Good peeve! Many years ago I majored in social psychology. Used to think "oh, the poor babies. Not their fault." Now I'm seeing second, third, and fourth generations doing the same thing! Shame on us for allowing it!

Once again, I got asked today if I'm going to have any more children. To be precise, a woman at the gym said, "Oh! You can't have just one!! You have to have more!" What an idiot. As if she has any idea of what we've gone through. I was not in the mood to be generous, so I told her I'd had four miscarriages since I'd had my son. She was apologetic, but I wasn't interested in hearing her damage control. People have no business commenting on other's family situations.

AMEN SISTER! After I had a few miscarriages I heard comments like "When are you two going to start a family?". ("We're leaving that one up to God." became our standard response and that sure beat out..."as soon as we can get one to survive pregnancy".) It's painful! Don't they even have a clue? You don't ask questions like that.... and you don't ask "When is the baby due?" just because a woman of childbearing years has a tummy!

... and just for the record I did NOT wait too long to have a child! Nature waited too long to give me one!

Well, I have never had children...it just wasn't meant to be I suppose....but the rudest remark I have ever heard was from my hubby's youngest brother's wife....

while on line to get food at the buffet of a family celebration....she turned to me and commented that she and one of my other sisters-in-law had discussed the fact we had no kids and decided we didn't want any....
I just stared at her blankly and said nothing...because had I reacted...I would have punched the bitch in the face....

No kidding! I especially loved hearing that after every miscarriage! Most of mine were pretty far along in my pregnancy, so I'd have a tummy for a few weeks afterwards.

I remember one day - it was the first day I was feeling half decent after a rather devastating miscarriage, and I decided to ride my bike to the playground with my son on the back. We were having a wonderful time playing and laughing, and for a few minutes my cloud lifted, until an extremely stupid woman asked me when I was due. Not feeling very magnanimous, I snapped back at her that I wasn't pregnant, that in fact I'd miscarried just four days before that and to mind her own business.
Why is it always women who ask these tactless, invasive questions?! They of all people should know better!

Very admirable, Cher! Considering who made the comment, and the fact that you were in a public place, that was an appropriate response. I've just never been very good at keeping my feelings to myself, even with family.

Kissie, back in the early 60's my Mom had a miscarriage and they did that to her too. When the other new moms asked what she had...

The next day her doctor came in and insisted on a private room.

This is how the conversation went....

I answered and this man told me that I had won a $100 gasoline gift card and $400 travel flying voucher. He verified mty name and address and then wnted to know the name of my bank....said that I had a "prefered account". I told him I would not give him the name of my bank and he started arguing with me! Told him that was too personal of information to give out over the phone. He said that 100's of people had seen me walk in and out of my bank and that the names of banking institutions were not classified information. Told him that it is very rare that I visit my bank and that information was not his concern. He said that I won these things and he just needed information to verify and that, by me stating the name, he could not use that information to scam me in any way. Told him I was glad to have won but he already had my name and address...just send the damn prize already! He told me to have a good day and hung up.

I think women feel they have a bond with other women that they can't have with men due to the fact they can bear children. Because of that, I think it is just natural for a woman who has not had any pregnancy issues in her life to just assume that all women are just like her and don't think things through. I believe that is just a female trait. I'm not being sexist, believe me, but I have heard many experts and ready many articles about women and they often speak before they think whereas men think before they speak. Due to this difference in the sexes, women tend to offend other women many times more than men offend women. I was very surprised when I had heard of this.

You were so right not to give him the info! There are too many scams out there!

Recently I got an email about a family in the UK who died in a plane crash and that they needed me to contact them to begin dispersment of $12.2 million dollars. Well they sent another one, with a photo of the death certificate, a photo of a passport, and a deposit certificate photo. Well anyhoo I found this site on the net to report fraud, so one night at 2am at work I emailed the info to it and a brief description of the details. I figured in a few months I might get a response but, OMFG 5 minutes later my cell phone rings and it was the FBI telling me this was a Nigerian scam. Well I knew it was a scam lol but the phone call from the FBI was freaky.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Have a friend who actually fell for something like that. She was accepting packages from this guy and redelivering them to a different address for him. The FBI showed up at her door and threatened to arrest her and take away her child. This man was also from Nigeria and had gotten a few women before her to transfer the stolen computer goods. Scary stuff!

