What would you do with $35,000? Would you ponder for a while? Would you pay off your bills? Would you put a down-payment on a home? Or buy the "toys" you could not afford before? Game system? Flat screen? Wardrobe?:sc

Had to put my husband on an allowance. Sounds harsh but he agreed to it because he knows how he is. He bought a tv, $400 rc car that's broken twice, lots of games. I paid off the vehicle, paid up car ins., paid off bills, and bought some (desperately needed) clothes and shoes. It just makes me wonder if men naturally veer towards the toys and women to the immediate finances...no offense out there.

Look, I've seen worse, had worse, lived much worse. Some of you may think I'm whining. My dream is to have my own house one day.
I am currently working on an autobiography. If I am fortunate enough to get it published and some of you read it, you may then understand why this is so important to me.:(

Why did he quit his job?
Look, I've seen worse, had worse, lived much worse. Some of you may think I'm whining. My dream is to have my own house one day. Right now we rent. My husband quit his job about 3wks ago. We have a cushion for a bit, thank God. However, now his reliability has come into question. He knew this was a goal b4 he quit. I seem to be the only one working towards this though. I work night shifts and would love to start over with a day job, make friends, have a life! But, I can't and wont. What happens when the funds run out? I guess I'm a bit resentful that he bought frivilous things and quit his job and here I am working 60hrs a week in the middle of the night with little sleep in the hopes of eventually owning a home. I'm afraid that his quitting has ruined that opportunity for our family. Any thoughts??

You seem stressed out hon.
Number one rule never quit a job, especially these days, without first securing another.
Try to relax and pursuade him to find work soon.
You have my empathy, believe me.
To achieve your goals, finances are prime and he should be made aware of it without getting him resentful.
My best wishes to both of you .

I was on food stamps in the 1970's for 3 months do to no fault of my own ( they had affirmative action and fired veterans)
Rather then sulking about my going to school for 5 years 10,000 hours plus 744 hours of class room studies (plumbing) I decided to try sewer and drain cleaning and let me tell you it is an amazing livelihood.
The kid that works for me started off @ $25 per hr and he is still learning.
Forget the high tech jobs go for the money as even the roto guys pay in excess of $75,000 per year and once you learn the trade the sky is the limit.
Where else could could someone average over $200 per hr and doesn't need even a high school diploma.
Just need insurance in most cases a license is not even required
Then once your established you hire some kids (over 18 year old) @$15 - $25 per hr to do the lifting etc.
Call any sewer guy or plumber and ask them how much to clear a basin or toilet stoppage ( they take an average of 7 - 10 minutes each)
Most of the equipment is paid for the very first time you use it like a closet auger cost under $30 for a good quality one and every time I use it I charge no less then $150 plus tax
Sometimes one has to think simple to make money and SERVICE work is the way to go.
Plumbing/ boiler installations and service are highly skilled professions (years of continuous training) but I must admit the most profit I make is from simple stoppage work where the skill level is not as acute and help is readily available

That is the first movie I watched when I hitched up my surround sound on my 60" HD set that was awesome. Also Black Hawk Down, the helicopters were awesome. You might want to try Terminator also. When the lasers are being shot it's unreal

GREAT advice same as I gave my children don't quit until you have something lined up or are willing to start your own company.
ALSO
If the job your working at has any type of training take full advantage of it as the education goes with you it is yours to keep.
Over the years many of my past employees went on to open their own plumbing companies and other ex employees I sub contract work to and 1099 them.
I got tired of having a $27,000 + a week payroll for 18 people so I scaled down to myself and a helper and my NET income stayed almost the same
I met a couple a few weeks ago both around my age (59) and they were painting a single family home.
They told me when he lost his job they decided to start their own company and neither one had any formal education so they started painting and are working together doing it for the past 18 years.
They have a 3 family home already paid off with an income of $3,200 per month
As long as someone can say "would you like fries with that order sir" they can get a job.
This is America there is no such thing as I cannot find a job.
As Judge Judy said
"go out and pick up cans and bottles"
I met people who are classified as retarded cleaning offices and working in factories and fast food places.
I met people with no legs working behind a computer.
As an employer I think I heard every excuse known to man and then some.
If work is so hard to find then why are people sneaking into this country?
I retired at 40 years old got bored stiff and started another company just to keep busy and my mind active as working to me is fun rather then sitting around doing nothing.
The key is to find what you really enjoy and the money will come rolling in.
If it is just a job forgetaboutit you wont be happy and thus wont be any good at what your doing as your heart is not in it.

I'm a gadget guy but first would pay off the credit cards, do things to the house like put new windows on it and then probably treat myself to a little fun with alot of it in the bank, maybe for some vacations but really as an emergency fund in case the furnace needs to be replaced or something like that.

$35.000 is not enough money to quit a job over.. Like some others here have a inheritence coming but can wait a long time due to rather have my folks in my life. So for now it's collecting interest. But if I were to get $35.000 right now I would get a copy of my current credit report and pay off all my bills. Buy my kids some new clothes as for myself. Seems mom's don't get new clothes til the kids move out lol....the rest I would go to my dad's financial accountant and have him invest it etc so when I do retire I have a nest egg to rely on. But honestly even if I won the lotto I can't see myself not working in some shape or form.

Interesting question. I would buy a new van for my wife and pay off our bills. We do not have much debt so that would allow me to still have around $5,000. I guess I would save some of it and then do something fun ( a trip) with the rest.
