough car chase, bites off part of suspect-owner’s nose
CEDAR CITY, Utah - A police pursuit ended when the suspect's dog, not happy about being bounced around in the car, bit its owner on the face.
Iron County sheriff's officers approached Nicholas T. Galanis, 47, of Salt Lake City to talk to him about some stolen property.
Galanis got in his car and fled with his dog.
The chase went southbound on Gold Springs Road, a windy, bumpy dirt road about five miles northwest of Modena, at around 5:38 p.m. Monday, said sheriff's detective Jody Edwards.
"Deputies could see the dog in the passenger seat getting slammed into the window," he said.
The dog, which is partly pit bull, "became so agitated that he bit his owner in the face," Edwards said. "And this is what ended the chase."
The bite removed part of Galanis' nose, and he stopped.
Galanis was taken to Valley View Medical Center before being booked into Iron County Jail.
His dog was taken to the Enoch Animal Shelter.
Galanis was held for investigation of supplying false information to police, receiving/possession of stolen property and theft.

Near as I can figure, that means that Iraqis are about 12 years ahead of our pace.

Some people are slower and others faster...but then there are reasons.
The objectives aren't the same.
For the USA, it took quite a bit of time to clear the forests and to civilise the land. A wild, wild west (not to paraphrase James West) takes time to build.
Iraq was just copy democracy in America but it has gone one step further and I must admit that if Iraq continues the way it's going, one will need to colonize it soon.

For the USA, it took quite a bit of time to clear the forests and to civilise the land. A wild, wild west (not to paraphrase James West) takes time to build. I''m not sure that economic expansion had much to do with the revolutionary timeline. Six years to fight a war (1775-1781) is about the standard, and the ensuing political wrangling that led up to the Constitutional convention wasn't an issue of clearing land, but rather a time of coalescence of ideals and goals (for example, during this time, issues of slavery, taxing, land ownership, and voting rights were debated and resolved). It just took that long to make all 13 colonies understand and agree on the vision. As you know, in any group decision, everybody needs to be heard, and everybody wants their fingerprints on it. Even then, the Constitution was signed in 1787 and it took an additional 3 years to get it ratified by each colony.
Iraq was just copy democracy in America but it has gone one step further and I must admit that if Iraq continues the way it's going, one will need to colonize it soon. One step further? I admit to not closely following their constitutional convention -- what is the one step further? I also admit that my definition of success is short-sighted -- make the Iraqis self-governing and self-protecting, so we can get the hell out of there. What is the "way it is going now" that concerns you?
I think I prefer a cabin on the the lakes of Colorado than a dacha on the Tigris River. So do I, my friend. In fact, if you like, you can borrow mine for a weekend or a week.

The world has erupted in outrage after a series of brazen North Korean missile tests, with nations denouncing the launches as provocative, threatening sanctions and vowing to seek UN Security Council action.
Leading the chorus was the United States, which said the military exercise - including the abortive launch of a long-range Taepodong-2 believed capable of reaching American shores - was meant to "intimidate'' other countries.
Japan, sitting in the missiles' strike zone, put its military on high alert, while Australia warned of more possible launches.
Russia said the seven missile shots only undermined international trust in the impoverished, nuclear-armed communist nation.

I thought it was interesting how the long range missile, that could reach the US, "failed" in midflight 40 seconds after launch - a time when an ICBM is virtually in cruise control, and by the way, has cleared all populated areas. Makes ya wonder if Reagan's Star Wars vision was so far off base. Wouldn't an anti-missile defense be a great thing?

A bear cub drew a crowd of spectators at a Lake Tahoe neighbourhood in Nevada as it munched on a barbecue-chicken and jalapeno pizza in the back seat of a vintage red Buick convertible.
It also apparently washed it down with a swig of a Jack Daniel's mixer, some vodka, and a beer taken from a cooler, the vehicle's owner said.
About 30 people watched the cub lumber around a car park before it homed in on the car and the spicy pizza on the floor.
The bear was unfazed by the car's horn, which blew non-stop as the cub pressed the seat into the steering wheel.
"The bear was loping along in the parking lot and then decided to get inside the car,'' said resident Jerry Patterson.
The owner of the car, David Ziello of South Lake Tahoe, said the bear didn't cause any damage, but slopped cheese and jalapenos on the seats and floor.
Carl Lackey, a biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, said up to two dozen bears lived in the Kingsbury region near the south shore of Lake Tahoe.
They went for food from rubbish bins and people who left it in the open, said Lackey, who tracks and relocates bears on the Nevada side of the Tahoe basin.

