This was my first ever thread after being here about 4 months. I want to say thank you all for taking part in a thread that at the time I thought was going to make trouble but really wanted to see something like that here. Sometimes we butt heads over what day of the week it is but the news thread went 1701 posts without an argument. Lets hope this one goes just as well and i'm sure it will.

Runaway circus kangaroo on the loose in Ireland
DUBLIN (Reuters) - A kangaroo is roaming the green hills of Ireland after escaping a circus near the picturesque port of Kinsale.
"This kangaroo broke loose just before the show while they were bringing him from the cages to the arena. He decided to take a walk," said local farmer John Walsh on whose land the 2-year-old male, named Sydney, made his break for freedom.
Circus staff launched a fruitless four-hour search following the escape Sunday.
There had since been one unconfirmed sighting of the animal, renamed "Hoppy" by locals and described as two and a half to three feet tall and dark in color.
"He would be happy out there and he'll have plenty of grass, plenty of water and plenty of sunshine," Walsh told Reuters on Wednesday as Ireland basked in near record temperatures more typical of Sydney's native Australia than Ireland's temperate maritime climate.

'JACKASS' SUED BY A REAL JACK ASS
Posted: Wednesday, July 12, 2006
A Montana man has sued media giant Viacom, saying the MTV show "Jackass" plagiarized his name, infringed on the trademark and copyright o his name and defamed his good character.
The plaintiff's name is Jack Ass. That's right, that is now his legal name. He changed his name from Bob Craft to Jack Ass in 1997, he says, in order to raise awareness about the dangers of drunken driving.
"Jackass," which premiered on MTV in 2000, features a group of guys performing ludicrous and sometimes dangerous stunts. It was made into a movie in 2002.
In the suit against Viacom, which owns MTV, Jack Ass claims the conglomerate "is liable for injury to my reputation that I have built and defamation of my character which I have worked so hard to create."
This Jack Ass, not to be confused with the TV version, says he changed his name after his brother and a friend were killed in a single-vehicle car accident several years ago. He now works to promote responsible choices and designated-driver programs.
He claims that "Jackass" committed "trademark and copyright infringement on my legal name" and on a cartoon character, called Andi Ass, that he created to help spread his message.
He's seeking at least $10 million in damages.

Anti porn mayor caught porn surfing
CLEARFIELD, UT – Dan Phelps, former Mayor of Clearfield, UT, has some strong feelings about pornography.
“It’s terrible, it’s a plague, it’s worse than a drug habit, worse than an alcohol habit,” Phelps told The Standard Examiner, an Ogden-based newspaper. “No one is immune to it.”
Phelps’ words sound no different than those uttered by any number of other politicians or government officials and certainly come as no surprise from a politician in Utah. What might come as a surprise, though, is the context in which he spoke them.
Phelps resigned as Mayor Clearfield in February, only a matter of weeks into his tenure as mayor, for what he vaguely described at the time as “personal reasons.” As it turns out, those “personal reasons” boiled down to using a city-owned computer to peruse online porn.
After receiving an anonymous tip regarding the true reason for Phelps’ sudden resignation in February, the Standard Examiner filed a government records request for any documentation from Phelps’ city-issued laptop computer “showing any inappropriate use for the purpose of viewing pornography.”
The city then supplied the newspaper with a disk containing 8,292 files downloaded between January 18th and February 11th of this year, “many of which included images and videos from pornographic websites,” according to the Standard Examiner.
In a recent interview, Phelps told the Standard Examiner that his “indiscretions” took place over a period of approximately two hours, spread across three days. According to Phelps, his surfing sessions broke down to 15 minutes the first day, 20 the next and about 90 minutes the final time he surfed porn from his city laptop.
Phelps claims that the problem started when a pop-up console “appeared” on his city laptop out of the blue. Phelps contends that the pop-up only appeared because the city’s
Internet filters “were down that week.”
“If the filters had been in place, this wouldn’t have happened,” complained Phelps, adding “I’m not justifying what happened.”
According to the Standard Examiner, an analysis conducted by the newspaper’s IT Department found no evidence of a virus, spyware, or other malfunction that would have resulted in files being automatically downloaded to the computer.
The information on the disk supplied by the city shows that the sites Phelps visited included “names with sexual references like ‘sluttyschoolgirls,’ ‘coedscash’ and ‘castingcouch,’” according to the Standard Examiner.
Phelps claims that he brought his inappropriate surfing to the attention of other officials voluntarily, detailing his actions to the city’s Information Systems Manager, the acting City Manager and the City Attorney.
There were more confessions and discussions of the situation over a period of about 10 days before his resignation, according to Phelps, who says he is surprised by how it all worked out, saying that he would think that “someone who came forward and admitted they made a mistake” wouldn’t be punished so severely.
Phelps also said he was unaware of the city’s policy regarding the use of city computers, and said he doesn’t remember signing any kind of form or contract acknowledging a policy about such computer use, and said the city needs to be clearer about its policy on computer use by elected officials.
In addition to resigning as Mayor, Phelps has also resigned as an instructor for the Church of Latter Day Saints where he had been teaching for approximately 10 years. Phelps told the Standard Examiner that, after viewing the porn sites, he knew he couldn’t teach youth about the “evils of pornography” any longer

