How many female members like shooting guns?

My dad taught my sister and I how to shoot when we were young. I think when I was 12 he took me to gun safety. It was fun shooting targets with Dad. He wanted us to know how to use them so we would be safe and be able to defend ourselves if necessary.

The last time I shot a gun was about 10 years ago...just to show my son I could hit the target.

Hell yes. I have a gun cabinet full of guns. I have been deer hunting several times though I have not killed one yet. I am very glad to have them around when hubby is gone. It makes me feel safer.

He was a single dad when he met this amazing woman at work. He knew he had to marry her when she kicked his ass on firing range! Right now his son is in AIT at Ft Campbell to be an MP. He loves the range too!

Most women can shoot better than man if they are not scared of the gun...Because men try to overpower the gun where women have a naturally soft trigger squeeze....

Yeppers I shoot guns of every shape and size. I'm not the best shot, but I can hold my own at the shooting range. I have a consealed weapon license and I do carry. I work out of town, up and down the interstate it would worry me if I didn't have one.

I'm a rifle girl myself, I used to love a good single shot, but these days I tend to carry a semi-auto handgun, some animals are dangerous if they don't go down with the first shot. I like shooting for target practice, but mostly carry my guns for hinking and riding alone. Never know what kind of animals you may run into, and I'm usually pretty good at avoiding them, but I have had a few mountain lions hunting me before:)

I love hunting, but I usually restrict myself to things I am willing to clean, cook and eat. Or who's hides I can use to make horse tack. But really, mainly rabbits and Jack-rabbits, and birds worth eatin.

I love trackin even more then I love hunting, I have three packs of coyotes in our area I have been tracking, and we have two bobcats and a cougar who drops in twards monsoon season, and after calving. Got a pack of Javalina, and a number of deer. Got a buck with a real nice rack around here, he's amazing and very bold.

You know why there'd be less crime? Because when your momma told you she'd kill you if she ever caught you________(fill in bad crime) you'd really beleive her:)

no, in all seriousness, we deal with juvy dilinquents, and hunting oftern turns them off of crime for a long time. Something different about killing an animal, not so cool. And unless you have acceptance on the inside, not many can handle it.

I do, but not only do I shoot, I also know how to take care of them. My Dad is a Vietnam Vet, and I am his only daughter. He taught me how to shoot, how to take them apart and clean them; he taught me how to do other things. Hunting, tracking, and killing. He taught me how to defend myself, and he taught me to survive even in the worse conditions. There is nothing like having a military Dad. You know more than what you should, and given knowledge that helps you to survive. I know how to stay alert, and watch for things. I am at peak performance under pressure. I was taught to focus and use strategy. To always be prepared for the worse. I have thanked him many times for what he has taught me. He infuriates my mother by what he tells me, but he only does it to protect me. Thanks Dad, you mean the world to me!

I love gals that know how to handle a gun and know what fun it is to shoot!

I taught my girls, and while they liked it okay, I don't think any of them will ever get the "bug" about it like I have.

My mom could shoot, too! I still remember the first time my dad tried to teach me to shoot. He set up some cans, then showed me how to aim, etc, then fired. He took three shots, missed each one. He was obviously kind of irritated, and said "well, you get the idea, anyway". Then turned to mom and asked if she wanted to try. She took the pistol, pointed it downrange, then looked at him, and coyly said "like this, right?". He said yes, and mom looked back at the targets. BANG, BANG, BANG, about a second apart, one can flying each time. Dad grabbed the pistol and said "here son, you want to try?". Poor dad. I guess he remembered too late my grandfather had punched a hole in the basement wall so they had a target range INSIDE THE HOUSE!!! Yeah, mom knew how to shoot.

Yes I do have children,
And no I am not afraid hey will gain acess to them.
They are kept in a room that is locked, the only way to acess the room is to have a key to the dead bolt, and a key to the gun case itself.
All of the rifles, shotguns and pistols have trigger locks on them.

When this house was built, the builder was the original game warden,
He designed the house with his small grand daughter in mind.
He built a locking rifle cabinet wich is now a pantry.
And he built a locking ammunition cabinet.
Anyone who wants acess to the ammunition cabinet, must use a step stool.
The ammo cabinet is at the very top of the pantry, 8 feet above the ground, and is locked with a padlock.

I did put a great deal of thought into storing my firearms with children in the house.

The trick is teaching them respect for the guns. My kids know how to shoot. They also know what can happen if someone gets shot. They know the safe way to handle them. But they also know never to do it without a parent with them. They do not have access to them alone.

My baby is actually getting her first gun for christmas ... a pink .22

When I was at the range regularly I used to hang my used targets on the back of my apartment door - a great way to get rid of a guy when the date's going badly, may I just say. ;) :p

I absolutely love shooting. My husband and I own quiet a few and mercy if he isn't a dead-eye. One of the sexiest poses of him is when he is peering down the end of a rifle getting ready to make a shot.

