OK, what's that fastest you've ever driven? Tell us about it

118 in the Michigan northwoods; think I had another 5-10mph left before topping out, but something inside me said time to back off. Pure exhilaration.

It was kinda stupid, because approaching dusk, when deer are afoot; within 10 mins later, two deer bounded across the highway ahead of me.

Brands Hatch - a former Grand Prix Circuit - is on my doorstep, and I try and get to most Track Days with my Lotus Elise. I can't say I've ever pushed it that hard, though - a sedately 100mph. Well, I take such care to look after it during the week! And I've spun it a few times...I’m not tempting fate!

A few years ago, I had a Track Day with an ex A1GP racing car for my Birthday. The grip was amazing, but I don’t think I got it past 90mph on the straight before thinking I would kill myself. That’s was when I wasn’t stalling it, which was most of the time, especially when the rain came down. My family were watching, and needless-to-say, I suffered plenty of teasing afterward! Those cars aren't for fair-weather boy racers!

The fastest I’ve been on a closed track is 120mph in an old Vauxhall Cavalier (Opel Vectra) at Snetterton Formula 3 race track. That was some 15 years ago!

I don’t tend to break the speed limit on the open road - Speed cameras equal fines and points on your licence, and it’s also pretty much socially unacceptable over here. I’ve driven on many European roads. I’ve done 100+ on German/ Swiss Autobahns. If you enjoy driving for any reason at all, go to Switzerland...although, for me, Italy is the most scenic.

I've never been able to resist the temptation to at least try to get to 100 in everything I've ever owned.

I used to drive nothing but antique cars. My favorite, the 1959 Impala coupe with a (probably-we've never been able to find the code for this block) 400 small block someone had put in it, Was the fastest. Of course, top end is hard to tell with a "wind up" speedometer, but I had it buried a couple of times. I had a friend with a 1970 Nova we spent a lot of time putting engines in at the time. He ran it at the track some, but I don't remember the stats on it. When we put the 396 big block and the 4-speed in it, we took it out and ran it one night and put the old Impala next to it. In his words: "Man! I don't know what that (Impala) thing's got in it! I can beat it, but I sure can't embarass it!" And he couldn't really start pulling away from me till we hit about 80 or so.

I've had a couple of others that I've "exceeded the mechanical limit" on the speedometers as well. They included a 1960 Buick, a 1966 Thunderbird, and a 1969 Olds Delta 88 convertible. All of those speedometers top out at about 120 on the dial, but those speedometers are also not totally accurate. So I've been something probably in excess of 120, but not sure what! A couple of those cars really didn't feel like they were working particularly hard when the speedometer ran out of display, and continued to accelerate as long as I cared to hold down the pedal.

I tried to get over 100 in my 1965 Mustang convertible; but with that sorry little six banger and slushbox the valves started floating at about 95 and I had to cool it.

I'd happily go faster if I had a vehicle that could do it and a legal (or reasonably discreet) place to get away with it. I was on a job at a race track recently and now my wife is furious with my boss. I've suddenly arrived at the conclusion that if somebody ELSE can have a car that will go 170 MPH in 4 seconds on a 1/8 mile strip, I should be able to have one too..........................

Had a 70 1/2 Camaro, my father should have not allowed me to have this car but I think he liked it as much as I did. Had a 396 with a 4spd and the speedometer went to 150 .... I made it to 140-145 before the thing stared kinda bouncing .. scared the crap out of me.

closed.
I just bought the car, and I wanted to blow out the carb.
So I took it to the local track.

to this day no other car I have owned can come close to it.

About 125 mph in my Camaro SS. I was passing a group of Harley's, maybe 50 bikes in all, spaced out over a half mile.