Slain preacher's wife fleeced in scam, lawyer says
'They were always living on the edge of their budget,' lawyer says
Wednesday, July 19, 2006; Posted: 2:22 p.m. EDT (18:22 GMT)
Mary Carol Winkler is accused of killing her husband, Matthew, in their home in Selmer, Tennessee
SELMER, Tennessee (AP) -- A woman accused of shooting her preacher husband to death after they argued over money may have been taken in by a remarkably common scam that strained their finances and their marriage.
Mary Winkler, who is charged with murder, had gotten tangled up along with her husband in a swindle known as an advance-fee fraud, or the "Nigerian scam."
Scam victims are told that riches are waiting for them if they send in money to cover the processing expenses, Winkler's lawyers say.
"They were always kind of living on the edge of their budget," defense attorney Steve Farese said, "so I'm sure this would have just wrecked their budget."
No one has said how much money the Winklers may have lost, or what role the financial strain might have played in the slaying of Matthew Winkler, the popular minister at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in this small town 80 miles east of Memphis.
Shot in bed
He was shot in the back with a 12-gauge shotgun as he lay in bed on March 22 and was found dead that evening by church members.
After the shooting, Mary Winkler loaded her three young daughters into the family van and went to the Gulf Coast for what she described as a final beach vacation. She was arrested March 23 in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Investigators said last month that Winkler confessed to shooting her husband after a night of arguing about money. She has pleaded not guilty.
"I had gotten a call from the bank and we were having trouble, mostly my fault, bad bookkeeping. He was upset with me about that," Mary Winkler told police, according to a statement read at her bail hearing.
"He had really been on me lately, criticizing me for things -- the way I walk, what I eat, everything. It was just building up to a point. I was tired of it. I guess I got to a point and snapped."
Advance-fee scams became associated with Nigeria in the 1980s when government corruption and a failing economy left many well-educated, English-speaking Nigerians unemployed. "But we see it from all over the world," said John Kane, research manager for the National White Collar Crime Center.
'Everybody wants to believe'
"If somebody tells you you've won something and they want even a nickel before you actually have the money in your hand, they're crooks. It's as simple as that," said Steve Baker, Midwest regional director of the Federal Trade Commission.
"The trouble with all these sweepstakes things, though, is everybody wants to believe," he said. "You want to believe you've won."
In some versions of the scam, con artists send their victims checks for what they are told are partial winnings. The victims deposit the checks in their accounts, then draw on them to pay the thousands of dollars in "processing fees" that the con artists request.
"Everything is just fine, but then four or five days later, your bank calls and says that check you deposited was bogus," Kane said.
In Mary Winkler's case, she deposited several checks from Canada and Nigeria for a total of $17,500, authorities said.
"All I know is they entered sweepstakes," Farese said. "They got these checks in the mail, and they made calls to activate them."
Mary Winkler is in jail, unable to raise $750,000 bail. Her trial is set for October 30.

Drunk man falls 30 metres while trying to relieve himself, is still holding his beer when rescued. If you think he might be Australian -- good on ya, mate30 metres is about 99 foot
An Australian man is recovering from a close brush with death after surviving a fall of nearly 30 metres into a ravine in East Vancouver on Tuesday.
The man, who had been drinking, climbed up onto a railing over the ravine near the Commercial Drive SkyTrain station, apparently looking for somewhere to relieve himself.
'He held on to it pretty tight, I'm thinking.'
-Fire department Capt. Rick Matsen"I guess he was really drunk," said one witness. "He tried to grab on to the tree there, to climb down, and he fell all the way to the bottom."
Emergency officials say the man broke at least one bone, but will be OK, as branches slowed his fall.
Vancouver fire department Capt. Rick Matsen says it was obvious the man had been drinking until just moments before his fall.
"Well, it just so happens he had a beer with him when he was brought up," he said.
"Still in his hands?" asked a reporter.
"Still in his hands, yup. He held on to it pretty tight, I'm thinking," said Matsen.

