Ca·nuck n. Often Offensive Slang.
A Canadian, especially a French Canadian.

Many dictionaries say simply ‘orig. unknown.’ The term is in little use today among us, except for the Vancouver Canucks hockey team. One may, on occasion, run into a jocular person (possibly in a U.S. bar) who will say, "oh, a Canuck, hah?" but the word seldom features in ordinary conversation. (It has been traced) through U.S. dictionaries as Canuck, Canack, Cunnuck and Kanuck, the last one (1835) meaning a Dutch or French Canadian. A Dictionary of Americanisms defines Canuck, Canack, and Cunnuck as "colloquial slang appellations for a native of Canada, although (within Canada) almost solely understood to be a French Canadian.

There is a theory that the word is derived from Connaught, a term said to be given by French Canadians to the Irish. There is a suggestion that it may come from the first syllable of Canada, combined with an Algonquin noun ending in –uc. The Oxford Companion To The English Language (defines the term as): "Canuck, 1820’s. Probably from the Iroquoian canuchsa, someone in a kanata (village)…but possibly from Hawaiian kanaka (man), through a pidgin used in the fur trade (in which Pacific islanders were employed), and taken into French as canaque, perhaps being originally applied to French Canadian canoemen. A nickname for a Canadian…but in the U.S. Northeast pejoratively referring to French Canadians."

Absolutely! When Gretzsky pushed to get him on our Olympic team, that was the last straw for me. There are countless young, talented, respectable hockey players in this country, and they allow this hotheaded bully to represent our country!

For once, I was glad they lost. And I'm glad it was Bertuzzi who was instrumental in the loss.

Good question, honey.
I think he should be forbidden to play as long as Moore is unable to play. If Moore returns to hockey, let Bertuzzi back. If it turns out that Moore is never able to play again, Bertuzzi is out of a job. Period.

Jesus there's a tread for me on here!

I'm a Hockey fan, huge, played allot refferied coahed and still play, I'm a Leaf's fan by default but I do enjoy the Hamilton Bulldogs AHL team for the Montreal Canadiens, cheap and great hockey.

My tip to anyone who wants to see uncurrupt hockey, go to your local rink and check a Midget AAA game. those kid's have more ball's then all the guy's on this site combined! Amazing to see the energy and tempo these kid's cant witstand.

I AM CANDIAN AND I LOVE HOCKEY.... and women :)

P.S: Cheap shot Bertuzy is out for 6-8 weeks minimum so dont worry about him. I do beleive there's allot going on in hockey games that allot of people miss, like for instance allot of these guy's know eatch other personally and there's allot going on in the background that folks miss. I dont think it's Bertuzzi's hit but the guy who fell over them that broke Steve Moore's neck but karma's a Bitch and somehow it will work itself out. I would of unloaded one of the biggest suspention and fines ever seen on him but that's just me. Unjustified Violence as nothing to do with hockey.

Speed and Skills perfect example of the moment = Buffalo Sabers, fun club to watch.

PPS: I really dig women....mmm they smell awesome!

Me too Trax. I used to love the sport of hockey when it was played in a different style. I firmly believe that hockey started going downhill when they started forcing the players to wear helmets. After that the stick penalties started to increase. There is way too much slashing, high sticking, cross checking and sp on penalties out there.
Now, with the new rule changes a few years ago and the influx of these European players, the game has changed to more of a skating/finesse game.
I grew up in Boston, a huge Bruins fan. I would go to a lot of games every year. In fact I went to the closing of the old Boston Garden and cried like a little baby the whole night. I have a puck from that night on my desk and I have an autographed stick by Bobby Orr hanging on the wall with the famouse picture of him scoring the winning goal in the playoffs against the Blues.
I have been her in South Florida for six years now. I never see the Bruins on tv and I'm not a Panthers fan. The Strike last year was the last straw for me, plus the Bruins have been so bad for so long that I just really don't care anymore.
Bring back pro Hockey like it was played in the 70's and 80's and maybe I'll start watching it again.

