SGT called me last night...He is going to re enlist in the Army...which is ok by me...I know he is going to finsih off his 20 years so he can get his full retirement...
What does everyone think about the goverment giving soilders bonuses for re enlisting????
I am not going to tell you what they are going to give SGT at least not right now...I have heard of others getting alot more than what he is getting...but let me tell you...I am pretty please with what they are giving him...especially since it is tax free!!!!

I have no problem with it. There is a lack of quality soldiers staying in...if it takes some money to retain the good ones by all means do it, they deserve it. I would have gotten a nice bonus if I had stayed in...
Tell Sgt. to see if they will bump up the amount...negotiate a bit. See if you can get a bit more.

Well, if he enjoys it, then why not? Not many jobs give you a bonus that good for staying on with them, you know?
I would see if they will give you more, never hurts to ask:)

Absolutely! Other industries offer bonuses for sign ons and such... I think it's the least they should do...I agree with AZ Devil too, see if he can negotiate more since it's his career.

Because of the amount of the years he has in and his rank...and his MOS he will not get anymore than what they have offered him for a bonus....
Kissie, I think anyone who is willing to risk their lives to protect our freedom is entitled to whatever bonus they get. That goes for military, police and firefighters alike. People who choose those careers are living heroes in my books. Heck, if I had the power, I'd give SGT ten times what they're giving him! I'd make him the richest man on earth!
But then again, he already is, since he has you. :kk
Take all you can get Kissie.....I don't think our soldiers and their families are paid enough anyway. Take it !!!
i have no issue with them giving incentives to keep their experienced people.

Well, since I got one, I surely can't complain. Course, I used mine to buy a 1970 Chevy Nova SS, 396, positraction, Hurst shifter, and an add-on blower. Probably not the smartest thing I've ever done. But, damnnnnnn, that car could run --
Go for the gusto!

it doesn t mater in the grand total re the bonus ...any bonus is a plus and yes if they are experienced people they sho;d try to keep the ones that perform like any other occupation
staying in the service may not be a bad idea unless you are self employed
the outside world changes in such an unknown moment...sometimes without warning just on someone s whim
it is more protected
that is not to take for granted the dangers that exist though when overseas as that is extreme

Anyone who is willing to re-enlist to defend our freedom deserves not only a bonus but our neverending gratitude.

I have some practical thoughts on this...
First, thank SGT for me for all he is doing. I spent 10 years in the Army and know what he is going through. His (and your) sacrifices are great, and we appreciate it. The only person that sacrifices as much as a soldier, is a military spouse, so thanks to you, too for supporting him.
As for the reenlistment / bonus - The bonus amount (at least, when I was in) varied depending on the type of job you did and the demand for the position. For example, Arabic linguists may get an ENORMOUS bonus due to their shortage in the military, while mechanics don't get one at all, because there's a lot of them. Bonuses aren't merit based. They're MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) based. Basically they assign a certain multiplier to your base pay (1x, 2x, 3x, etc.) and pay you that amount times the number of years you reenlist for. I was a linguist in the military, and the bonuses were fantastic.
I do seem to remember that bonuses are taxed, though.....unless of course he reenlists while he is deployed to a combat zone, in which case he qualifies for all income received while in that zone as tax free...including bonuses...I had friends who reenlisted in helicopters over Bosnia, knowing that it would ensure that their bonuses weren't taxed.
Kudos to you and SGT on a continued military life. It's not an easy one. I know that first hand. :55

Kissie.. don't you worry about it... he deserves it.. those men and women put their lives on the line for the rest of us...

If a person is of value to the military it makes sence for them to try and keep them enlisted. I don't think a person should re-enlist just for the bonus. If you don't like the military life then money will not make it better.
I was in the military and almost all the former military personel (myself included) wished they had done their full 20 to collect retierment as early as 38 years old.
I think they deserve it. Being past military myself I know how much the government put into my training. It is like a good investment for them. I am not sure they give a big enough bonus in my opinion. But anyone man or woman willing to put themself in harms way to protect our country deserves a bonus and much much more.

Kissie , I think what (SGT) is doing is wonderful and couragious , And he deserves any bonus and all kinds that the military can give out and then some because he is putting his life on the line as well and should be reconized for this .
Good luck and may you have all the sucess you have ever dreamed of .