John Prescott faces mounting challenges over his links to a US billionaire's casino plans after refusing to quit.
Aides have insisted it would be "business as usual'', despite hints from one close friend that Mr Prescott might decide he has had enough.
But his bid to end attacks on his integrity by entering his stay on Philip Anschutz's ranch on the register of MPs' interests appears to have failed.
Parliamentary sleaze watchdog Sir Philip Mawer has launched an investigation into the claims, and critics say that Mr Prescott's defence raises more questions than it answers.
Official documents obtained by The Guardian under freedom of information laws are said to show that Mr Prescott's department was directly involved in the casino plans.

Discover the golden rules for becoming a sensual kisser. It's time to pucker up and smooch...
You are what you eat
Garlic, spice and onion are off the kissing menu. Steer clear of coffee, and brush your teeth or chew gum to freshen your breath, especially if you're a smoker.
Don't: Sniff your breath in full view, boys. Girls, go easy on the lip balm. You want him to come back for more - not glue him to your lips with a sticky man-trap.
Wait for it
The greater part of seduction is anticipation. Stand or lie face to face and simply let your lips touch, feeling the heat of each other's breath. The sensation of being ever so close while gazing into your partner's eyes can be electrifying.
Don't: Lick your predatory lips and go straight in for the kill.:lmao :lmao

River sweeps 5 children to their deaths
Victims were on church outing
BALLWIN, Missouri (AP) -- Five youngsters drowned during a church outing after one became caught in a river's undertow and the others jumped in to help, authorities said Monday. A sixth child was rescued and hospitalized.
The six were part of a group of about 50 youngsters with the St. Louis Dream Center, an interdenominational church that was celebrating a volunteer appreciation day with a barbecue and swimming at Castlewood State Park southwest of St. Louis.
Witnesses said the children -- ages 9 to 15 -- were swept away after they stopped to play in the Meramec River Sunday evening, said Tracy Panus, a spokeswoman for St. Louis County police.
"Let me say this is one of the most horrendous things a church family, any family, would have to go through," said church pastor Jeff Allensworth. "I just ask that as we sort through this and minister to the families, you all pray for us."
He said they were still trying to determine exactly what happened.
Authorities received the first call around 6:30 p.m. Sunday and worked through the night to find the victims -- four boys and one girl whose ages ranged from 9 to 15.
Metro West Fire Department Chief Vincent Loyal said when rescue workers arrived, two children had already been pulled from the river, and one later died. The second youth, a boy, remained hospitalized, Loyal said.
The body of the last victim was pulled from the river about 6 a.m. Monday.
St. Louis County Police Lt. Gary Barra said the bodies were found in water eight to 12 feet deep, though parts of the river are shallow enough to walk in.
The bodies were about 200 yards downstream from a sandy beach where the group likely entered the water, Loyal said. Athletic shoes, water bottles and a breathing mask with instructions were seen on the beach. The water at the beach area was calm Monday morning, though a swift current ran further down the waterway.
Rescue workers were hampered by inconsistent reports about how many children were attending the event and how many were missing, Panus said.
"It was just depressing," Panus said. "It was horrible. You have a church group out there for a good reason, a good cause. No one is out there drinking or getting stoned, and a tragedy can happen just like that. It's kids and it's tragic."
Parents said the children could swim, Panus said. Family members were identifying the victims Monday morning.
According to its Web site, the Dream Center in north St. Louis is an interdenominational church that offers a variety of social services from a teen drop-in center to programs for the homeless.

