my son has Aspergers Syndrome ..he is high functioning and just turned 12 ..while Autistic kids can be a handful and dealing with them extremely frustrating ,i wouldnt want to change him ...i know u think that if he didnt have Autism he would be like every normal kid ...but instead of looking at it as a disibility ,look at it as a gift ...some people call these kids Indigo Children ,they believe these sensitive ,bright ,caring ,compassionate kids are our future and thats why so many are being born ..

The big thing Jimmy is demand all the help u can get through your government with grants and through schooling with teachers aides ,proper seats for your child to sit in ...Were lucky in Canada ,we have a ton of support ...our son was diagonsed at age 6 and has flourshied since with a ton of help and support ...getting as much help for your child as early as possible is the key to leading a so called normal life ...

Hoss, you are not hijacking anything. I would rather teach my autistic students than anyone else. They are all so unique....no matter where on the spectrum they are. My class is self-contained, and my students lower functioning, but they touch my heart every day. They love to learn. Yes, they have challenges, but that is what makes them special. One has one of the most loving hearts I have ever known. They are teaching me as much as I am teaching them. My son has two friends on the spectrum. And the ones who cannot express their feelings are teaching me how to communicate in a new way.

Your son may have challenges, but he is a gift...advocate for him...and pm me if you need any advice...or just need some support:wa:

It sure is nice to find some people to talk to about it. My son is actually 2.5 and I guess people are paying much more attention now, because people started noticing things as early as 18 months with him. He does seem to be very high functioning, but it's hard to tell at this age. He has not been specifically diagnosed, but all of the research I see suggests that Asperger's is what he will be diagnosed with. He is very inteligent and knows like 500 words. His favorite thing to do is flip through books and tell you what everything is. Sometimes he will even start tell you what is coming on the next page. But his ability to communicate back and forth, follow simple directions, and answer questions is way behind. Sometimes when you try to get his attention it's like he does not even know you are there. But we are making a lot of progress lately and I am hoping that whatever he has will only be something that he will have to learn to overcome and not something that will limit him in life. Like I am sure a lot of parents have said before, I would not want him to be any other way. He is soooo precious. No words can describe. And when he actually walks up to you and gives you a hug or says wanna snuggle it means sooo much more than it would coming from another kid, cause you know he must really love you, because that is hard for him. I wish you both the best of luck and I will certainly be PM ing both of you when I get to 500 posts.

your son sounds just like mine ...when is was 3 he could name off all 250 pokemon characters ,but couldnt make a sentence ...one thing it look for and work on is eye contact ...
make sure when u talk to him ,he looks u in the eye ...this is a big obstacle for autistic kids ...another thing ..get him a mp3 player and put alot of songs on it ..he will love u for it ..Autistic kids love music and it calms them down ..they dont like the everyday sounds of life ...

the big thing with my son was ...if he didnt want to be involved with events or family functions ,let him be by himself ...never force him or let others force him to fit in or be part of the event ...

its funny how their minds work ...my son cant tell time on a clock or do math well ...but he can do things on the computer that dumbfound me ..and i know alot ....

we never let his Autism limit what he can do ...he went snowboarding with the school for the first time last week ,,and yes we were worried as hell ,but he came back loving it ....

btw ...one of the top founders of Ea Sports which does all the big sports video games has Aspergers ...he was diganosed in his 20's ....and hes a multi millionare ~!~

Most of the kids I have come in contact with who have aspergers are they need structure and they have a hard time forming relationships. This doesnt mean they cant. You will need to look for it and hopefully some of their peers will make an effort to look hard enough to find it. Some kids actually do care enough to look past the surface.
