Since living here in UK..Rugby Union is having their play-offs. Anyone else a fan of this? It has lots of action and men in shorts. Some of them are nice looking. Don't mind watching that. :)

I played in college - in the U.S. It's fun to play but I don't get much chance to see it anymore.

I see Rugby more then American football. I like Rugby League better then Rugby Union.
Do they play Rugby anywhere in the USA?

Rugby is pretty much played everywhere, I'd imagine (well, within reason). It's not always televised and it's not the same pro leagues as you get in Europe or SA.

Up here in Canuckistan, in BC, it's pretty common to have some pretty big games played here. We have a couple of big competitions against the USA and there is also a cup game we do up here where we invite other countries to compete. We aren't the most talented lot, but we are okay.

I used to play and I have been thinking about joining a recreational league because it is quite fun to play. As for watching, I usually only watch the world cup on tv and I'll sometimes go out and watch if there are some good teams playing. The Canada vs. US games are usually pretty entertaining. We've also had the English team out here and the Irish team. Needless to say, our bars were crazy when they were out on the town ;)

If its hot bods in motion you want to see....I would rather watch women's beach volleyball myself :) :)

Yes rugby is played in the US and Canada...but not to the extent it is played in England, South Africa and Oz.
Altho I played it at highschool in England , I would rather watch paint dry hehehehe.....but it is better than curling, or that women's team stuff in the swimming pool where they have pegs over their noses and fixed smiles on their faces :D

God this really annoyed me...There is so much HISTORY where rugby is concerned! Hundreds of years in fact!

I am passionate about rugby, I have played it; I have also been brought up with rugby all my life, my dad taking me to many games as a child, and as a result I fell in love with it...my husband plays rugby as does my son... its a magnificent game, with a camaraderie and passion that other such sports can only dream about....with pure and utter masculinity! We don't need pads (though recently they have had to wear shoulders pads because of the damage that inevitably incurs in a scum...) and, unfortunately, by comparison to the Neanderthals of yesteryear they appear like saints, o hum! But it is still an incredible brutal game... you know what, rugby is one of the most highly skilled, elegant sports I know. The word "elegant" might surprise people who don't know the game and see only a bunch of people on a field bashing into each other -- but I can think of no better word. It is fifteen people on one pitch, each with a different role, but organising together into an amazingly well-coordinated and subtle whole!

So my friend if you have the time or inclination I will explain this wonderful complex game to you...:55

I see you have a real passion for rubgy and would love to explain to many nth americans the beauty of it....so lets start small and use Rhumba as our volunteer....as a child I played since birth, just like an american might take a liking of gridiron thru his parents. But what I really noticed about it is a big strong man like rhumba might play it and show all his smaller team mates he lacks balls. So many times you see the big bully kid at school play rugby and show he doesn't have the heart for it. Now the small kid with the big heart can shine. So once we've played a game like this it often scars the weak. They make passing jokes and show knowledge but more so resentment. The brave love the game who have played it...;) God this really annoyed me...There is so much HISTORY where rugby is concerned! Hundreds of years in fact!

Actually Mate you couldnt be more wrong!!
I was the smallest kid in my class and suffered from asthma...I was the last kid picked for the team and was the one they tried to leap upon.Try that for years of humiliation.
I got sick of this stuff ,and took up cross country running which was my way out of that crappy game. Far from being a bully, mate, I cant stand bullies or abusers of any kind as I was also beaten daily by my father..
This big strong guy did it on his own after he left home, and became totally independent. I got cured of my asthma thru age regression under hypnosis...
I love hockey and cant skate...I did become a Class A squash player also. I dont like team sports because of my experiences at school and my independence.I lack balls? Dream on I am afraid of no one.
One never knows what is inside a person's background do we? :)

Nice to know mate that you think brave people play rugby.. :) :)
It never fails to amaze me how rugby supporters call American football players cissies because they wear protective gear.
..It wouldnt bother me to play rugby at my age, and my fitness level, with a rugby team... as far as danger is concerned.....but there is no way that I would put on protective gear and venture onto a field with American football players...I doubt I would survive for 10 mins. :) :)

...lots of rugby supporters do call american sports feminine because nearly all sports you have to wear pads. But I do love lots of sports and am aware how many injuries occur in american football.......you won't find me calling it names

I also watch lots of European soccer....another sport with alot of injuries

and at a guess at your age it would be easier to find a position to hide in if you played the american code of football.....good luck if you think you can get back into rugby:55

btw..I was a big kid when I was a child....I took lots of pleasure in running over the little kids :D

From the looks of Rhumba..he could handle getting back into Rugby or about any sport he set his mind to!! Sounds like he is in shape. :)

Funny.. the class bullies I knew all turned out to be losers...I often wish I could meet them again..As for me, I have zero interest in rugby..and nothing I see scares me about that game. Its unpopularity continues as a spectator sport ...and most people in the world can see why.

