I agree with you, Avi, that people often get things that they don't deserve or earn. That is why I question the worth of strong religious beliefs when good, honest, deeply religious people have very bad things happen to them...Do they deserve to have people brutally killed in their family? To get in a bad accident? To have their house torn apart by a tornado? That is where my questioning religion comes into play. I don't think anyone deserves these things, regardless of whether they are good or bad people.

As far as karma, I feel it is more of a psychological issue than anything. Bad karma I feel is a result of the negative feelings people carry around with them. Positive people always seem to have good karma so it is about confidence, in my opinion.

Doesn't your very implication of religion indicate that you think it is that way? You seem to think religion is some kind of tote system, where, if you do one good thing, that should cancel one bad thing, and two good things cancel a tornado or an earthquake.

There is no connection between being religious and being immune to disaster. But, religion helps you to deal with disaster better - I suspect the religious person can better accept and cope with the loss of his house in a tornado than can the non-religious. After all, the religious believe it is all part of a grand plan, and good will come from it, no matter how bad it seems today.