You're right, Big O. Once the helmet became mandatory, the stick work increased. The slashing, hooking, high sticking got out of control. Guys respected their opponents when they went in the corner by keeping the stick down since they didn't want to lose an eye themselves. Now, everyone looks the same. Plus, with the influx of European players, the normal fan doesn't know alot of these players so they can't feel that strong bond for their team since they player didn't come up through the minors and work his way to the NHL like they did in the old days. The WCHL, ECHL, IHL, AHL all had players that you saw and became fans of in your local area so you could root for them when they made the big club. Not that way with the europeans. Besides, the league does a horrendous job marketing the game anyway. Gary Bettman should look for another line of work. He's done nothing to help the game from a marketing perspective. Some of the rule changes I like but putting the game on Versus is just plain stupid. ESPN should be doing the games. They need exposure and they aren't getting it from Versus. Hell, the Bruins are offering buy one get one free for their tickets. Other deals like kids under 12 free. I say, reduce the ticket prices rather than charge exorbitant prices and they give a free one. Dopes, just plain dopes. (ouch, I fell off my soapbox)

True, though Glenn Anderson would stick people in the eye without or without a helmet. Players were always nasty (Mr. Clarke), but with helmets, there is a little less respect.

Now, everyone looks the same.

Not necessarily an issue. NFL players all where helmets as well. Safety does have to come first. I am not sure about your market, but up here in Vancouver, we all know what the players look like due to mass marketing.

Again, I don't find this an issue. We only recently got a WHL team in our market and even though it's neat to see guys like Brule play in the NHL after watching him in the juniors, it's not a deal breaker. It doesn't matter where the player comes from, if they play well, people will know them.

Besides, the league does a horrendous job marketing the game anyway. Gary Bettman should look for another line of work. He's done nothing to help the game from a marketing perspective.

Well, I agree. Get more games in HD. Get players to wear more team merchandise during interviews, etc...Again, in the Vancouver market, the players are highly visible, but that's definitely not the case in most US cities.

Some of the rule changes I like but putting the game on Versus is just plain stupid. ESPN should be doing the games. They need exposure and they aren't getting it from Versus.

I thougth ESPN didn't want it anymore? Again, in Canada we don't get that channel so I can't tell if Versus is better or worse than ESPN, but I'll take your word for it.

Hell, the Bruins are offering buy one get one free for their tickets. Other deals like kids under 12 free. I say, reduce the ticket prices rather than charge exorbitant prices and they give a free one. Dopes, just plain dopes. (ouch, I fell off my soapbox)

Crap, free tickets? We haven't seen that for years up here. There's a few years waiting list for tickets. It's almost a priviledge to attend a game up here ;)

Overall, though, our market up here is a hockey first market. No other pro team in town, so there is no competition. Boston has the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics that come ahead of the Bruins. There is only so much fan money to go around. Plus, they're sucking right now.

Hope you don't mind if I usurped your position on the soap box.

Twoblues, you make alot of great points. I didn't know Vancouver was such a great hockey town. That's fantastic. Boston used to be during the days of Orr, Espo, Middleton, Neely, O'Reilly, Bourque but it has slowly dropped off the map. The management of the Bruins (Jeremy Jacobs and GM Harry Sinden/Mike O'Connell) has stunk, with their self-imposed salary cap, whereby they wouldn't spend any money for good players nor pay decent money to retain their free agents. Tickets prices would constantly go up, for no reason, since the money wasn't going into the team and they owned the building so it wasn't a rent issue. Then they come out last year and have this cat that ate the canary look and tell people that they were right all along about the league being unable to support the big salaries and that they have been waiting for this time to come. They tell people they are prepared at a run at the Stanley cup and have an great team, as good free agent after good free agents sign with other teams. You saw what happened last year, they traded away the MVP, Joe Thornton. They are a bunch of boobs. Dolly Parton would be proud of that bunch. Like you said, there are the Patriots and Red Sox and we all see how well run those franchises are and they are winning championships so people are badly turned off.