Moonstone ...thank you for your comment..I do try to stay in shape...
I don't claim I could play rugby, but I did say I would not have any qualms about risking physical injury on a rugby field ...as I would with American football ...which is way more violent.
I did play soccer as a kid quite a bit...but found the injuries there were mainly to the shins or knees. It is a very popular game the world over...but personally I find the excessive rolling on the ground affecting serious injury to get free kicks or penalties is so mamby pamby... and detracts from the game.I used to be a fan too...but after moving to North America ,
I found American Football and Hockey much more interesting, once I understood the rules.

I do say tho in praise of rugby...their gay leagues have really come into their own since the Aussie star Ian Robert, and the American star Mark Bingham outed themselves. There are now over 1 million sites on gay rugby on Google.
The gay leagues flourish all over the world.
Bingham of course is the hero of Flight 93, and a major rugby tournament is now named after him. :) :)

a translation... if you are interested of course is:

Before the Haka is performed by the team, the Haka leader, normally an All Black of Maori descent, will instigate the Haka and spur on those who are to perform the Haka with the following.

Ringa pakia
Uma tiraha
Turi whatia
Hope whai ake
Waewae takahia kia kino

English Translation:
Slap the hands against the thighs
Puff out the chest
Bend the knees
Let the hip follow
Stamp the feet as hard as you can.

Ka Mate! Ka Mate!
Ka Ora! Ka Ora!
Tenei te ta ngata puhuru huru
Nana nei i tiki mai

Whakawhiti te ra
A upane ka upane!
A upane kaupane whiti te ra!
Hi!!

English Translation:
It is death! It is death!
It is life! It is life!
This is the hairy person
Who caused the sun to shine
Keep abreast! Keep abreast
The rank! Hold fast!
Into the sun that shines!

Kapa o pango haka:

This haka was first performed by the All Blacks versus South Africa on 27 August 2005 at Carisbrook, Dunedin. The All Blacks won 31 - 27. This haka was written by Ngati Porou's Derek Lardelli. This haka will only be performed before special test matches.

Kapa o pango kia whakawhenua au i ahau!
Let me become one with the land
Hi aue, hi!
Ko Aotearoa e ngunguru nei!
This is our land that rumbles
Au, au, aue ha!
And it's my time! It's my moment!
Ko Kapa o Pango e ngunguru nei!
This defines us as the All Blacks
Au, au, aue ha!
It's my time! It's my moment!
I ahaha!
Ka tu te ihiihi
Our dominance
Ka tu te wanawana
Our supremacy will triumph
Ki runga ki te rangi e tu iho nei,
tu iho nei, hi!
And will be placed on high
Ponga ra!
Silver fern!
Kapa o Pango, aue hi!

My son grew up playing American football. He played on a high school team that was ranked number two in the state of Massachusetts. One day the rugby coach asked him if he had any interest in playing and he told the coach that he didn't really know anything about it. He went to a practice and fell in love with it. He was picked to go to an all star team and from there he was invited to try out for the American under nineteen of age rugby team. He made the second team squad which to me was very impressive. He now attends Northeastern University in Boston. This is his second year, and he has been on the varsity squad as a freshman. He loves the sport. There is a love of commraderie between rugby players. They will go beat the shit out of each other for an hour and when all is said and done, they will bring a keg out to the middle of the field and drink together.

I was getting a BIG kick watching Rugby when we had it for free on DishNetwork.

All I can say is this - I would watch Rugby over US / Canada Football ANY DAY! Rugby players make football players look like wimps, and the game has far more excitement.

I need to hunt down the local teams we have here in Minnesota to watch. Local TV just don't have the balls to show it.

When I lived in Australia, I was a huge All Blacks fan.
Loved it when they did the hakka (sp)!

Second fav were the Spring Boks (again, sp)

Neither choice made me very popular w/ my Aussie buddies!

Growing up in Sydney I'm a huge fan of both Rugby League and Rugby Union. When I lived in the UK I was easilt able to keep up with both codes in Australia. Sadly, now that I live in Melbourne the sporting landscape here is dominated by Australian Rules Football, which does nothing for me. Seeing the Aussies beat the All blacks at the MCG last year was amazing. The less said about the last world cup the better. I admire the English for the fact that execute their game plans to perfection but it annoys be so much that they beat Australia by scoring less tries - just kicking goals. grrrr!

I think I would like it, though I must confess that I do not understand it at all. Kind of reminds me of the version of football we used to play on the playground as little kids, everything goes.