I'm determined this season to go hunting and at least take a shot at bambi. Until then, I'm doing my best to practice. This week he surprised me by having dinner ready at the property, guns, ammo and a new target. I was able to put 6 in the bulls-eye at 400 yards. (he of course makes them all....MY MAN!)

I've fired guns a few times, but have never really been around them. We've never had them in the house, until our son was old enough to own them and he bought a couple. I've wanted to learn how to handle a gun and become at least somewhat proficient for some time now. I mentioned this to hubby a week or so ago (he was always adamantly against guns) and he said since I'm here alone a lot, he could see my wanting one. Offered to go out and buy me one...WTF??? lol

I'm curious about people's opinions on hunting, though..I'm thinking deer hunting, in particular, since the season is upon us. I couldn't do it, but have no problem with hunting as long as it's not purely for the sport, but you eat what you kill.

But what about bow hunting? Many states mandate a person take a safety course, but there is nothing about proficiency. It bothers me to think of people who are not proficient, with whatever weapon they choose, and wind up merely wounding the animal who then generally suffers before death.

I know the deer populations need to be thinned for many reasons...no problem. But what about granting bow licenses only to those who can demonstrate proficiency? What about granting (rifle) licenses first to those who have completed a proficiency course/test. Your thoughts?

I have shot guns.. you have to when you go through boot camp... and when we (my ex and I) were stationed in San Diego before we got married we would go to the desert and shoot... if we were on a detachment to Fallon, Nevada we would go on shoots... in the desert.. I never shot at anything there..

I had a small handgun for a while... there was a rapist loose in southern Cali and he bought it for me for my own protection.. we had his guns taken from us when we lived downtown San Diego... and returned 6 weeks later...

my gun was stolen my my stepbrother and used in a robbery.. the state of MN wouldn't allow me to purchase another gun for 10 years... my stepbrother filed the numbers off my gun and buried it...

this past summer I went skeet shooting for the first time.. it was fun... I sucked.. I would so do it again....

Hay Red, My dear, why do you want a gun? LOL...act. I have a few dozen firearms myself, it depends on what you want to do with it? If its for fun and range shooting, a pistal is fun, a 22 bull barrael is cheap to shoot and maintain. If its for safety, a good ol 12 gage pump works well, you can skeet shot and its a club if you dont hit the mark in home defence!

Unfortunately, the nearest gun range is 40 miles from me..and I am JUST inside the town limits so I can't set up cans in my yard for target practice.

Last, I take your point re: a a shotgun for home defense (which is what I had in mind)...kind of want something that I can hit the side of a barn with, but at the same time, a handgun might be easier to deal with. Decisions, decisions....

I agree 100% Red! I grew up around guns and used to go target shooting a lot. I'm not much of a hunter because it usually takes about 5 minutes in the woods for me to be more interested in hiking, flowers, trees, and what else is going on in the forest than in shooting little animals. Although I am willing to pit my skills as a marksman against pretty much anybody.

I've nothing at all against hunting. It serves a useful purpose; although as you said, I believe in using what you kill. A head trophy is fine, but at least take and use the meat! Or donate it somewhere it can be! And people should DEFINITELY have to be certified to use a weapon of any kind! Although I think with this country's mindset you'd have an awfully hard time pushing that kind of legisation through. Not to mention enforcing it. We're pretty stupid sometimes about stuff like that. I'll try not to get started on people who can still drive after drunk-driving offenses and why we don't make people take a vision/driving test every year after about age 65.

And yeah, as for the original thread topic, women who know their way around a weapon are a special kind of hot! Right up there with ones driving trucks.

Ok, besides the hunting question I posed...how about recommendations on a handgun for a complete novice?

get a simple smith and Wesson revolver, nothing to mess up or forget in a time of trouble. Pull the trigger and it works.

I have my great-great-granddad's 12 ga that my Dad gave me...guess I could always break that out for effect..LOL. j/k

Thanks for the info, Last and Scoob...

ok problem solved Red....... Get a Judge 50 handgun, shots 50 cal or 4 10 shotgun shells, cant miss. A full size shotgun is very ineffective in a confined space like a home, a handgun on the other hand... two steps back and point.

Red, I've done this piece before. If you want a handgun for self-defense, I'm all for it, but make darn sure before you think about buying one that you would be willing to use it if you had to. Once a gun is drawn, a scenario takes on a whole new character. If your opponent is also armed, you can almost bet at least one of those weapons is now going to be used. And if you hesitate, or don't know what you're doing, you could end up with it taken away and being used against you. Again, just KNOW that you CAN and WILL use it if you have to draw it.

