Yeah I know you girls all got a hotbutton. That wasn't what I was thinking about though. Is there something your spouse does that can make you see 'red?'
I 'spose there are several, but one of mine is when Lady P criticizes my driving. This has been going on for the entire 31 years of our marriage, and it never changes.... and I really AM a good and safe driver too. We had a 2 hour drive to visit her relatives last weekend. She started in with just a comment or two. I ignored her for an hour and finally blew up. We had a class 1 screaming match and weren't speaking by the time we arrived for dinner. I guess we've been married too long though. As soon as we arrived, we switched it off and had a good time the rest of the weekend. I let her drive home. Wasn't worth another fight.

Couple of Lady P's are pulling the shower curtain closed to let it dry out.... and the ol' put the toilet seat down....... heh heh After she fell in a few times in the middle of the night (she never turns a light on when she gets up), I decided I better pay more attention to that one.

oh, yeah .... directions ..... I decided to let my wife give me directions to a place I hadn't been before. After a few 'turn here's and turn there's, followed by turn left up there, and turn righ over there. She was SO totally lost!
Fortunately I had her write down the address.... I found the place in less than 5 minutes ( in her defense I will say she got us close)

heh heh...... ya can't please 'em. I asked Lady P if I was driving too fast..... 'no.' Was I driving erratic? ...... 'no.' I asked her then "well just what is it that you're so upset about?" He will ask a question and I will answer his next question before he asks it so hes such a smart ass he will ask the question to what I said first and I will answer the first question then. It absolutely drives him nuts the kids crack up. Its like I anticipate the question, but his first one was unnescessary. Sorry Marycat, its like arunning joke around here. I have learned over the years that if we are going someplace we havent been, and have directions, THAT I need to be driving NOT him. He cant listen to directions for nothing. On the way home on I95 he tells me to look for the exit, I tell him 2 miles, i tell him 1 mile , next exit, what is he doing looking left above the trees at a billboard sign and drives right past the exit. THEN wont admitt he did wrong, THATS my biggest pet peive. so I would rather drive and have him sit and be quite. I get us there despite his , you turned on the wrong road, you were supposed to go north, etc etc. I just drive and get us there and he still wont admitt I am right and it been almost 25 years!!!
MY 11 year old son told us on the to FL that when we arrived we would have to go to separate rooms and think about the way we acted towards each other! NOW what does that say!! The almost 16 girl tells me on the way home that we need counseling after he says I need a psychiatrist. He's loosing it and they know it! OK now that I have vented I feel better.:thankyou:

I know you weren't asking for advice but here is some anyway : )
Most of us who have been married awhile, fall into patterns - especially when it comes to arguments with our spouses. If you think about it, they say one thing - you say another and it's basically the same argument time and time again.
The next time - try responding differently. Say or don't say something they are expecting! You can break the pattern but it takes one of you to do it.

My wife sometimes comes home and sits down with the paper in the kitchen whileI cook supper... she's the better cook, but likes the service... if I got serviced after I wouldn't feel so taken advantage of! She'll climb in bed and go to sleep without a word! Like.. do I exist??? oh and as soon as I start to do something, anything at alll she'll suddenly be inspired to do all these other things completely unrelated to what I'm doing, but she'll expect me to stop what I'm doing and help her.... nasty nasty woman....like she's trying to distract me so I can't succeed..... and she wonders why I just sit on the couch staring off into space...

Zpanther
08-17-2005, 12:51 PM
I'm one of those people who does like to argue. I don't mean I enjoy those conversations where it gets angry and mean. But I do enjoy talking with people who have opposing opinions from mine. I guess it's that I don't learn all that much talking with people who agree with my views. It's stimulating. Sometimes I've even taken a position I don't really believe just to see if the other person can articulate what they say they believe. I like it when someone questions my views and sometimes (although not very often) I even change my mind.
Annie
08-17-2005, 01:42 PM
Interesting question...I have made some of my nearest and dearest friends through an argument. The best ones for me are through e-mail. It gives me time to mull over my response and keep my emotions in check. I had one that lasted a few weeks and it was the best because both of us were mature enough to really look at both sides and now that person is one of my best e-mail friends. I prefer the word debate for that though...now a real argument...that's what I do with hubby!

I enjoy arguing, in fact, its part of what I do for a living. I am selective about those things I'll argue about, though. Religion is a topic that is not really subject to logic, so I never venture there. Politics is another subject in which positions are usually staked out pretty firmly, but when the right topic presents itself, I can't seem to avoid jumping in to the fray. Arguing about sport, music, movies - anything related to entertainment is great fun for me. With my wife, most of our arguments are around schedules, kids and household repairs, none very serious anymore.
I don't like to argue, it makes me tired.

discussion and debate are good for a relationship. Arguing does creep in though when one or both sides have strong convictions regarding an issue or do not listen to what is being said. Each person must feel comfortable about voicing their thoughts and feelings in a relationship.

one of my promblems is i like to add a E or a R to words that don't need them..My hubby think i might be a little (ok a big word for me) deslyickic(sp) so bear with with me. I have even put words into spellcheck that i think are wrong, but are right., but they don't look right to me on the screen

I cannot leave an error go unaddressed. Even though it is of no significance, I still must correct.
Why? Because I have to -- it's in my genes. In truth, I suspect it is an opportunity to show superiority.
What upsets me? Over-reaction. Everything becomes a big crisis -- and, oh by the way, it's all my fault.

