View Full Version : would you take the pill?
No poll, I can't be arsed!
Ladies do you feel that the responsibility of birth control is totally up to us??? Apparently, men do feel that the responsibility for contraception falls too much on women ... really???
So here begs the question, how many of you men would take the pill? are you keen to take responsibility?
... and would we women trust them to take it??? :sc
Perhaps a little unethical, but how many men are happy to have a vasectomy or indeed have had one? I ask this, as my husband, who is 45, refuses point blank (excuse the pun) to have one... it really pisses me off! :(

Yes I totally agree with that Jenny! It's always left to women, men don't like condoms because it lessens sensitivity, they expect women to go on the pill,IUD whatever. We have to carry the baby for 9 months, endure labour, and they can't even do one thing!! My husband is the same, he will not get a vasectomy, would not even discuss it, just 'NO' end of!!
I would not trust a man to take the pill, rather have the peace of mind by taking it myself!(Sorry for the rant!!)

No less no more than I would expect! :)
My husband had a vasectomy after our 2nd child together. He had 2 kids from his first marriage and really didn't want more. I wanted 6 kids so I was not interested in or agreeable enough at that time in my life to take the pill or use other birth control.
It was up to him.
It affected the quantity of ejaculate but not the quality of his ejaculation.
Whoops...he just walked through the room....he says it's not as forceful as it was before the vasectomy.

Jenny, interesting that you asked this. Hands down, the biggest argument my husband and I have had within the last couple years was on this very topic. He refused to have a vasectomy or to even rationally discuss it. Absolutely not. End of discussion.
For 20 years, I took responsibility for B/C (pill for a while, depo injections for a while, then the patch), but they all had side effects on me, and known health risks. When the patch came under scrutiny in the news a year or two ago, for the increased risk of blood clots, I decided that was it. No more hormonal B/C for me--it's HIS turn to prevent pregnancy. Or at least I thought that was reasonable.
Oh no, just typing this makes me realize I still am pissed off about it. Cuz you wanna know what we ended up doing?? Absolutely nothing!! Just watching the calendar and hoping I don't get pregnant. Yep, pretty stupid, especially considering a quick little snip-snip could take care of everything. :nu

I think its more invasive for a tubal & more expensive. A woman has to go into day surgery and men can have it done in the office.

Well I was very fertile...was not willing to take any more chances of getting knocked up....could not afford anymore kids...and since he was not willing to "man up" just felt that it was my place to do something about it!!!!

Now days a lot of women have it done after they have c-sections or after childbirth. I think its a good idea since they are in there anyway.
I was only 28 when I had my second child and didn't want to close the door in case there was opportunity for me to have more children. But hell...I ended up spayed anyway....total hysterectomy 5 years ago. Now that was the best thing I ever did :55

It is quite painful for women is it not? and often women get complications because of it?

I have had a hysterectomy also....it was a health issue....but I knew at the age I had my tubal...that I wanted no more children...3 was more than enough for me...
I just feel if women are so sure they do not want any more children and there hubbys wont get snip that getting snipped themselves should be the next option...then there is nothing to worry about...I do realize it is abit more costly...but less costly than having another child...and do realize it does take a bit longer to heal...but in the long run...is better than an unwanted child!!!!

At the risk of stating "too much information", it's now a non issue for me as the purpose for the pill has been "surgically addressed". I had no reservations about the process whatsoever, and have a hard time understanding others who do...

So its like you read my mind when you posted this one. I have begged my husband to get one since he is the one all freked out about accidental pregnancy I know how to prevent it and apparently he doesnt trust that and I have taken the pill religiously for years I am done with being the responsible one and he goes on about how its only so effective...blah...blah So i just give up! And as far as me getting it done...not an option Mom's like me cannot be laid up for even one day.

:spbx: I took the pill for 21 years. I am now 36. Best thing I ever did, but I do feel better now that I am off of it. I had cravings on the pill that I didn't have otherwise.
Best option to take if you want to protect yourself from pregnancy. I have had many relationships, am divorced and remarried and thankful I don't have kids of my own. My hubby has four kids. I was frisky during those 21 years (and 6 relationships) and the pill worked well. Once in awhile, there is a situation where you don't have a condom and need one. No need to worry if you are on the pill.

As one of the male flirters here, I would tell any guy to have it done. 20 minutes, one week absentence and 3 month of still practicing safe... then no more worries.

applause to a man with balls.
yes, it is much more serious surgery for woman. a very small percentage of women have actually died from tubal ligation; there are no known cases of men dying from a vasectomy.
when i used to work at the hospital, one of my patients (22 year old girl who had just delivered her 2nd child) died from a slip of the knife during a tubal. i will never forget it. she was transfused with over 200 units of blood trying to save her life. still haunts me i guess.
so for my husband (or anyone else) to tell me to have the surgery instead of him....well, it just doesn't seem very manly of him.
ok, so now everyone knows my husband's biggest weakness (fear of medical procedures) and the source of our biggest conflict in recent years. but i still love him!!

Some thoughts for the girls out there- Tubal ligation is not a garuntee. I actually ill not have it done, because in my family we have four (thats right, FOUR) women who had children AFTER a tubal ligation. My aunt actually had her tubes tied TWICE and got pregnant regardless. My cousin had hers tied, before she ever had children, because of a mental disorder she did not want to pass on. She was planning on adopting. But then she got knocked up!
I refuse to take the pill. The additional hormones fuck me up. I get manic deppressive on the pill, even the low dose ones, makes me beyond unpleasant..........
I am on a non hormonal copper wrapped IUD, works great, some women bleed more on them, but I had a heavy one anyways, I don't notice the difference. I love it. Plus, it lasts up to five years, so yeah.........
After four years of being with my husband, I started (shame on me) to trust him to handle the birth control department. Meaning, I let him roll his own condom on. Then, he "forgot" it, and now I have a son. So no, If there were a pill for men, unless I was personally feeding it to him, I would not trust him to take it.
And, as a side note, after watching me labor for 14 hours, and watching me give birth to our son, my husband agreed that getting his tubes tied would be ok, and in comparison, not so painful. And then I don't have to have a very serious internal surgery.
Shoot, a vasectomy is better then a castration, and when we castrate we don't even sew up the insicion on animals, just toss a squirt of iodine on there and turn em loose, watch for excessive bleeding. Never seen a complication in thousands of cattle, horses, or dogs. You men should be greatful, the chop method, or the rubber band method is indifferent to the type of nuts it removes:)

Wow I wish I had bad labors so my husband would feel that way about getting the clip, but unfortunately i have to figure something out because i made labor look to easy. He just needs to suck it up and get it done! And as for him taking a pill I cant even get him to take tylenol when he has a headache...

It was the opposite in our home. I was so ready to go get it done, knowing that I did not want to add to our number.......but my wife wanted to wait......it took a few years, but soon as she resolved that she was done with pregnancies......I set the appointment. It felt like a nasty kick in the nuts for a few days, but then it was over.
No biggie.
