I would need more than that to leave my wife since I would have to pay her off and she'd get half, probably, and that wouldn't leave me as much to get myself where I wanted to go. However, I could pay off all debts, sell my house and build a newer bigger one and enjoy myself.

What to do, what to do? First I would move my grandmother into some real nice care facilty so she didn't have to live with my mom. Give my son's each a nice chunk to set them up in whatever they wanted to do. Get a divorce and let hubby keep everything we own so he can't say I just wanted his money. Then I would get the hell out of Dodge on get on with the life I want to live.

I originally thought I would divorce my wife but I really don't think I would since I would lose half; however, I'd give her an ultimatum. Sex every day or I will find someone else that will take care of me and I would have already put the money into a trust account that she couldn't get at. If she didn't shape up, I would ship her out. I would also like to open a little restaurant.

Sorry to pop the balloons but having just one million dollars does not go that far (at least not in NYC) Investing is great but what if it takes a down turn?
I have found throughout the years as my income increased so did my life style. Human nature being what it is.
When I bought my two Mercedes a 560 SEL and a 190 E 2.316 and a larger home and started donating more to charities like St Jude etc I realized the more one makes the more one spends so it is all relative as my taxes also increased accordingly.
Starting out in a one bed room apartment moving to a home and buying more toys (cars etc) the million doesn't seem so much as it did when I was unemployed and on food stamps for three months when the Democraps had massive lay offs of veterans for affirmative action quotas on any federal funded job site.
During the terrible late 1970's
How does one tell their wife and small children that daddy is unemployed as he was not part of the big picture when it comes to hiring quotas set up by the same government that supposed to protect the vets and citizens.
Being poor, then being "self made" one never seems to feel rich unless you have good health for your children spouse and family members.
Bill Gates could have taken the money and ran but sometimes enough is just not enough as when you start giving money away to the really needy like Children with dreaded diseases or older folks who cannot make ends meet then you feel rich by helping.
I am not talking about the lazy seeking "entitlements" without ever working for a living but the folks who through no fault of their own cant work.
A million dollars can barely buy a home in my area then there are the taxes and fuel to heat it plus every single charity known to man calls you or knocks on your door seeking hand outs plus family members consider you a bottomless pit and you make a lot of enemy's when you expect a "loan" to be paid back
Be very careful what you ask for!!! Look at all the folks who won a lottery and look how the money destroyed their lives and how many went broke.
Giving children money not earned is a sure way to destroy their ambitions look at the Hollywood' crowd.
Setting up a trust fund that states " for every cent the child makes the fund will match penny for penny after the first $30,000" or so
This way the person receiving the money HAS TO WORK as idle hands will find trouble to get into.

Actually, you won't do anything --
If you were given a million dollars, you would pay 35% in federal taxes (it would be considered income), 8% in state taxes (the national average), and 14% in social security taxes. That means that you would actually walk out with $430,000 - hardly enough to do anything substantial.

Be very careful what you ask for!!! Look at all the folks who won a lottery and look how the money destroyed their lives and how many went broke.
Very interesting points here. Ihave read a lot of booking of investing and the wealthy. NYCMasterPlumber makes a good point at saying look how many won the lottery and went broke. In all my research, it is a proven fact that if Spare gave you one million dollars that 90% + of you would squander if away within five years. It is mainly due to how you think of money. Don't we refer to the wealthy as "filthy rich" or "stinking rich"? Or how about "money is the root of evil", which is a misconception. The phrase is actually "for the love of money is the root of evil" Yet in our mind, we seprerate the two. It is negative associations such as these, and how you feel about money that will cuase you to make most of the choices, and whether you have money or not. Let me ask you this: If Spare gave you $20,000 in cash, how many would hide on to it in "fear" of losing it, or it be being stolen? Or simlpy not carry it on your person? Again it is what or how you association things to having many. But as NYCMasterPlumber stated, for most, the more we make, the more our spending increases. Unless you change your associations to money.
Now for me, I would give 10% to my church, 10% to charities, 10% to pay on any debt and the rest I would invest in real estate, stocks, bonds and other investments. PragmaticJenny, while investing in the U.S. Stock Market sounds good, if you had $100,000 to invest, you can or get $100,000 worth of shares. However, if you invest in real estate, it is possible that you can take that same $100,000 put it down (10% down payment) on a 1 million home and borrow more than 100% of the value of the home. This is tax free money that you can put in your pocket! You either rent it out, or sell it. Ahh the most of you say what if you can't get a millon for it? So what, you sell it for $850,000 for example. How much have you invested? Yep! Only $100,000. But you make improvements....carpet, paint, and have it re-appraised. It is then also possible that your one million dollar home is now worth more. Yet PragmaticJenny, you my dear, still only have $100,000 in stocks, hoping you don't lose your money.;)
And one other key point here is, and I seen a thread on this. "Most" wealthy people have two things in common, and I challenge anyone to this fact. One, they have invested in real estate. Two, they have integrity.
So while I stick to my plan, I am also going to follow you all around and get your money that you squander away that Spare gave you. I'll be rich beyond belief!:55 ;)
And PragmaticJenny, I have a hot stock you can buy! It is an in-side-her tip. LOL Opps did I say that?:D
I would definately want to invest some to have a monthly income coming in....
but then I would live my life long dream and