One thing that really rankles me is that I bust my ass day in and day out, paying for health care for my family and I get bill after bill for doctors and hospital bills that are not paid for fully by my health insurance. I have no problem paying a small co-pay, but my health insurance should cover the rest period. Now I have medical bills up the wazoo that I owe and will have bad marks against my credit because of my slowness in paying them. Yet, if I were a illegal alien, I could walk into any hospital in the country, get medical treatment, and walk out, not owing a thing. Something has to be done about this inequity, plain and simple.

Oh my God! Don't get me started on this one!! Our out of pocket expences on doctors visits and medications are about $5,000.00 a year and are only expected to go up because so much is not covered and a member of my family has a chronic condition... and that doesn't include what we spend on dental.

I hear you on that also. I have Delta Dental and some coverage through my Blue Cross Federal Health plan, plus my wife pays for dental through her work just for her. She has had work done since January 1st and has already paid about 600 out of pocket, even with 3 coverages. Why? What one doesn't cover the others should to the point we shouldn't have to pay a penny. This is friggin ridiculous. Plus, now she as reached the $1500 cap so she can't do anymore for the rest of the year.

Been reading the complaints about the medical insurance. Your problem isn't with the insurance company --- it's with the person who guided you. You picked the coverage - you should have been given the information needed to make an intelligent decision. Invariably, there are higher cost coverages available, and, by definition, the increased cost of insurance more than offsets the claim money saved (your premium will be less than what it would cost you, on average, to not have the coverage).

From what I can see, most of you need a Health Savings Account (HSA). HSAs typically have a high deductible ($3000- $5000) and a very low cost catastrophic policy for everything above it.

The philosophy is that you put aside the deductible each year (into a savings fund, IRA or investment). The income received from the investment stays in the fund, and is available for use. When you become eligible for Medicare, the money remaining in the investment fund becomes a standard IRA, subject to its rules and tax implications. However, it must be said that there is NO requirement to put aside the premium --- that's just the target.

The money invested in an HSA is pre-tax dollars (that's like 25% free money from the government), and any withdrawals to pay medical expenses are also tax free. (That means on a medical costs of $5000, you reduce your tax liability by $1250.) There is some discussion that the premiums paid for the catastrophic insurance may be tax deductible, too -- but I havent' heard any final resolution on that. (Geek -- you're our resident tax advisor -- what have you heard?)

I suggest you get some professional advice (NOT from an insurance agent or the HR person at work) to help you make the right choices for your particular situation.

I agree with you Spare, there are better policies with more coverage but I dont have access to them. I have the best policy among 10 that my employer offers. My complains is with the insurance companies, the doctors, hospitals, drug companies, in general. We go to the doctors, they charge a fee for their service, they submit the bill to the insurance company and the insurance company decides how much of that bill they are going to pay and the balance gets kicked back to us, the patient, who already pays premiums that are very high and a co-pay for the appointment. That should be enough from us, period.

The answer isn't finding a way to take more money out of my paycheck, whether it is with pre-tax dollars or not. It is the fact that I need to pay any more at all. I realize doctors have a tremendous amount of overhead due to the cost of their practice and all the loans they had to take out just to go through medical school. Plus, with the importance of their position in our society, I have no trouble with them earning a good living. But when insurance companies just choose to unilaterally tell a doctor what they are going to pay him, which doesn't cover their costs to operate, why should we be caught in the middle? Yet, illegals can get whatever care they need for nothing, nada, zippo. Something is seriously wrong with the system.

I hear you on the illegals getting away without paying a penny. Everyday that I work, I see about 3-4 illegal immigrants...come in have a baby, even a c-section, rack up a bill of 10,000 and leave with a baby and the hospital just eats the costs cause they can't refuse patient care. The only way we turn away a patient is if they are non compliant with their care. The doctors get just as frustrated with the health insurance companies not wanting to pay this or that, makes them so mad. Even us healthcare workers don't have good insurance, but my sister who has it through UPS, omg, $10 to have her baby. When I was pregnant and had hyperemesis (sick the whole pregnancy) my insurance would only pay for me to take this medicine once a day and I needed it twice. My doctor got on the phone with the insurance company and chewed them out. He said either you allow it or I will hospitalize her throughout her whole pregnancy and send you the bill for that...which of course you'll pay. He said so what makes more sense to you, pay for another pill or a huge hospital bill...cause I'll keep her here the whole 9 months if I need to. To which of course I gave him a dirty look lol, he winked. Needless to say I got the meds I needed. The doctors all the time are dropping certain insurance companies because they pay so poorly. They say medicaid patients pay better than most insurance companies. Yes, something is wrong with our system. For people to be on welfare getting better coverage than people paying out of pocket, burns up every nurse and doctor I know.