From liberal to conservative as we get older is the natural order of transition. As the average age of the US increases, we become more and more conservative.
Liberal ideals are based in the idealistic thought that they know what is best for everybody, and we should implement those ideals whether they wanted them or not -- remember how convinced you were during college that you could fix all the problems of the world? You just wanted to use the wealth of the rich to fix them. Sure, you were taking more from one than another, but clearly, the greater good would be served -- why can't those old fogies understand that??
Then, as you got older, you got some of those assets -- worked your ass off for them -- and began to see that the world isn't as black and white as you once thought it was. All of a sudden, the Democrats and liberals wanted to take YOUR wealth to fix the problems.
Funny how your perspective changes.

Sharing bed with women makes men dull
Vijay Dutt
London, July 21, 2006
If you are a man and are not feeling very bright today, blame your wife or partner.
According to a new study, sharing a bed with a partner temporarily confuses men's brains and reduces their ability to think clearly.
Of course, women who share their bed don’t have that problem. In fact, they fare much better because they sleep more deeply.
Research at the University of Vienna, led by Professor Gerhard Kloesch, said men, who spend the night with a bed mate, have disturbed sleep, whether they make love or not. This impairs their mental ability the next day and increases their stress hormone levels, the scientists reported in New Scientist magazine.
In their study of eight unmarried, childless couples in their 20s, the scientists discovered that sharing the bed reduced men’s ability to perform simple cognitive tests. Comparatively, women were fresher than men even when both slept the same number of hours. They concluded that women sleep more deeply. Turning, tossing and snoring and hogging the duvet were cited as indicators of disturbed sleep.
The study also found that both sexes were equally to blame for keeping each other awake.
Professor Dr Neil Stanley, a sleep expert at the University of Surrey said, “It’s not surprising that people are disturbed by sleeping together. Historically, we have never been meant to sleep in the same bed. It’s a bizarre thing to do.” He also agreed with the Austrian scientists that women are pre-programmed to cope better with broken sleep: “A lot of life events that women have disturb sleep — bringing up children, the menopause and even the menstrual cycle.” “Sleep is the most selfish thing you can do and it’s vital for good physical and mental health. Sharing the bed space with someone who is making noises is not sensible. If you are happy sleeping together that’s great, but if not there is no shame in separate beds,” Stanley said.
The moral of the story: If a man has an important day ahead of him, it’s best that he sleeps in the spare room.

Flaming Dog Meat Bribe Sets School Ablaze
Reuters
BEIJING (July 21) - A Chinese headmaster, who tried to buy off colleagues by cooking dog meat for them after secretly selling off trees around the school, ended up setting fire to classrooms when the meal burst into flames, a Chinese newspaper said Friday.
Ten classrooms containing televisions, computers, printers and textbooks burned down, leaving nearly 100 children unable to go to school, the Beijing Youth Daily said.
The headmaster, in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, sold off a 1,000-tree arboretum surrounding the school on the sly, the newspaper said.
"In order to get the teachers not to tell anyone what he had done, on the afternoon of May 16, headmaster Meng got friends to obtain two dogs, which they proceeded to kill on the school grounds," the report said.
"He then told the teachers they would have dog meat to eat that afternoon," it added.
But the plan went awry when the dog being cooked burst into flames and set fire to the school's main office and then the classrooms.
The local education bureau fined the headmaster 10,000 yuan, or $1,252, and suggested he be fired, the newspaper said.

Homeless Man Finds $21,000 in Bonds
AP
DETROIT (July 22) - A homeless man searching for returnable bottles in a trash bin found 31 U.S. savings bonds worth nearly $21,000 in a bag of clothes.
Charles Moore, 59, took the bonds to a 24-hour walk-in homeless shelter, where a staffer tracked down the family of the man whose name was on the bonds.
"They belong to him," Moore told The Detroit News. "I did the right thing."
Ernest Lehto's family had given away many of his clothes shortly after his death in 2004.