Been there done that already multiple times. I always reinvest windfalls and promptly lose $100K-$200K on high-reward-risk investments before I regain my senses. I firmly believe that you can't keep anything that is given or gained easily. Large sums of money (just like respect) MUST be earned and respected for what it represents in equivalent freedoms or else one soon ends up losing it or squandering it. I tend to focus on attempting to double my net worth every 3-5 years without imposing too much stress or unhealthy fixation on material only objectives. There are a LOT of things worth infinitely more than money - friends, character, reputation and respect for example.
When I have the inevitable and occasional business or financial losses I personally regret not having giving away at least half as much as I have lost to friends or family. Such a waste to lose money in a bad investment to complete strangers - much better to help those you know and like with a contribution (or a loan that you know will likely never be coming back to you).
Originally being from middle-class roots I have a remarkable down-to-earth sense of balance and fear about not wasting money. I focus only on purchasing high quality "value" at the "knee of the cost-benefit curve" on anything I do (e.g. buy high-end discounted real estate, book good-value self-directed vacations/trips, nicer clothes but not too many designer series, nicer higher-end but not overly conspicuous cars [e.g. Porsche super sport utility over a turbo carrera] , fine dining (at the club rather than a private chef etc), top shelf spirits but 88-93% choice vintage "value" wines). I tend to buy my spouse a lot of higher end jewelry since its so durable and goes up in value, but have stopped buying her the designer clothes since they go out of fashion so quickly (Carol Little, and stuff like that is perfectly fine and sufficient). I am fairly generous in the charity department with church, cancer research, etc. but abhor donating to high-overhead organizations making a career out of skimming donations.
I rarely buy things for myself though and only need the basics and only a few toys (car, a second hand "quality" boat, a few good real estate properties, basic clothes and sports gear).

HI O.F.!
Wow, you sound so much like me, as I do basically the same thing as I stated in my post below. Yet after reading and studying many other wealthy people, I had to stop and ponder just what wealth means to me. I came to the conculsion that wealthy for me is being able to throw $100K for example in a deal and if it goes bad, it doesn't effect my lifestyle at all. I too go high-end on the same things, especially in real estate and the similar items you stated. I am a risk taker and work even better under pressure. Yet like you, I try not to hold on to material things to tighly. I try to be more like a conduit and expand the size of it allowing money and such to flow freely through it. I like to give as much as a I get. Last year it was awesome to take a fairly higher end property, rehab it and we gave it away to a well deserving single mother with a couple of kids who was having a rough go at life. I come from the average middle class as well, and I have never gotten any breaks in life like that. What gets me is that I have seen so many selfish people that want, want, want, and never give....the benefit of doubt, their time, or even such as their talents. It is always "what is in it for me?" They wonder why their life is the way it is, and it seems the "more" I give, the "more" I get. After giving away that house last year, we got a return of $250K on a commercial property we sold. So I do highly agree that there are more important things in life than money, like family, friends, your integrity or reputation. I know just what you mean when you say sometime you regret not giving half away of what we lose in business deals. Nice to see someone just like me here with the same financial outlook concepts! :55 It never hurts to have a little magic and luck too!

OF
Pay off all my bills. Set aside money for my kids to get whatever education or training they want and help them get started in life pursuing their dreams. Buy a new reliable car. Sell my house contents included (including all the clutter) and start fresh in a new home some place quiet (beach). Invest it so I can live off the proceeds and not have to worry about working again.

There is a ranch not too far away, up for sale for just under a million, 180 acres and a grazing lease for 3000 more, plus all the cows and bulls stay on the ranch, and most of the equipment. I would buy it, and move there, and have my own ranch for a change. I think most of my in-laws and some close friends would move there too, and help work it with me. That would be a dream come true!
I know some things I could change, would turn that place into a money maker in no time flat.