I'm still on the fence for some of the things they did here when he was there but who knows, there's allot of unseen things in the background that we miss.

I was a Vancouver fan for years, but after what they did to Steve Moore, I will never watch another Vancouver game again. I can't understand how anyone can support an organization that would not only encourage but create the head hunt that ensued after Moore's hit on Naslund. Burke, Crawford, and May, just to name a few, were disgraceful in their conduct. And for any of the players to support Bertuzzi's cowardly attack on Moore is reprehensible.

Funny how everyone has conveniently forgotten what happened and just got back to business as usual after the strike was over.
Too bad Moore can't go back to business as usual. Ever.

You know i live here, and it disgusted us as well...it also brought up some very interesting legal points....we have not watched hardly any games this year ,the games are boring and unexciting..........

i think there is still quite a air of disgust hanging over this team...the fans arent there this year...there are many empty seats....but your right ,everyone forgets except the guy who had been changed for a lifetime..

I remember racing home from a night class to catch this game. I came home, my brother was already there and he told me the game was lost. The score was pretty lopsided and the Canucks were playing poorly. I sat down, watched a little and then saw the "event". I think everyone will say that what happened was certainly disagreeable. Bertuzzi was an ass, plain and simple. He made a mistake, sure, but he's also acts like a spoiled brat, not like a man. Whether or not Burke or Crawford said anything is pure speculation. Sure, there was probably talk of retribution, but I feel pretty sure that none of them said "break his neck".

Shitty things happen in all sports. Sometimes a player just goes nuts. Considering they are just overexcited athletes being cheered on by thousands of fans in a colliseum. Every sport has had it's fair share of issues. The Canucks are a much different team than they were 2-3 years ago.

It's true, there are empty seats, but they are still seats that have been bought. Every game is still a sell-out, but I'd imagine with the style of play the team is using these days (I'm not even going to mention the Nashville game last night, heck I just did), a lot of people just aren't showing up.

It can be hard with season tickets to show up to 41 games a year, sometimes 3-4 in one week. That's a huge time commitment. Much easier to watch on tv for me.

Plus, I don't think people have forgotten what Bertuzzi did, it's just that most have moved on. I put that Bertuzzi incident up there with Mike Tyson biting Hollyfield's ear for all-time crazy things to happen on a tv sporting event. (Well, I'll also add a crazy eye-gouging incident I saw in a Rugby game).

Like the Chicago Black Sox of 1919, nobody will forget what they did, but they'll still support the current White Sox.

The thing that's too bad is the team still as that around them and he's gone his marry way.

I'm a hard hitty scrappy shit disturbing player but I think the worst for that situation is that it showed a really dark side to what can happend during a game, even for something that happend in a previous game for that matter.

If you ask me, Bertuzzi's suspention should of eclipsed the one hunter got for body checking Pierre Turgeon from behind in 93 and the one Mcsorley got for hitting brashear with a baseball style hockey swing.

Bertuzzi's hit was deliberate, it was premeditated, therefor IMO he should of been banned from playing again bar none.

Here's the kicker for me. screw the NHL, why did the players association let him back? those guy's are so tuff to defend they're rights why wouldn't they impose punishment on a player that delibaretly attack another player? everybody knew they had Moores head on a platter is was just a matter of took it.

I beleive the NHLPA should of stood up and defend the poor guy but what do I know, Popularity is a bitch to fight agains sometimes.

Classic "star player" vs. "4th liner".

I must say though, that I am glad Bertuzzi is having a crappy season along with:

Dan Cloutier (I'm an all-star goalie worth more)
Ed Jovonovski (I need more money for my family)
Anson Carter (I want more money because I had one good season of the Sedins bouncing the puck off my stick)

End rant.