Suburban mayor hit with child porn charges
By Barbara Bell
Special to the Tribune
Published July 24, 2006, 8:31 PM CDT
The mayor of Green Oaks was charged Monday with distributing child pornography over the Internet after authorities executed a search warrant at his house, officials said.
Bail was set at $100,000 for Tom Adams, 68, of the 800 block of Anderson Drive, after he was arrested Monday morning, authorities said. He was in Lake County Jail Monday evening.
Adams, a former chairman of the Lake County Republican Party and a longtime GOP power broker, is accused of using three screen names on America Online to send child porn from a computer in his home office, said Assistant State's Atty. Patricia Fix. The first incident occurred March 21, 2005, she said. On July 12, 2005, an undercover police officer in Florida received five e-mails from Adams that contained multiple images of child porn, according to Fix.
On May 25, Adams sent child porn images to three people, and he sent one image on June 2, Fix said. The FBI contacted the state's attorney in May, she said.
When authorities went to Adams' house Monday morning, they found child porn on his computer, Fix said. Adams told investigators that he sent the images and that he is addicted to child porn, Fix said.
If convicted, Adams could get 15 years in prison consecutively for each person who received child porn from him, Fix said.
"These are very unfortunate and serious charges," said Adams' attorney, Tom Briscoe of Waukegan. "We'll have an answer for them at the appropriate time."

HOUSTON, July 26 -- With her first conviction for murder thrown out, a jury in the second trial of Andrea Yates on Wednesday found her not guilty by reason of insanity in the drownings of her five children in her bathtub five years ago.
Yates had said that Satan had told her she was a bad mother, and she had told authorities she killed her children so they could go to heaven. Now 42, she will be sent to a state mental hospital until experts deem her no longer a threat to anyone.

TEHRAN (AFP)- Iran has banned the best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code" after receiving a protest letter from Christians, Iranian newspapers have reported.
"After receiving the letter of protest from religious Christians, the culture ministry decided to cancel the authority given for publication of this book," Mohammad Reza Vasfi, a ministry official, told the daily Etemad Wednesday.
According to the newspaper, some 30,000 copies of the book have already been distributed in the country and the book was in its eighth edition before the decision to ban it.
The controversial book by author Dan Brown, which has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, supports the thesis according to which Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were married and had a child whose descendants are alive today -- a claim which the book says the Church has tried to smother for two millennia.
The Catholic Church has harshly denounced the book which has been boycotted by certain religious groups.
Iranians, however, can still buy videos or DVDs of the film version on the black market, the usual way in which Western films circulate in the country.

Wow...going to step lightly here, but I have to put in my two cents...
It is of my personal belief that the "church" is a vehicle for me (personally) to get closer to God. It is not the "church"'s responsibility to make it about God, but rather take the values and perspectives of the specific religious organization's beliefs, and extend it to its members. Reminding us of what is important in our lives, and helping us seek a moral high ground.
As a Catholic, I've spent the past few years ridiculed and defending my beliefs because of some negative press. Most of the Church's problems have been well documented and left to the media and late night talk show hosts to make their jokes at the expense of Catholics, the God we stand behind, and the Church which provides us guidance. I am a little tired of it.
I have read the "Da Vinci Code"...matter of fact, I've read every one of Dan Brown's books. All of his books are incredibly fast reads, with good plot lines, excellent character development, and fantastic endings. I read the books as they were meant...a fictional novel. However, Dan Brown uses facts mixed with fiction to develop these stories. Sometimes the differences are not detectable and you can read something as fact, when in fact it is fiction. The story itself is based around the Catholic Church, and negates many of the beliefs the Church is based around. So I ask you...how is the Church supposed to respond? They can't ignore it, because the factual nature of the book allows for too much interpretation by the reader. They can't say this part of the book is factual, but this part is not; because the lines are too grey. Their only choice, and I mean only choice, was to ban the book from a religious perspective. For any non-Catholics, this does not mean we will be ex-communicated or kicked out of the church for reading the book...it strictly means the Church does not support the book, and asks for it's member to use caution when reading it.
I'll get off my soapbox now.

ok bar, i've stated this before, i to am cathlic, i know i didn't spell that right, sorry, but diff, from you, the american verision, and the italian are so diff, its not even funny. what i was referring to hon, was the fact that to me, their getting away from the bible, and expressing more of their beliefs. as far as the book goes, its like you said hon, its fiction, they could have released a statement saying that, not ban it. i don'tr know if you know, several years ago, they found papers , i can't think of what the papers are caled now, but in them, they say this hon,
jesus said your church is where you believe and pray, and give your offerings, and it doesn't have to be in church, it could be your house, your backyard, anywhere you practivce, the church and POPE, both denounced theses papers. because it stated you could believe and practice where you want, it doesn't have to be in church. thats what got me bar, these papers were proven to be real, but because the pope didn't like what they said, he and the church banned them. thats not right. they shouldn't ban things, just say i don't support this. ok off my soap box now