As far as what, I'm a big fan of 22s for target shooting. They're cheap, quiet, and usually very accurate. But if you're shooting somebody big, unless you use a hollow point round and hit them somewhere it will count, you might just make them mad. I'd step up to at least a 38. It's still pretty manageable as far as noise and recoil, but big enough the size of the hole in the barrel is intimidating and it can do more serious damage with a normal round on a less precise hit. By the time you get to a 45, you're talking about a weapon that will most certainly do serious damage to or disable anything you hit with even a "glancing" shot. The problem is the thing will also about deafen you when you fire it and some of the ones I've used kicked hard enough to actually wrench themselves out of a weak hand when fired. I've heard good things about 9 millimeters, but have only used one and didn't like it. It was, however, designed for covert wear and had an extremely short barrel and an action I didn't care for.

Just in general, a longer barrel is more accurate, but will kick more and is harder to hide in a purse. Not to mention a tendency to get stuck in or under things if you're trying to dig it out. I'm unfortunately not near as good with handguns, although I like them more. I'd probably have to be shaking hands with someone to hit them with a barrel under 4". I'm not bad with 4 and up though.

Again, just make sure if you decide to do it that you're comfortable with the idea you may have to seriously injure or even kill somebody with it if you ever pull it out. And then go somewhere and get familiar with it. For "close in" defense like that, you don't have to be a marksman, but you do need to be prepared for what it feels like when you fire it, the feel of it in your hand, how to aim, take it off safety quickly, keep hold of it and not get hit with it when it recoils, etc.

Good luck!

:yks 50 CAL??!?!!?!??

She's not installing DOORS or attacking armored vehicles! She wants personal protection! Now the 410 shell would be good I guess. But DEFINITELY no 50s!!!

We used to have a winchester 97 12 guage pump. Dad always told us to get that out and just cock it first. That SOUND alone would discourage all but the most determined attacker. He then said if it didn't next try pointing at a section of wall we didn't need anymore and setting one off. If they kept coming after that, I think there were still 4 in the chamber.

Yes, legislation and enforcement wouldn't happen, I'm sure. Have to agree with you on the drunk driving and vision/driving tests after a certain age.

So...now I just need more practice shifting...who knew double-clutching was so difficult? Oh, and learn my way around a gun..

Oh well...

Denny and Wisc..tks for the specifics. I don't know if it will happen, but something I"m considering.

Denny, the main reason I've never pushed for having a gun for protection is just as you said, I have to be sure I'm willing to use it and I believe stats show that too many times a gun is taken away from the owner and used on them in one form or other.

A lot to consider and not something to be decided in haste, by any means.

I have never touched a gun or seen one close up....or even far away. All I know is that if a police officer is near me, I will stare at it on the belt. Or MAYBE my gaze is actually looking at something else....hmmm

Hmmmm. Maybe you were too busy "double clutching" to worry about the shifting? :ok You go, girl!!

And don't worry! Both skills are easy enough to learn.

Besides, "powerful/influential" women are hot too, O mighty moderator.......

I think we need to clairfy the difference between "gun" and "weapon, rifle, or pistol."

"This is my rifle" (holds out the M-16),
"This is my gun" (points to his crotch);
"This is for fighting" (holds out the M-16 again),
"This is for fun" (points to his crotch again).

give me a break.... a shotgun pump is a terrible gun for self defense, unless you point the barrel at them, and even then they can grab it easily, and for a woman a hand gun is very hard to hit a target, the hand gun I sudjested that shots shotgun shells, will hit the target every time and can be controlled easily. Is an excellent choice for home personal protection, but be ready to use it if you pull it out.

typically....for self defense...you never want the intruder close enough to Grab the barrel of the shotgun...if he's that close a hand gun would do little good either.. especially loaded with shot..

I love guns. I like shooting at targets. I go deer and turkey hunting and now that I live in the Ozarks on 30 acres of our own I want to get into squirrel hunting too.
I also have a CCW (conceal carry weapon permit) and carry a handgun almost everywhere I go.
I would rather have it and not need it.. then to need it and not have it.http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae138/CrazyMountainLady/girlgun.jpg

Women and guns have so much in common, you can bond with them, you look for that great 8" slide action, it makes you feel good just rubbing on your hip, and they both look good in leather.

I'd like to weigh in on the debate...
Both options have pros and cons in home defense. The main thing is become familiar with your choice, learn gun safety, practice with it, and keep it maintained.

A shotgun is a good choice for folks that do not shoot often and who live in densely populated areas, like an apartment for example. The shot will not likely pass through two walls, and hit your kids, or a nieghbor. It also gives you time to wake up from a dead sleep so a dream or getting startled doesnt result in you shooting somebody tragicly.
The downside is that it is bulky if you are using one with a field barrel.
A good 12 ga, with a deer barrel is effective. Its also the safest weapon if you have kids. Kids are intrigued more by handguns.

A handgun is a good choice IF... you become very proficient with it. You must be a good shot and be able to clear it if it jams etc. If you live in the country it is a good consideration, for faster access. Obviously you can keep it closer to your bed, and you can equip it with night sights.

It just boils down to your individual home situation and proficency.

LOL...yes, I knew I'd like you. ;) I'm sure there's a preferred type of lubricant.

Interesting information above...thanks for the distinctions of choice dependent upon home situation.