Here is someone that deals with this first hand....it's a crying shame. In RI, along with all the other costs that doctors have, that some of them have moved out of state because of the huge cost of malpractice insurance. We've gotten into such a litigous society that it's not making it worthwhile for some doctors to practice since they are being pinched every way possible. It's not going to get any better until we fight back. Plain and simple. At the heart of the problem is the illegal problem. Without the extra costs the hospitals incur that are not covered, they wouldn't have to raise their costs for "paying" customers and this cycle of "who's going to pay" would slow down. Even as it is, if you go in the hospital now, they are trying to send your ass home as soon as your in there.

Frankly, it's a dollars and cents decision -- insurance companies won't pay out more than they take in. By mandating how much they will pay, the insurance companies are actually helping to control costs. Doctors and hospitals realize that people are not bottomless pits of money --- so, they have to hold their costs in line with what insurance companies, and the people, can pay.

It's not just illegals that get "free" medical support --- it's anyone who does not have insurance. So, the logical question becomes ---- why would you buy insurance to pay for something that you can get free? Things that make you go hmmmmmmm........

Sorry, I don't agree -- the problem isn't the illegals, though they are symptomatic of the problem. There are significantly more citizens getting free medical care than illegals.

The local hospital here is city-owned. Because of it, the books are open to public scrutiny. Last year, they wrote off $61M for "indigent care." That's a staggering number ---- until you consider that they booked $1.3 billion in billings. What that means is that every person's hospital bill was raised less than four percent as the result of indigent care. For a $5000 bill, the added cost was $200 - hardly enough to be noticed.

I believe the problem is three-fold.... hospital mismanagement that drives up service costs, doctor greed (it is, after all, a monopoly), and unrealistic expectations by consumers. There is no fathomable logic that says that $4000 a year in premiums should cover $250,000 in medical costs (it would take 60 years to break even -- assuming no other medical costs). Even the Law of Large Numbers (that's the one insurers use to estimate how many people will have a catastrophic incident) mandates a higher payment than that.

Your right, it not just the illegals, but at least the other people were born here and are citizens, people who have earned the rights of an american citizen. At least stopping the illegals would put a dent in the problem, which would make it more manageable and would give the entire industry a better basis to make their financial decisions upon for the rest of us.

One thing we do to make it paying the deductable easier...

I signed up for a Flexible Spending account at work. You choose the amount you think you will need for the year....they take it out of each check before taxes and place it in an account. I then turn in my receipts as I spend money on healthcare...co pays, prescriptions, even over the counter stuff. It has made it easier for us to manage the leftover not paid by insurance.

Hey Annie.....In Michigan we have something called Childrens Special Healthcare Services. Its for chronic conditions that won't go away. I put my kids on it back when Hubby lost his 20 year job due to the plant closing. We had no insurance and we have Hemophilia & VonWillebrands in our family. I am the mother of all carriers :( Anyway.....call your local County Health Department and ask them. It goes by income, if you don't make much it's free coverage...if you make decent money then you have to pay a monthly premium. It still pays for lots and saves you money. Its not just for poor people. We all pay into it...why not use it if we can. :55

Why, when we call a company that has voice prompts, when we are an English speaking nation, do we have to press 1 for English? Why? If another language is needed other than English, they should press the appropriate number, not the people that speak the official language of the nation whereby the company resides.

FLEX accounts are a great deal, if ........ the only danger is that any FLEX money not spent by the end of the year is lost. You don't get it back. (Who gets it? The government!) So, you need to manage that contribution very carefully.

I'm sitting here frustrated and pissed off. I just got a new computer and it came with a month free use of Napster. I just spent a whole day downloading music so I could make a cd to listen to in my Jeep. As I'mselecting the songs that I downloaded, a blue icon shows up next to 80% of them. I click on one of them and it says that I have to get more burn rights or the music won't play on a cd player. I guess all this is good for is to download music into an ipod.

:55MCat, it's for ADHD and that is considered a psychological issue and most, if not all insurance carriers exclude that. All of his pediatrician's visits that are for his ADHD testing and his neuropsychiatrist visits are excluded. His meds and bloodwork are though, with a very high deductable.

I really have no idea what kind of psychological services our county might offer, but I do know that the Cook County medical system is completely overwhelmed right now... it's pretty sad. (Cook County covers Chicago also.)