... be a millionare! :)
Seriously, I would be debt-free for the first time since I was 17 (that's when my first student loan came into play). Would also get my family as debt free as I could while leaving enough left over to invest in a business in 3 years.
Until then, I would take 1 year travelling, followed by 2 years of "community service" somewhere on the planet (probably Africa).
Would then come back refreshed, recharged and ready to tackle a new business start-up.
If the million doesn't happen to come thru, Wifey and I are still planning to do the 2 year global community stint, but we will wait a couple of years longer before starting.

For some of us, that is a much bigger job than for others.

A million dollars really does go that far in todays market. The problem is as you make more money your life style changes accordingly.
You go from a $20,000 car to one costing over $100,000 and instead of a co op apartment you buy a house with 14 rooms and then your back to square one just higher living costs.
One million will not change someones life that drastically as look at all the bankrupt lotto winners.
With a higher salary comes family members asking for non refundable loans friends come out of the wood work that you have not seen in 20 years.
Every single charity on the face of the nation contacts you.
Uncle Sam of course takes his hefty share to pay for the people who just cannot seem to make it on their own and need the wealthy to pay for their hospitalization, subsidize their rent such as section 8 and just because you busted your arse to make your fortune in life doesn't mean the leaches of society do not think they are some how "entitled" to a free ride.
I really cannot see myself being able to totally retire on just one million as the interest would not sustain my life style I am accustomed of living.
As a millionaire we pay our own hospitalization pay our own sick and vacation days and we are given dirty looks when we have family members on welfare and to lazy to get a job and ask why we can just give then a hand out.
I quit school at 16 and went into the Navy for 3 years, went to school at night for 5 years while working for $2.10 per hr I managed to start my own company going out on sewer and heating calls in the middle of the night and now that I am "established" folks see the successful person BUT they do not want to know how someone paid their dues to get there.
I remember when I hit 40 and decided to retire and then after 2 months I said this is not for me so I went back into business and now have fun doing what I love and meeting new people and enjoying working.
If someone should get a million dollars and then quit their job this shows they are in the wrong field as they are doing something they really cant stand.
It is like the slaves working for the city, state and federal governments as all they talk about is "retiring" thus wishing their lives away so they can sit in a bar or watch TV .
The person working for a government is normally owned for 20 years being told what to wear, when to come to work and have this need to be taken care of then say "If I was a millionaire" rather then having faith in themselves and just go out there and make it.
One of my ex employees after learning how to clean sewers and drains after 1 year with me stated his own company and 3 years later he stated his NET was over 2.3 MILLION and when we talked several weeks ago he told me he has no desire to retire he is actually looking to start up another operation as he said its fun playing businessman all with out even having a GED.
By the way the guy came here from another country on a work visa and he is also self made ( Vietnamese) in the 1960's I was fighting this guys father and uncles go figure
Wait until HELLery Clinton gets in then the taxes will really go wild as someone has to pay for entitlements and free housing and opening the boarders and the living wages will drop like a lead balloon as there will be 6 people for every job opening.
One day listen to her and then ask yourself WHERE IS ALL THIS MONEY GOING TO COME FROM?

1. I'd pay off some bills.
2. Vacation.
3. Upgrades to my house.
4. Invest most of it in a low risk long term investment so I could retire at a young age.
I'd keep working while my investment grows...

Unfortunately a million is'nt as much as it used to be for how much it will get you. I guess I'd pay off the bills, put a good education fund away, buy myself one "toy" I always wanted. Maybe some type of car or something. Then put the rest away to hopefully have for retirement.

I'd see that my mom, grandma and uncle were taken care of financially.
I'd make sure that my children had a trust fund set up to take care of college and give them a start for their life.
I'd invest a significant amount for retirement so my children would not have to worry about taking care of us financially.
If there was any left I would donate it to cancer research project I respected.

Deposit the check
Pay all the bills and debts
Sell EVERYTHING
Disappear
Travel the world for several years...including visiting some of you folks...that would probably eat up most of it...even traveling on the cheap...
Then, wherever I end up...kick back to the karmic debt...peace work, relief work, something for a coupla years...

If presented with a million dollar check, I would pass out from the shock.
After taxes, I'd pay a couple bills and put the rest away for a retirement, or a rainy day. (What's the weather going to be like tomorrow?)

Traveling for several YEARS?? are you planning on rowing to each port of call or swimming or possibly ridding a bike?
I have to laugh at what most people think a millon dollars will do to drastically change their lives.
It is not cracked up to be what you may think.
Not if your planning on eating out unless you like peanut butter 24 -7

There are ways to make it happen.
Buy a sailboat......you don't have room for lots of crap and you don't need to eat out. Don't need much gas and go where you want as long as there is a port........

I would buy a house first and formost, then I would invest at least 1/2 of what was left aterwards. Pay a few bills, take care of what needs to be taken care of, then keep on going as if nothing had happened cause a million don't go as far as it used too
