View Full Version : Case of mistaken identity

It has come to my attention, twice now, that my name here is a little misleading. How do I know this? Well, two guys have tried to hit on me, one asking me if I played. I realize that the first name may cause one to wonder as to my gender, but when you combine it with the second name, there is a rather obvious reference to the antagonist in Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities that suggests what my true gender is. This misunderstanding underscores the application of the law of unintended consequences to not paying attention in school, a rather unfortunate application at that.
Mind you, I'm flattered. Truly I am. It's nice to be wanted. But at my size, I wouldn't even make a decent trannie.
So for future reference, be it known to all present that I am indeed a man who does not swing both ways (that was suggested, too, although at that time it was still thought, hopefully, that I was a woman). Not that there's anything wrong with it. I just stay on my side of the fence, which is where most women prefer me to stay anyway.

Hmm, I saw the name and instantly thought you were a man, but coming from the U.K, I don't think Sydney is a common female name. Alas I didn't connect your full name with the Dickens novel, and I did pay attention at school, I guess we read different classics!!
You can ask to have a gender indicator against your name to avoid further offers though!!! :ok

Welcome Sydney…
Well, I got the reference…interesting why you picked him! Similarities? Are you going to quote him as your sig? Isn't this a far, far better thing that you have done?
At least you’re getting noticed! Perhaps the people who made the mistake were new and couldn’t look at your profile to see your gender….or maybe they were just so overwhelmed to meet you that they didn’t bother! Does “Sydney” mean female to some, as “Sidney” means male?
Maybe now you can see why 150 posts are required for some of the features here. Wait around for longer and it might become more apparent. Jumpy people can assume too much. Imagine what else gets assumed. No, not everyone’s thinking with their brains!

I hadn't given much thought to signatures, actually.

Well Sydney, welcome to the world of women in the chatroom... we get "assaulted" quite regularly in there and some men as well when their names are not so clear.
It was clear to me that you were a man, but i've "met" you in the forum, in the chatroom, its not as obvious sometimes.
As for your reference, I payed a whole lot of attention in the classroom and I must say, my classics are more of the Victor Hugo or Simone de Beauvoir... don't assume everyone here has the same background as you do ;)

As I said, I took no offense. I thought it was funny. I do recognize that women are assaulted, to use your term, and try not to do that myself. But I thought that at a bare minimum, when in doubt one would ask. So I just posted this to avoid any confusion in the future.

To be honest, I thought the same as Cotties. Great minds think alike? Probably not.
But ....... It was the best of times, it was the worst of times and that is pretty much what you will find here. There will still be guys pming you thinking you or hoping you are female. I see it constantly and it happens to the same guys over and over again by the same guys. So just be polite and say 'I'm a man' and they will either apologise and leave or just leave you hanging.