BARKISS: I am glad that you said something. I am a Catholic in a country which no longer believes in God at all, where probably most people will say that they are ATHEISTS, Catholics, Jews, Protestants and even some Moslems.
The Catholic Church here is either in a state of increased decay and loss of its parishers or goes to the extremes.
Don't we live in the extremes now in matters of beliefs? I belief so.
Sandy is correct when she says that the Italian Catholic Church has practically no correlation with its American counterpart. I have seen the Spanish and Mexican Catholic Churches and that, My Friends, is another World. Both are very close to Opus Dei, a fanatical wing of the Church, something that one finds in Dan Brown's book.
I am glad that you put your two cents worth, BARKISS. I like you for the thinking man that you are.

Well done. Thank you. Religion may be the one thing I won't argue about, but as an actively practicing Catholic, I found the Da Vinci Code as an amusing, but irrelavant, read. As for the church banning "everything", maybe we could use a little more banning around here. Maybe a little "banning" would stop the moral decay of our youth. Maybe a little "banning" would give guidance and direction to lost adults. Maybe ..... just maybe.

Do they say you two can't get married or just that you can't get remarried in a Catholic church? I assume that divorce is considered a no no, is it considered a sin to the Catholic church? I can completely understand your feelings. Please remember those "rules" were implemented to discourage divorce and increase family values. The Church also established the abilitiy to annul the marriage to counter their no divorce stance. Have you spoke with your Priest regarding an annullment? My understanding is that is a fairly easy process...just some paperwork.

We spoke to a Deacon who told us that it requires back ground and that they needed to communicate with my ex regarding the end of our marriage. My ex is an abuser and I had lost contact with him. They also mentioned that it would cost over $500.00 and if we were able to pay, we would of course be expected to. Without the annulment, no marriage between my current husband and me exists in the eyes of the catholic church and no marriage can take place.

ANNIE....I have been married twice. The first time was under the rules of the Swiss catholic Church with a complete wedding. I divorced. When I decided to remarry, both my future wife and were divorced.
The Spanish Catholic Church told us we could not be wed in church unless we would get an annulment of our weddings. I could not go with that idea as it meant renouncing also the moral exsitance of my children, her children, and our past lives with our spouses. We asked and received a benediction under Spanish Church rules. We married under the Mexican Church rules.
We had to pay a pretty price in Mexico. I wonder whose pocket the money went into..
And now I am happily divorced under European law.

They are all individual, you can't lump churches all together. How its run depends on who is in charge. Our Lutheran church preaches the law and the gospel...the good news, the celebration of being christian the love christ has for each and every one of us.
I don't believe that church attendance gets you into heaven. Its whether or not you sincerely ask for forgiveness and whether or not you believe. You can be a good christian and never go to church. I go for me, it makes me feel good about myself.
Each religion is so different yet so alike .... we all believe in something and I do think in the end Heaven will be 1 place....not many different places. We will all be there together, no matter the religion.

Ya, thats one of the things I don't agree with about the Catholic Church. I think the priests should be able to marry. Divorce is better than staying in a dangerous marriage. I have a friend who is Catholic, they would not let her marry her 2nd husband in the church, but they sure will let her be a member and they take her tithe with no problems.