As someone who sells these policies eveyday, the HSA's are a wonderful investment. Not only are they pre-tax, but with medical costs on the rise and the medicare program in such a fragile state. It is very wise for couples and families to start a HSA, especially for the future.... Worth every minute of time it takes to start one. Most banks and investment institutions are supporting this type of account.
I say consider it.
Good advice Spare....

So, Amazon, here's a clue. I'm already aware of these books - Indeed, I'm the one who put them in my wish list. If I wanted to pre-order them before they were released, I would have done that in the first place. You'd be better off telling me about unfamiliar books that I haven't already made a decision on.

A question --- I'm curious.

Is it the issue of the seat, or simply that they don't do it? By that, I mean, why is this an issue? Last time I checked, the seat goes up and down. It would seem that all should be responsible for getting the seat into the correct position when they use it. Why would it be an issue?

Or, is it a power trip? I mean -- it would seem logical that, in deference to the people who are going to use if after you, that you would make sure the lid is in the UP position. Isn't that the counterpoint to what you are demanding of them?

(Can you believe we actually talk about such silly things?)

Don't you think that posting such silliy things give a break from the ordinary at times, like should the toilet paper be placed over or under or just put it on the vanity and forget about it??!!

I don't demand it of them, nor do I even bother mentioning it. Although it's not the awakening one would hope for in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning ... when your half asleep and your ass hit's the water, the next thing that goes through ones mind is "I hope whoever atleast flushed!!!" :D

Spare if your next I shall leave the seat up for you :kk

well, I hate to categorize this as a peeve, but....

It is not my favorite moment when, after having spent 20 minutes typing out a post of particular interest to me, and thoroughly checking for grammar, I hit the send button....

and my connection is lost, thus deleting all my info!

Person using lift - you got on the elevator and looked at the buttons. The floor you want is already lit. Cool. So why the fig are you vigorously pummeling the button 10 or 15 times? What? Let me clue you in. There is no secret turbo mode engaged by using the super-secret pummel the button technique that will make the lift rocket to your destination. Nor will it bypass everyone else's floor to drop you off first.

One of these days you will do this before I've had sufficient coffee and my last nerve will snap.

Speaking of toilets, why does everyone battle about the seat being up or down? Why is the lid up anyway?? Do you really want to look in your toilet everytime you walk by it? I can think of nicer views.

In our house, we ALL put the lid down because it's more pleasant to look at, and it saves the poor cat from falling in all the time! Yes, that was originally the reason we did it, now we all just do it out of habit.

Cars or trucks that tail gate me on my bike I can only see there windshild in my mirror, Cell phones when driveing or in a store but I get realy up set when there talking in the checkout at the cashregister, when someone pulls out off a side street in front of you then only go's 300 foot to yurn off when theres no one behind you for miles. kids runing around in a resturant and trying to grab your frys, or Kids in the resturant with green snot on there face. when a friend says will take my car or truck but you have to move junk and trash to make a spot to sit down. "last" when someone sets a case of emtey beer bottels in the hiway for someone to hit.

Due to a change in my schedule I just happen to be working during the beginning of a PGA golf tour in Tulsa. My little hotel that throughout the year costs me about $60-70 per night. Well talk about a fricken mass price goudging going on. My little hotel is now $180.00/per night oooooh and that is cheap! Some are $300.00 to yes I am serious $10,000.00/per night!

Talk about pissed off! Now it appears I have to work 13 hrs tonight, drive 2 hours home, sleep for a bit, get up and drive back 2 hours, work another 13 hr shift and then drive back home!

So I'm standing in line with the rest of the herd at Mickey D's today at lunch. It's a little more crowded than usual; each line to order is about five people deep. There are three tills on the front counter, but only two are for inside service. How do I know this, you ask? Because of the 8" x 12" laminated sign in front of the third till, which reads "This till is for drive-thru orders ONLY!!!"

Anyway. Standing in line, standing in line, standing in line. It's taking quite a while, for some reason, but no big deal; I've got a book.

I sense someone standing to my left, and glance over. There's a guy at the counter with three kids, and his wife is behind him. At least, I assume she's his wife; she keeps orbiting him. He's taken up station at the till. The one with the sign that says "This till is for drive-thru orders ONLY!!!"

I wonder briefly why the man is standing there? Probably has a problem with his order, or wants some extra mustard sachets, or something. None of my business. I delve back into the plot intricacies of Carl Hiaasen.