Boy loses both legs below knee in water-park mishap
33 minutes ago
A seven-year-old boy seriously injured in a swimming pool accident at a Quebec water park has lost both legs below the knee.
One of the boy's legs was severed Monday when he got caught in an intake pipe at the bottom of the pool. The other leg was amputated in hospital.
The boy, identified only as Alexis, had been swimming at Les Glissades water park in Saint-Pie, about 50 kilometres east of Montreal
"He was sucked up in the tube," said witness Frederik Chrétien, an employee at the park.
"When he got out, he was missing a foot, and the other was attached by just a little skin," said Chrétien. Les Glissades co-owner Denis Arcand said a lifeguard had warned swimmers they were getting too close to the intake pipe, which is about 30 centimetres in diameter, just before the boy was trapped.
When he saw that the boy was caught, the lifeguard turned off the pump that draws water into the pipe.
The child's heart had stopped when he was pulled from the water by a lifeguard and another patron, but his vital signs returned when he was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
He was rushed to Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal, where he is listed in critical condition.
Quebec provincial police spokesman Claude Denis said an investigation is underway to determine whether protective screens were in place on the pipe and, if not, at what point they came off.

That was hard to read... my God! Mishap is putting it mildly!
Produced by the U.K.-based New Economics Foundation (NEF) and the global environmental group Friends of the Earth, the "Happy Planet Index" was released on Wednesday.
"The index doesn’t reveal the 'happiest' country in the world," said the report.
It essentially divides the environmental damage countries cause by the life expectancy and life satisfaction of its citizens.
Vanuatu scored well in the area of overall life satisfaction, but was below average in life expectancy.
It leaves a tiny ecological footprint, however, scoring below what the index sets out as a "reasonable ideal."
With a population of roughly 200,000, the majority of people on Vanuatu live in a subsistence economy.
While Vanuatu, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica and Panama topped the list, none of the world's leading industrialized nations cracked the top 50.
Canada ranks 111th
Canada ranked 111th in the 178-nation survey, which placed Germany at 88, Japan at 95, France at 129, the United States at 150 and Russia at 172.
Burundi, Swaziland and Zimbabwe filled the final three spots on the list.
"The nations that score well show that achieving long, happy lives without over-stretching the planet’s resources is possible," said the index.
Canadians came close to the index's "reasonable ideal" when it came to measuring life satisfaction and life expectancy, but Canada left a heavy ecological footprint, according to the study.
The study uses the following indicators:
- Ecological footprint - whether the environment can meet the demands of the country and other countries it supplies. For example, a banana plantation in Costa Rica won't necessarily be included as part of that country's ecological footprint, but will be part of the footprint of the country that consumes the bananas.
- Life satisfaction - self-reported estimates of how satisfied people are with their lives overall.
- Life expectancy - life expectancy rates of each country

Boy Beaten, Artificial Leg Used As Weapon
Teens Accused Of Attacking One Boy, Hitting Friend With Prosthetic
(CBS) BURBANK, Ill. A 15-year-old southwest suburban boy and his friends are wondering what could have made a group of teens beat him, then take his prosthetic leg and use it as a weapon on a friend who came to his rescue.
As CBS 2’s Kristyn Hartman reports, D.J. Choate of Burbank is now without his leg after losing it in a scuffle his friends call unthinkable.
Choate and some friends were outside near 79th Street and Nagle Avenue when a group of teens drove past and almost hit him on Monday morning just after midnight.
Choate said he and his friends believed the teens were drunk, and they called the teens on their behavior. The teens exited the car, and when they did so, Choate asked to be left alone because he only had one leg.
But one of the teens shoved Choate to the ground and removed his leg. Police said when a 20-year-old friend tried to help Choate, one of the attackers used the leg as a weapon to hit him in the head.
The teens then smashed the artificial leg on the ground and drove off, police said.
“There was no reason for anyone to jump on us,” Choate said. “We did nothing. Nothing wrong.”
Choate added there was “no reason, not one reason” for the assailants to take his leg. “That’s demented right there,” he said.
Added Choate’s friend Victoria Campbell, “I really don’t know what to say about it. He didn’t do nothing wrong. He was just in there trying to help his friend out.”
The prosthetic leg was severely damaged. Choate needs a new prosthetic leg and without a replacement, he cannot walk normally.
Police say they are looking for five men who speak Polish or broken English.

