Yeah but Hockey in the UK is probably about as big as Rugby Union in the U.S
I live in Manchester and we have a team called the Manchester Storm (Now the Manchester Phoenix - which tells a story in it's self).
They were the best supported team in the U.K a few years back and Hockey was gaining popularity because it was on T.V over here. Then the T.V companies pulled out and the league more or less collapsed. They have tried to revive it recently but it really is small time in the U.K compared to Football, Cricket & Rugby.
Aw, that's sad, cyclops...but I do understand. You're right, and soccer (erm, sorry...football) suffers the fate of the bastard stepchild here. Even considering its popularity in my area it's never unheard of to get good seats for our major-league team simply by walking up to the box office 10 minutes before the match starts. The only time matches have sold out here were the friendlies between EPL/SPL teams that were touring (Celtic seem to really like coming here to get clobbered for some reason). Rugby is a club sport at best here, and cricket is something people make fun of me for watching. :sg
But you've always got your friendly neighborhood M&F hockey gurus to show you the ropes, ya know. Made more enjoyable by the fact that hockey chicks are all hot & flirty. ;)

*sigh* well.. could be worse.. at least we'll have some injured players back soon!
It was a good game. Burrows is impressive. I hate to say it, but the best looking team so far this year has got to be Montreal. They are extremely fast, good forecheck, and their passing is phenomenal. This from a Leafs fan...........................

I feel your pain brother. I'm a long time Kings fan. The last few years haven't been pretty. That said, the Kings do have some impressive young talent. Now if only ownership would spend a few dollars to compliment the youth with a couple of talented veterans and perhaps a first rate goalie. Unfortunately, I have lost all faith in ownership. Some other year I'd think, aw c'mon, you've still got...then rattle off names of 5 or 7 players who are no longer Devils now!! :sg I hear you, cherokee - if anything happens to Luongo the Canucks will be golfing even earlier than usual. It's rough to lose your #1 player, rougher still when that player happens to be your goalie!! I am all for tight defense (at least theoretically, for I am, after all, a Canucks fan) but come on, no team, however in love with the neutral-zone trap, should leave itself so wide open between the pipes like that.
Or maybe I am again projecting my Canuck angst. :p Either way, I hope the Devils can turn things around and that Marty makes a speedy recovery.

Ya, Han. The Hawks didn't have televised games, etc, cuz the owner wouldn't develop the team. He died, and his son was doing more. Got televised games again, and he's recruited some of the alum to make a presence at the games. (Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita)
I went to a game last spring in Chicago against washington, and they brought Tony E to do a spot. He still holds the rookie record for shutouts, I think. We had 2nd row seats. Those guys really aren't that big. And the defenders are just like those on my son's team. When a forward comes streaking down the ice with a puck, they get this "holy shit" look on their faces. It was fun.

I haven't been to a game in a couple of years. When we do go it is usually in the balcony...I actually like it up that high. I love to watch the plays develop. You can see so much from being up above the action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZWxErEbQkY
Hello out there we're on the air it's hockey night tonite
Tension grows the whistle blows-& the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps and the players bump and the fans all go insane
Someone roars "Bobby scores!" at the good ole hockey game
Chorus:
Oh the good ole hockey game is the best game you can name
And the best game you can name is the good ole hockey game
2nd period:
Where players dash with skates aflash the home team trails behind
But they grab the puck and go bursting up and they're down across the line
They storm the crease like bumble bees they travel like a burning flame
We see them slide the puck inside -It's a "1-1" hockey game!
Chorus:
3rd period: last game in the playoffs, too...
Oh take me where the hockey players face off down the rink-
And the Stanley Cup is all filled up for the chaps who win the drink-
Now the final flick of the hockey stick and a one gigantic scream-
The puck is in! The home team wins! The good ole hockey game!
Chorus:
repeat
3 times
He shoots he scores

Well, I'm from Chicago, and no matter how bad our teams are, we are faithful fans. I'm always pullin for the Blackhawks. They got this new kid, Patrick Kane, so they're startin to step it up. Also, the owner died, so his son was tryin to build the team.
And you gotta love Tony Espisito. If you're old enough to remember ....
Yes, Blackhawk fans are the most rabid I've ever seen in any sport. Now that Dollar Bill has gone to that huge blackout in the sky, we can finally breathe again. Home games are now televised in Chicago! For those of us weened on Esposito, Hull, Mikita, Magnuson, Martin and the rest, the pride has finally returned. It won't happen this year, in all likelihood, but at least there's a future for this team now...

The ironic thing is, last year when the Hawks were just out of their Wirtz-induced haze and were just learning how to skate again, they actually beat the Wings several times despite not making the playoffs. This year, when they've beaten some very good teams and appear to be headed to the playoffs, they haven't beaten the Wings once.
They won't win the Cup this year, but they should be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. If they can manage their cap space, with Toews and Kane and some very good players coming up for renewal soon, they should be a contender. They still have to figure out the goalie situaition.
And signing Quenneville was brilliant.
Of course, having Scotty Bowman in the front office helps...