I thought that I would post this for informational purposes...
Dear Senator Frist:
There is a huge amount of propaganda and myths circulating about illegal aliens, particularly illegal Mexican, Salvadorian, Guatemalan and Honduran aliens.
1. Illegal aliens generally do NOT want U.S. citizenship. Americans are
very vain thinking that everybody in the world wants to be a U.S. citizen. Mexicans, and other nationalities want to remain citizens of their home countries while obtaining the benefits offered by the United States such as employment, medical care, in-state tuition, government subsidized housing and free education for their offspring. Their main attraction is employment and their loyalty usually remains at home. They want benefits earned and subsidized by middle class Americans. What illegal aliens want are benefits of American residence without paying the price.
2. There are no jobs that Americans won't do. Illegal aliens are doing jobs that Americans can't take and still support their families. Illegal aliens
take low wage jobs, live dozens in a single residence home, share expenses and send money to their home country. There are no jobs that Americans won't do for a decent wage.
3. Every person who illegally entered this nation left a home. They are NOT homeless and they are NOT Americans. Some left jobs in their home countries. They come to send money to their real home as evidenced by the more than 20 billion dollars sent out of the country each year by illegal aliens. These illegal aliens knowingly and willfully entered this nation in violation of the law and therefore assumed the risk of detection and deportation. Those who brought their alien children assumed the responsibility and risk on behalf of their children.
4. Illegal aliens are NOT critical to the economy. Illegal aliens
constitute less than 5% of the workforce. However, they reduce wages and benefits for lawful U.S. residents.
5. This is NOT an immigrant nation. There are 280 million native born
Americans. While it is true that this nation was settled and founded by
immigrants (legal immigrants), it is also true that there is not a nation
on this planet that was not settled by immigrants at one time or another.
6. The United States is welcoming to legal immigrants. Illegal aliens are
not immigrants by definition. The U.S. accepts more lawful immigrants every year than the rest of the world combined.
7. There is no such thing as the "Hispanic vote". Hispanics are white,
brown, black and every shade in between. Hispanics are Republicans,
Democrats, Anarchists, Communists, Marxists and Independents. The so-called "Hispanic vote" is a myth. Pandering to illegal aliens to get the Hispanic vote is a dead end.
8. Mexico is NOT a friend of the United States. Since 1848 Mexicans have resented the United States. During World War I Mexico allowed German Spies to operate freely in Mexico to spy on the U.S. During World War II Mexico allowed the Axis powers to spy on the U.S. from Mexico. During the Cold War Mexico allowed spies hostile to the U.S. to operate freely. The attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 was cheered and applauded all across Mexico. Today Mexican school children are taught that the U.S. stole California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. If you don't believe it, check out some Mexican textbooks written for their schoolchildren.
9. Although some illegal aliens enter this country for a better life, there
are 6 billion people on this planet. At least 1 billion of those live on
less than one dollar a day. If wanting a better life is a valid excuse to
break the law and sneak into America, then let's allow those one billion to come to America and we'll turn the USA into a Third World nation overnight. Besides, there are 280 million native born Americans who want a better life. I'll bet Bill Gates and Donald Trump want a better life. When will the USA lifeboat be full? Since when is wanting a better life a good reason to trash another nation?
10. There is a labor shortage in this country. This is a lie. There are
hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of American housewives, senior
citizens, students, unemployed and underemployed who would gladly take jobs--at a decent wage.
11. It is racist to want secure borders. What is racist about wanting
secure borders and a secure America? What is racist about not wanting
people to sneak into America and steal benefits we have set aside for legal
aliens, senior citizens, children and other legal residents? What is it
about race that entitles people to violate our laws, steal identities, and
take the American Dream without paying the price?
For about four decades American politicians have refused to secure our
borders and look after the welfare of middle class Americans. These
politicians have been of both parties. A huge debt to American society has
resulted. This debt will be satisfied and the interest will be high. There
has already been riots in the streets by illegal aliens and their supporters. There will be more. You, as a politician, have a choice to offend the illegal aliens who have stolen into this country and demanded the rights afforded to U.S. citizens or to offend those of us who are stakeholders in this country. The interest will be steep either way. There will be civil unrest. There will be a reckoning. Do you have the courage to do what is right for America? Or, will you bow to the wants and needs of those who don't even have the right to remain here?
There will be a reckoning. It will come in November of this year, again in 2008 and yet again in 2010.
We will not allow America to be stolen by third world agitators and thieves.

April Fool's joke sparks strip poker championship
Fri Jul 28, 10:12 AM ET
DUBLIN (Reuters) - It started as an April Fool's joke but an Irish bookmaker's proposal to hold the world's biggest strip poker contest will become reality next month.
Paddy Power floated the idea as a joke but it generated so much interest -- and hundreds of requests to take part -- that the Dublin-based company decided to organize a contest.
So next month, 200 poker buffs will risk baring all in an attempt to become the first World Strip Poker Champion -- and earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
The winner will also receive a "Golden Fig Leaf" trophy plus 10,000 pounds ($18,630) in cash.
"This will be the most fun you can have with your clothes on -- or off!" Paddy Power said in a statement for the tournament, which will be held in London on August 19.

