That's awesome Charley -- I've been told by an instructor that I should take up Tae Kwon Do, he liked my built and thought I was flexible for not having been trained. He probably just thought I was cute. :D But I wish I would have taken it up. Sounds like you're travelling well in it, Kudos...

Of course not Dafrenchguy,-One of my instructors always told me" no matter how good you are, sooner or later you will meet someone that is better than you".They have some amazing people out there. No matter how much I know,i'm always learning. And yes, I enjoy Akidio also.I know a few techinques from that system. It's mostly based on redirection.Usind your attackers force against them.Vary cool stuff.

My husband and I started our son in TaeKwonDo at the age of 4. Some of the best money we ever spent! He earned his black belt at 10 (he's 12) and now we've been looking for another art to compliment that. I've been thinking Judo, Hapkido seems a bit dangerous for child his age. Judo seems to be less likely to harm his opponent and in the long run safer for him... Finding a good school is the hard part!

Thats great Annie,I went from Tae Kwon Do to Wing Chun.Tae Kwon Do is great for sport, but points don't mean anything on the street. The kicks are good for keeping your attacker away ,but what about close range.Wing-Chun has some really cool traps and grabs. It was a hard transition for me but made me more comfortable close up to the attacker.Judo Is also a good system. They teach you how to land and throw.Good close range system.

That seems important for a child my son's size. He's very small for his age... which is one of the reasons we wanted him in martial arts in the first place. Judo seems like a good way for him to overcome his fear of a larger opponent... a fear he still carries today. It worries me that that he allows size to intimidate him.

Annie, mine all started with Judo at a very young age and did very well in competitions with older and bigger people!

You know Lena, I think at least one martial art form should be mandatory before sending a young woman off to college! There is no greater time in her life when she will need the confidence and ability to defend herself. I'm so sick of hearing about date rape and muggings on college campuses! I would imagine more than half would be prevented if a young woman had a few years of almost any martial art. Kudos to your parents for being wise enough to give you such a wonderful gift.

Kids are mean to those that are easy pray.My son was bigger than other boys, and always picked on.He's turning 14 next month,6ft 3" ,250lbs and still growing.I been teaching him for 3 yrs now .At a blue belt in my system,he gets me nervus when we spar now.All we can do is tell them to stand up for themselves.Once they prove to the bullys that they won't back down, they usually stop picking,or get an ass wipping,or as I like to say,an attitude adjustment.Judo would be a great new advanture for him and would be a good addition to his Tae Kwon Do.

Thats a great idea Annie,I feel every woman should get some kind of self defence training. It really wouldn't take years of training.A few good techniques is all you really need.Pressure point strikes are perfect.Knowing where to hit is everything. It dosn't have to be pretty to be effective.

Hey, I can revive this thread! I was going to ask if anyone here studies martial arts. Pretty impressive, Charley...that's great. I started about 10 years ago, earned my 3rd dan (black belt) this year in karate. I love it. I continue to train, teach and workout. It really clears my mind, works out my body.

I've studied muay tai, ju-jitsu, and tang soo do mostly. Add to that the groundfighting and mixed martial arts program from the Corps and I like to think I'm pretty well rounded.

That being said, I train at a tang soo do academy currently but not specifically in tang soo do. The teacher there was in the service with me and he just works out with me and a couple other vets on the side. We do a lot of practical application training, stuff that I can use on the job.

It's really a great accomplishment, spending a majority of your life studying different forms of Martial Arts. When I was younger I was into it, but I stopped. Now I regret it, but I completely value the lessons I got out of it…
My cousin has spent about 25 years learning different forms of martial arts, and now he’s studying kick boxing...

It’s an incredible achievement!

good to see other martial artists on this board. I taught American kenpo for years. Been out of it for about a year I damaged my right shoulder. Hope to get back into soon.

hmmmm....Tang soo is hard to find. After the Judo club I was in folded in college, a friend invited me to his club and I liked it. When I graduated and moved I couldn't find a dojang anywhere that taught it. That was a LONG time go though.

I've spent the last six years studying PaKoa (also spelled bagua sometimes) and I seem to have found a home with that.

I studied tae kwon do as a kid and have been dying to get back into it again...I miss the mental and the physical discipline of it. I do have a friend who's into Krav Maga, however, and I may just ask him if there's any room for a newbie. I think once you start training in any martial art you find you have a real appreciation for all of them - at least that's been the case for me.

And Charley's right - it's a crazy world out there ladies, so if you've never learned basic self defense, there's no time like the present! :)