What did Avery do that was so bad?? Open his mouth, so do so many athletes....and they dont get punished. i think having personalities liek Avery is good for sport.....athletes are turning into plain vanilla....they are friends, they text each other before and after games....go out to dinner, socialize, etc. Not necessarily conducive to rivalries and what makes sport great

My three year old son is learning new sports. He tries a different one every week at the YMCA. Last time it was field hockey, and he was so adorable as usual. All the little toddlers run and fall down with their sticks. Wednesdays are the highlight of my week because these kids are so fun to watch.
I think hockey would be fun sport, but it is not terribly popular in the States.

I have to admit, I'm sort of at a cross roads with him on this..........is what he did a suspendable offense?? No, I dont' think so. I mean, really all he did was tell an off-color joke and make a chauvenist remark in front of a camera. Stupid and classles...most definitely.......but suspension? there are guys that have done Far worse in lots of sports.
But on the other hand I give the NHL and the Stars alot of credit for demanding that their athletes conduct themselves like professionals. I wish other sports would hold them to the same standards. When you think about it, they are business owners.....if any of us went on the news and displayed that type of behavior do we think that we would get a pass from our employer?? Not in most cases.....if I was an owner I wouldn't allow any of my employees to project that image of my company. I know the whole free speech argue and all........but if I'm paying you 4 million dollars to work for me and abide by my rules......free speech is not really an option when you are in the public spotlight......ask any actor or politician...just comes with the territory.

Yeah, I'm ambivalent about it too. It was crass, sophomoric, stupid, vile, whatever. But worthy of a suspension? Meh...

I do agree completely. All too often pro athletes are mollycoddled beyond what an ordinary person would reasonably expect for a similar offense. Ironically, I think hockey players are generally better behaved than those in the other three major sports in North America.
Perhaps that has something to do with the kind of punishment meted out to Avery.
The Blackhawks drafted some kid by the name of Beach who had number one overall talent and end of the draft behavior issues that caused him to slide to number 11 overall last draft. I just read a report that he's already acting up in the minors.

One of the things I love about the sport is that despite its inherent violence, the great majority of the players are gentlemen and conduct themselves like men and not spoiled kids.
If you think Sean Avery is good for hockey you are sorely mistaken. Sean Avery is a disgrace to hockey. He lacks any class and he's a cancer on any team he plays for. When he played for the Kings, he would make fun of his teammate Dustin Brown because Brown stutterd. Can you imagine a teammate doing that in professional sports? Apparently, it got so bad that in resulted in fights in the locker room. Brown was a rookie at the time and very soft spoken. Now he is the team captain and has developed into a solid winger. I lost all respect for Avery when this was disclosed. His disruption in the locker room and his repeated childish and immature behavior forced the Kings to get rid of him. Good riddance Avery!

No apology necessary. The Flyers are on a role of late and the Kings can't expect to win if they can't score on the power play. And if anyone owes me an apology, its the Kings ownership for not landing the big time scoring forward the Kings so desperately need. They better make a serious run at Kovalchuk in the off season!

I would be excited about the 12 million cap space if I actually thought Kings ownership was poised to use it. However, I don't expect the Kings to make a big move. The owners are real estate moguls and, to their credit, they built a great arena in Staples Center and developed the surrounding area with condos, restaurants, a hotel, concert venues, an ESPN Zone, movie theatres, etc thus drawing people (and more conventions) to downtown LA. But they have never exhibited a passion for hockey or a committment to winning. The youth movement to them is simply a way to do things on the cheap. As a long time season ticket holder and a fan of the sport, its very frustrating indeed.

Yeah, that sucks when you HAVE the money and don't spend it...hell for 12 Million you guys could take a run at Pronger and Marty St. Louis and still fit them in your cap........hell the Flyers are Losing players just to get Briere back off IR and under the cap number....I'm sure you'd like to have a problem like that.

I think it could be a record like Ripken's, one that will probably never get broken. Goalies nowadays, don't play the 75 games a season like they used to and play on consistently good teams. He was lucky to play on a good team for a long time, but then again, the biggest reason they were good was because of him. So I guess you could call it the chicken or the egg syndrome....

I give the Bruins the edge on this one, much as I'd like to see a Canadian team go all the way. The Habs are just too small, and their locker room to fragile. If Alexei Kovalev is your "go to" guy you're in trouble. Not to mention Carey Price, like every Hab's tender since Patrick Roy, is overrated.

Nah, Han hates pittsburgh because they have a history of babies on their roster...Han also hates Crosby because he's a whiny punk as well. Han can hate lots of teams that are not Hannerific in Han's opinion!

I'm guessing there may have been one or two that may have slipped through the cracks that were heavy offensive teams without great D, but I can't think of any. But in any sport it's Defense that wins championships.....The Devils built a decade on only playing defense. Offense can get you into the playoffs, but if you want to go deep you have to have a defense....no question.

Either way the Caps/Pens series winds up, it has been great theatre watching Ovechkin, Crosby, and Malkin battle it out. A game 7 only seems fitting for this one. As for the next round...assuming my Caps win, and Carolina finishes off the upset, I like their chances against the Canes. Watching Ovie light up Cam Ward will be a treat indeed.