CEO's grossly overpaid!
European CEOs make half the pay
Consider:
The average pay for the top executive at the 200 largest U.S. companies last year was $11.3 million, according to Pearl Meyer & Partners, the compensation division of Clark Consulting. That's more than 2.5 times the average $4.3 million earned by the top executive at 100 companies in the London Stock Exchange's FTSE 100 Index ($GB:UKX), according to Independent Remuneration Solutions, a British compensation consultant.
It's the same story at midsized companies. Bosses at U.S. businesses with annual sales of about $500 million earned $2.16 million last year. CEOs at similar-size companies in the UK, France and Germany earned $1.2 million, about half as much, according to Towers Perrin, another compensation consulting firm. In Japan, the typical CEO at this size company made $543,000.
You see even more striking contrasts when you examine individual companies in the same sector.
Deutsche Telekom (DT, news, msgs) Chairman and Chief Executive Kai-Uwe Ricke got $3.3 million in salary and bonus last year, and he accrued $400,000 in incentive pay. His counterpart at AT&T (T, news, msgs), Edward Whitacre, had a pay package worth more than $38 million. That included $9.2 million in salary and bonus, $4.7 million in long-term incentive payouts and $24.8 million worth of long-term incentive grants.
Ricke got paid one-tenth as much as Whitacre even though Ricke manages a bigger company; Deutsche Telekom has annual revenue of around $75 billion, while AT&T's is $50 billion.
U.K.-based GlaxoSmithKline (GSK, news, msgs) paid CEO Jean-Pierre Garnier in salary and bonus of $6.4 million in 2005, using exchange rates from last week to convert his salary to dollars from pounds. When you add in "other" pay and options, his total pay package was worth around $9.4 million, according to Hemscott Group, a UK-based company that tracks European pay levels.
In contrast, Henry McKinnell, chairman and CEO of Pfizer (PFE, news, msgs), had a pay package worth more than $17 million last year. He got a salary and bonus worth $6 million. He realized options gains worth $6.2 million and received long-term incentive payouts of $5.5 million. The two companies are similar in size: GlaxoSmithKline had annual sales of $41 billion last year while Pfizer's was $51 billion.

Raul is his "step-and-fetch-it" relation. During the rebellion, as Fidel captured an area, he would turn it over to Raul to manage -- he couldn't trust him with running an army unit. And, now, he's running the country -- for about three days.
I understand your teacher's reaction -- when Castro threw out Batista, he seized all the western holdings, and distributed them to the poor people. They loved him for it -- unfortunately, he never moved the country forward, and it is a complete island of poor and misfortunate (unless you believe the "rumor" that Fidel has - the last i heard -- about 1.4 billion stashed away in Switzerland, the Caymans, and Libya). So, he is clearly a folk hero -- and a piss poor leader.

NEW DELHI - In an effort to keep monkeys out of the New Delhi subways, authorities have called in one of the few animals known to scare the creatures — a fierce-looking primate called the langur, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported Wednesday.
The decision to hire a langurwallah — a man who trains and controls the langurs — came after a monkey got into a metro car in June, the newspaper reported.

Muslim fun park day flop
A MUSLIMS-only day at Britain’s biggest theme park has been axed after a huge bookings flop.
Organisers Islamic Leisure had hoped to attract 28,000 people to the event at Alton Towers, Staffs, on September 17 — but less than 1,000 tickets were sold.
The fun day — exclusively revealed by The Sun — caused a race row after plans to ban mixed-sex rides, smoking, alcohol and gambling.
Non-Muslims were angered by the plans.
An Alton Towers spokesman said last night: “At least the park will be open to the general public.”

We have what is popularly called the "make my day" law --- it is legal to shoot an intruder into your house "if you reasonably believe there is a threat to your person or property". So, if the intruder breaks in and sits on your couch .... no. But, if he threatens you or attempts to steal or damage your property..... yes.
It isn't used very much ---- I only know of 3-4 cases over the last 5 years in my area. But, it might mean something that our break-ins have gone down about 40% over the same period. Apparently, criminals are less inclined to be criminals if there is a chance they might get shot.

Surgeons find knife, nails in stomach
BELGRADE, Serbia - A team of surgeons in western Serbia earlier this week took out eight nails, a knife, a pen, a screw, a spoon, a clothes-peg and other, smaller objects, from a young man's stomach, one of the doctors said Wednesday.
"We were astonished," said Dr. Maja Gulan, who helped perform the operation Monday in Uzice, 70 miles southwest of Belgrade.
"We have seen people swallow various things, but never this many," she added.
The identity of the patient has not been revealed. The doctors said he had suffered no major damage to his internal organs, and was successfully recovering.
The case was initially reported by a concerned relative who saw him swallowing the objects, doctors said..