So, I must ask the question of both Annie and Penny -- how do you let him know it's very important to you? Before or after you get upset? What is the signal he is supposed to read, and so often misses? (I got to admit -- I must be blind, cuz I can never see it coming.)
Does this fall into the "Well, if you don't know, I'm not going to tell you" category?

Because sometimes women need to talk things out, men vent, women talk it out. It's the same thing they do with their friends. They talk to their friends and their friends go home... they don't always try to fix it. Once they talk things out it's usually over for that topic... leave it alone!

OK -- let me see if I got this right ---
1) Men should know intuitively when something is important to you. There are no clues or signals -- we just oughtta know.
2) When something is wrong, we should know intuitively when we are to fix it, and when we are to leave it alone.
Is that about it?

Well Spare, I just asked my husband about #1. I wasn't aware that I would be giving him signals, let alone what they might be. He said it's the tone of my voice when I first approach him. The first words out of my mouth tell the whole story of my mood. But that just us.
As for #2. I think the best approach for this would be to say "Honey, is there anything I can do to help? I can tell this bothers you." and really meaning it.

First, I am glad you asked your husband. Nice to know that we might have fostered communications.
It is good that your husband had picked up signals you didn't even know you were giving. Of course, it's kind of tough for me to pick them up when i am hiding behind the couch!

I over re-act when I think he isn't prioritizing according to MY priorities. I get crabby and that puts him in a bad mood. There are several things I do that piss him off. I don't mean to, but I'm only human.
I think the thing that got to him the most though was that six year stretch. How he put up with that I'll never know, but he did and I'm forever grateful for it. And now he knows that.

When I'm nervous or uncomfortable, I'll crack a joke, and sometimes it's just not appropriate. I have lots of others, but that was the first one that came to mind.

Most of the time he comes home about even, but he stinks of cigar smoke and has had way to much to drink. One night he couldn't even climb up the stairs to bed.
Huh! Sorta sounds like someone I know coming home from girls night out... but I don't think she smokes cigars.... well, maybe she does.

I can get pretty pissed if I ask him to do something and several days, several weeks, and yes several months later it still isn't done. Hell I figured out it doesn't do me anygood to get pissed about it because he'll do it when he gets good and ready, or I just end up doing it myself.

I will be talking to my husband for ten minutes and he looks like he is listening but ten mins later he will ask me what did you say? :(
That's what makes me see red :D then if he senses that I'm on to his act of not listening he will say "no really I'm listening now what did you say" :sp:

Could it be that just isn't as important to him as it is to you? We both know that "ask" turned to "tell" months ago!

You know -- I really got to tell you -- I absolutely admire you ladies. I can't imagine what it is like to live with someone so detestable as you have made men sound in the last couple days. Dirty slobs who never listen --- won't do what you tell them ---- intentionally ignore your requests ---- won't lift a finger to help -- never recognize your contributions -- force themselves on you so that you have to give it up just so they stop whining --- get you pregnant and then run off fishing with the boys -- force you to leave your children, and go out into the work force.
It must really be Hell -- you are all saints. You'd probably be better off without them.

You know Spare, I find it interesting that you have taken so many complaints from so many different women and rolled them all into each and every one of our husbands, and then actually gone as far as to take it personally. Hmmm if the shoe fits?

Nahhhh -- just summarizing what I read --
Take it personally? Nope -- just remarking on the uneven playing field. Had men done that kind of hatchet job on women, the police would be here tomorrow!!
Shoe fit?? Probably some of them, absolutely on others - but I got to tell ya -- I don't care, and neither do my women. It's a shame some can't say that.
But then, when you can't refute the message, attack the messenger.

I agree whole heartedly here with you, we men seem to be always wrong, cant do a thing right, wrong if we make a point, wrong if we yell, wrong if we breathe, yet we ware wanted for lifting objects around the home, building homes, laying roads, building automobiles, all heavy work, Ah yes, we are wanted then! No as Spare says, " when you cant refute the message, attack the messenger"

Had to be covert for a while. I was here a few times over the last few weeks, but in disguise. I should be around some more now. Tax season is cranking up, so in a couple of weeks things will get very busy.
I've got lots of posts to catch up on in the mean time.

People who chew with their mouths open and make noises while they are eating. I just can't take it, and have broken up with some really nice girls in my day because they couldn't eat with proper table manners. That's my thing.