Here we bloody well go again...3rd world war.[U]
North Korea has staunchly rejected a UN Security Council resolution sanctioning the communist nation for recent missile tests and warned the measure was a prelude to a renewed Korean War.
The North also said it would "bolster its war deterrent for self-defence," without elaborating, a typical phrase often used to refer to the country's nuclear weapons programme.
But the US warned of more action against the North if it continued to abstain from international talks on its nuclear programme, which it has boycotted for more than eight months.
Amid the impasse on the nuclear talks, North Korea drew further international condemnation earlier this month after launching a long-range missile believed capable of reaching the US, in violation of a self-imposed moratorium.

Bush, Blair laugh off mike mishap
Tuesday, July 18, 2006 Posted: 0910 GMT (1710 HKT)
British newspapers saw Blair as having more reason than Bush for embarrasment.
(CNN) -- U.S. President George W. Bush and British PM Tony Blair have laughed off the moment when their unguarded comments were broadcast to the world on a live microphone at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg.
Asked about the microphone mishap during his final briefing of the summit, Blair quipped that it was "all about transparent government" -- smiling and tapping the microphone in front of him.
Bush "sort of rolled his eyes and laughed" when told the comments had been audible and a copy had been made, said Press Secretary Tony Snow, according to The Associated Press.
"Actually his reaction first was, 'What did it say?' So we showed him the transcript, then he rolled his eyes and laughed."
The open microphone caught Bush unaware in an unguarded moment Monday as the escalating crisis in the Middle East prompted him to use an expletive in a conversation with Blair.
Bush and Blair were aware that an event at the Group of Eight summit was a photo opportunity, with media representatives present. Blair later turned off the microphone.
The president was expressing frustration at the United Nations' stance on the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon.
Apparently not expecting an open mic to pick up his remarks, Bush told Blair: "See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over."
Earlier Monday, Blair and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for the deployment of an international force in southern Lebanon to help end the spiraling conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Islamic militant group that holds seats in the Lebanese government.
British newspapers too showed mostly amusement Tuesday at the unscripted comments -- particularly the U.S. president's greeting: "Yo, Blair!"
Bush had sounded "more like a rapper than a statesman" said Britain's most popular tabloid, The Sun.
Most UK papers agreed that Blair had fared the worse over the microphone mishap. The remarks provided a unique insight into the relationship between the two men, said The Independent.
It had "done little to rebuff suspicions that the prime minister is something of a Washington poodle." said the Opposition Conservative-supporting Daily Mail.
Kevin McGuire in the Daily Mirror said that Britain's "eager" MP had been shown up seeing himself "as a diplomat in the service of the U.S. government, offering to go to the Middle East on behalf of the U.S. government."
Some of the text of the Bush-Blair conversation was as follows:
Bush: What about Kofi Annan? I don't like the sequence of it. His attitude is basically cease-fire and everything else happens.
Blair: I think the thing that is really difficult is you cant stop this unless you get this international presence agreed.
Bush: She's going. I think Condi's going to go pretty soon.
Blair: Well that's all that matters. If you see, it will take some time to get out of there. But at least it gives people ...
Bush: It's a process I agree. I told her your offer too.
Blair: Well it's only or if she's gonna or if she needs the ground prepared as it were. See, if she goes out she's got to succeed as it were, where as I can just go out and talk.
Bush: See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over.
Blair: Cause I think this is all part of the same thing. What does he think? He thinks if Lebanon turns out fine, if he gets a solution in Israel and Palestine, Iraq goes in the right way, he's done it. That's what this whole things about. It's the same with Iran.
Bush: I feel like telling Kofi to get on the phone with Assad and make something happen. We're not blaming Israel and we're not blaming the Lebanese government.

You are, once again, absolutely correct. Our society is not prepared to deal with a leader who says exactly what he thinks. Social and political elements are busy trying to find a niche in which they can survive. A leader who says what he thinks - and leads by what he believes - is an anathema to all those who wish to sit by the roadside and merely carp about the state of the world, rather than getting off their ass and doing something about it. Each group, in its attempt to maintain its political relevancy, wants to be able to influence the utimate result, to have its fingerprints on the final answer, so that it may claim responsibility for sucess and ignore involvement for defeats.
Ahmadinejad, in Iran, is but a pawn in a larger game run by people of more power. He is the yapping dog that distracts you from the bear behind you. But, make no mistake, he clearly represents the ruling opinion - though not the populist opinion. The one thing you can say about the radical muslim element - they are truthful. They tell you exactly what their goals are, and then move on those goals. The problem is -- we choose not to listen, because if we believed him then we would have to do something about him.