There was an article with the Sedin twins. They were asked who they'd really like to play with. They said, while they really enjoy playing with Naslund, they both would love to have Jagr on their line.

When Jagr wants to play, he's one of the best, that's for sure.

Tonight the Red Wings retired number 19 in a very emotionally charged ceremony invloving some of the most prestigous names in hockey. On hand to honor "The Captain" Steve Yzerman were hockey legends including Gordy Howe, Brett Hull, Igor Larionov and a few non player names that hold some places of honor in the hockey world; names like Lord Stanley's Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy, the Lseter B. Pearson Award, the Selke Trophy, the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy and the President's Cup among others. The players of the current roster wearing replica jersies commemorating all of the sweaters Steve wore in his long and ilustrious carreer, Red Wings, Team Canada and the Peterborough Petes.
Steve Yzerman was the consumate sportsman and the longest tenured team captain in NHL history. His loyalty to his adopted city and his beloved Red Wings is displayed through the continued relationship he has with the only professional hockey club he ever played with. Steve has left the ice, and the game shines a bit less after his skates left the ice, but he continues to support HIS team as the Vice-President of the organization.
Congratulations to one of the most deserving hockey players of all time!

In an era in sports where there are so many players that like to use the "what about me" approach to things, to honor a guy like Steve Yzerman is a great thing. This guy was the consummate gentleman, professional and team player, everything a captain epitomizes. What a credit to hockey he was.

I'm getting to that age when all the great players I've watched growing up are retiring. The last 5 years have pretty much seen a lot of class acts retire (sorry, I don't include Messier in there :p).

Great to see some great class acts get there jerseys retired. Though, I'd argue people like Housley getting his jersey retired in Buffalo or Vernon in Calgary (where he was routinely booed).

Hockey is a dying sport. Bettman has ruined the game and even the BOG. The scheduling is a mess, and there going to have to make major changes. They need to start selling the game on the youth players like Sidney Crosby.

Sorry Hoss, but I've boycotted the Canucks since the hit on Moore.
I bet the city is going crazy though!

Jazzy no one liked that hit on Moore. However, to get the rest of the story, Bertuzzi delivered a public apology stating it was never his intention to injure Moore so badly. There is considerable argument still ongoing legally as to whether it was Bertuzzi's punch that caused the injury to Moore's vertabrae or the subsequent piling on by both teams.
Bertuzzi was subsequently traded...He is also being sued for 10s of millions by Moore, and every relative he has.... Crawford, the coach at the time, was fired. :) :)
This is not the same team.
I am not excusing Bertuzzi... I hated seeing that sucker punch....but Moore was the guy who gave a concussion to Bertuzzi's best friend Naslund that sidelined him for 3 games .The hit to Naslund's head by Moore was not even penalised.
I would like to see all fighting in hockey abolished.
Go Canucks....this new team is fantastic :) :)

Abolishing fighting would make it a very different game...there isnt enough fights to warrant it...and the cheap shots wouldnt go away because it was not done in a fight....it was a cheap shot from behind....

I know the rest of the story firsthand, Rhumba and I'm sorry to say you are misinformed.

Go back and listen to Bertuzzi's public "apology". It was the most carefully doctored piece of bullshit I have ever heard. Go look at the hit again and again - better yet, watch it about 120 times and tell me what caused the injury. Go take a look at Moore's "hit" on Naslund about 120 times too and tell me if he actually hit him or if it was a fluke after naslund stumbled trying to trip Moore with his stick. Tell me which part of Moore hit Naslund's head, then get back to me. Tell me why every fight that Moore faught after that "hit" didn't even the playing field, which is the unspoken rule in hockey. Tell me who created the stir about revenge in the first place in order to create hype and encourage the ongoing rivalry, sell more tickets and generate more publicity.
After you've done that, get back to me and maybe we can talk.