Finally! I get to the counter. I place my order for salad. I look again to my left after I order. Guy's still there. Three kids are still there. Woman is still there. Now a sixth person has joined the group, standing behind the woman. Doesn't seem to be part of their chaos; looks like a construction worker of some sort.

But the man is now affecting my herding ability. In this McDonald's, you place your order, then move a step or two to the left of the till. That's where they serve your food when it's ready, yersee. There's even a helpful laminated mat placed on the counter, with a big "Pick up your order HERE" imprint on its far left side. The man is standing right in front of that imprint. The guy who placed his order right before me can't herd properly, since the other guy is blocking the end of the cattle chute. I moo impatiently, but to no avail.

As I'm standing there patiently, swatting flies with my tail, the guy leans over the counter and twitches the sleeve of the girl who took my order.

"Sooo, you tell me, is anybody gonna take our order here or wot?" he asks. Hey, you never believed those urbane British Gent folklores anyway, right?

Instantly my bovine senses are on alert. This guy is breaking the Code of the Herd! He's moved to the end of The Chute, and is now affecting the speed with which the McDonald's girl can fulfill my salad order! He can't do that! I toss my horns and moo more strenuously, but he takes no notice.

"That's the drive-thru till, erm sir," the girl answers.

"You need to have a sign, then," he says. "There are a bunch of people in line for this till. You should alternate us in or something."

I look back. That is true; the line behind him has now swelled to approximately five people (not counting his kids and possible wife/satellite). They are chewing cud contentedly. They have fulfilled their herd responsibility of *'''Forming an orderly Line'''*.

The girl is quicker on the uptake than I am; she immediately recognises the Emperor of the World wants his five Big Macs made snappy and "Supersize me, babe". Her actions are swift and decisive -- she turns and taps the shift manager, and goes back to her till.

Shift manager comes up. He's obviously tired and harried; it's the middle of the lunch rush. He's filling three orders and balancing sixteen shakes with one hand, while he runs a till with the other. "Yes erm sir?"

The Emperor speaks. "We've been waiting in line, and no one has taken our order." I moo in disagreement (softly, but belligerently). That was no darn line you were waiting in. You just walked up to the counter and stood in front of the till. The till with the sign. The sign that ... well, you know.

The shift manager looks puzzled. "This is the drive-thru till. It's not for inside orders."

The Emperor does not raise his voice. Another sign of true power. That should have tipped me off, but I'm still in herd mode. And the end of The Chute is still blocked. "I've been standing in line, waiting for someone to take my order."

The shift manager still doesn't realise who he's dealing with :slap head:. "Sir, there hasn't been a line here. I'm on drive-thru; I've been running this till. You can't have been standing in line."

"If this till is for drive-thru, you should have a sign," said the Emperor. Wordlessly, the shift manager touches the laminated sign. The sign right in front of the Emperor's navel.

"There are a lot of people standing in this line," said the Emperor, still without raising his voice. That is true; embarking herd members, assuming their Emperor would not be stupid enough to stand in an area without a functioning till, formed up behind him. There is now a line behind the Emperor fully as long as the lines at the other two tills. "I suggest you alternate us in on that till." He points to the one in front of which I'm still stuck (on account of The Chute being blocked...By him.)

The scales suddenly fall from the shift manager's eyes. He has an epiphany; he recognises the august presence who stands before him. He turns to the counter girl and says "Work these people in." And turns to fulfil his other obligations.

My food arrives at the end of the chute; I pick it up (daring to enter the Sphere of Imperial Influence to do so) and go sit down. Wild ideas are coruscating through my mind as I chew my cud. I didn't even know we had an Emperor of the World! How powerful he must be, to alter the plainly stated Laws of McDonald's! How important he is, to not only deem his time more valuable than the others who waited in the proper lines, but to immediately elevate the other Herd Members who unknowingly got into line behind him and who now will get served faster than they should have! How lucky we all are that he has reproduced, so that his offspring can carry on the Imperial Way!

Ultimately, however, my wayward and disconnected brainwaves distilled into three crystal-clear thoughts as I walked back home:

1) The Emperor of the World is not nearly as hairy as I'd thought he'd be.

2) His more ardent followers will be distressed to learn that he apparently can't read what-so-ever.

3) I would have surely gored him if it wasn't for his regal kids...

the last thought is just aesthetically pleasing...no need to write in!

Sounds like a good argument for universal healthcare to me.