Of course not -- I guess it comes down to definition. Like you, I collect inputs from others -- I listen to them. But, I don't consider that political correctness -- that's just good management. You never know who is going to have the right answer, or just as importantly, is going to say something that helps you to define the right approach. Political correctness is when I change the answer in order to ostensibly avoid offending one party or another - and that don't happen. How it is delivered is a concession to political correctness, probably - you may change the wording in order to avoid perceived offenses, but in the bottom line, the answer doesn't change.

No...not a sales rep...but my position does require me to pull off a great deal of "sales". And I swear...I get off the phone sometimes and really give some of these people a piece of my mind, but on the phone, I am their best friend. :)
That returns to your notion of being a negotiator.
Try working with unions and / or syndicates.
One is not always pleased with what he hears, talk one hears behind the backs from the opposing team or even one's own teams. The trick is to negotiate without giving up one's very own personal viewpoints. Sometimes very difficult-

So in full circle, how different is what you and I do to what our politicians and political parties must do to survive? Believe me, it drives me crazy, but when I look at it from a business perspective, you have to agree most of it makes sense.

Absolutely -- which brings us back to my point that a politician or leader who told the unvarnished truth would not survive.

Well shit!! I didn't feel like agreeing! Take the other side, so we can continue! ;)

Oh yeah - sorry!!! I'll do like is popular today -- if you don't have a valid position, attack the opposition!!!
That is such bullshit -- you're being narrow minded!! No one cares what you think!!
How did that work?

Tot's arm broken; dad charged
• Aggravated battery: 4-month-old had leg broken three months ago
By Dan MoranSTAFF WRITER
WAUKEGAN — A Waukegan man is in Lake County Jail charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a child after allegedly breaking his 4-month-old daughter's arm last weekend, three months after he allegedly broke her leg in an incident that was under investigation by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
Waukegan Police Cmdr. Mark McCormick said 19-year-old Fransisco Vasquez Jr. confessed to inflicting both injuries after being taken into custody Saturday, and he also confessed to inflicting an unreported rib injury that was discovered by physicians examining the child's broken arm.
According to McCormick, the sequence of events began April 15, when the baby was treated at Lake Forest Hospital for a right spiral leg fracture, which McCormick described as "an injury caused by twisting and jerking the bone. It's not the kind of injury that can occur by falling down."
After being alerted by hospital officials, Waukegan police conducted an investigation but "did not get a lot of cooperation from the family," McCormick said. "We were not able to determine who was responsible (for the injury), so we contacted DCFS and they were monitoring the situation."
On Saturday, the child was taken to Vista Medical Center East, the former Victory Memorial Hospital, with a spiral fracture of the left arm. "At that time, we got a little better cooperation from the family," said McCormick, adding that information led to the father being brought in for questioning.
All of the injuries are believed to have been inflicted in the family's residence on the 1000 block of Lakehurst Road. The baby was transported to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee for evaluation of her injuries, which are not considered life-threatening, McCormick said. While no charges have been filed against any other members of the family, McCormick added that the investigation into the situation is ongoing.

annie if i didn't know any better, i would swear that was a friend of mines granddaughter, they just found out their son-in-law did the exact same thing to her. and shes so pretty. he toook off, on the run, i told mark if i catch him, he won't be going to jail. shes 4 months old, he broke her ribs and her leg and her arm. nobody could figure out why the baby kept crying. my friend took her to the doctor down here, asnd they found it. needless to say, her daughter lost both kids. their trying to get custody of both of them now.

I don't understand it and I don't think I ever will. My son had colic so bad he would scream for hours every single night. I think this is the point where some parents lose it and I used to cry my eyes too. Finally, I learned that if I layed him down in his crib and walked out on to patio I could catch my breath and eventually he would stop. But to take something like that out on a poor little baby? Thank God my son outgrew it after about 4 or 5 months of age! This stuff breaks my heart...