My Comrade in Arms,
I would first like to draw your attention to the fact that each day when I get on the Internet, and before seeing some of the SMILING faces of the Ladies on MNF, I find myself face to face with many diverse adverstisements for:
EMIGRATION to USA.
An example of various advertisements...
"You have been selected to come FREE to the UNITED STATES of AMERICA( a big picture of the White House is seen) and the ads go on to explain that there is a lottery....blah blah blah...well perhaps something to look into, eh?"
I am reading a book entitled "Why Do People Hate America? written by Sardar and Merryl Wyn Davies, Icon Books, Toronto, Canada. It is interesting reading. I am told that this book is not sold in the United States. I would be very happy to send you a copy for your comments if you give me a postal address. Some of the chapters include American Hamburger and Other Viruses, The Burden of the American Hero and "They" "Evil, "Hate" "America"
"Hating America and Transcending Hatred".
The authors explain why America is hated in the World, why America perceives itself as the World and sees America as an elitist Earth population and not as a part of the society of nations....
My comment on the book: it is sad that America is perceived like it is. We did it to ourselves and we continue sinking deeper into the mud.
I am going on vacation...so I will hope to read your comments when I come back if you so wish.

intersting topic that Fox brought up. People who immigrate to America don't hate americans. Thats just fear of the unknown getting the better of you. People are leaving loved ones behind with the expectation of moving to a new wonderful country with open minded people and a healthy government..
I too see the increase of green cards being offered to yahoo users on a daily basis.
As for that book Fox....its easy to talk about american flaws. the world knows their current influence is huge and american culture has been brought into the lives of so many people thru t.v. The world won't reject American influences but are happy to point out faults instead of the positives
Sounds like a very interesting book. Maybe you could give us a few of the more interesting highlights.

Nobody seems to be turning down our military aid or money. Why is that?

81-year-old man carjacked by 14-year-old girl
Police say it all started at the home of an 81-year-old man on New Mexico Street. The man says a teenage girl came to his door asking to use the phone. He refused.
She came back and asked again. Again he refused.
The third time she returned she had what police say is a “replica” .45 caliber handgun and demanded the keys to the man’s car. He did not refuse.

I just wanted to clarify something about the distribution of books.
Books are published by publishing companies, then the distribution rights are sold to distributors who are often publishers as well, but not necessarily. The book in question was printed and published in Canada, but perhaps the rights to distribute this book in the states haven't been purchased by any American distributors. A distributor will buy the rights to sell a book based on projected sales. Given the subject matter of this book, it is possible that no American distributors were interested. I'm assuming here that Fox's information is accurate.
Because it is available on Amazon.com doesn't necessarily mean it is available in the states. It used to be that book stores wouldn't sell any books published outside their country, as the distribution and retailing of foreign publicatons was very costly and complcated then and the process took literally weeks. Because of changes in those policies, it is much easier for Amazon, in this case, to purchase an individual book from a foreign publisher without alot of red tape and transferring costs. So, theoretically, this book may not be distributed in the states, simply because no one bought the rights to distribute it, but you can still order it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.
And that concludes our mini-seminar on publishing rights and distibution.
I am reading a book entitled "Why Do People Hate America? written by Sardar and Merryl Wyn Davies, Icon Books, Toronto, Canada. It is interesting reading. I am told that this book is not sold in the United States. I would be very happy to send you a copy for your comments if you give me a postal address.
we don't ban books in America. You can buy the book on Amazon.com for $9.28

Woman wakes up, finds tattoo on ankle
Tue Aug 8, 7:52 PM ET
DES MOINES, Iowa - Hillary Snyder said she isn't going to let her boyfriend's antics get under her skin. Snyder, 20, awoke recently to find she had been tattooed by her boyfriend while she slept.
She said she took a painkiller with a sleeping pill before she went to bed Saturday night. When she awoke, she discovered a tattoo of a five-pointed star on her right ankle.
Snyder said she had previously told her boyfriend she didn't want a tattoo. He wanted her to get a tattoo of a five-pointed start to match one of his own, she said.
"At least he didn't flub it up," she said
The boyfriend wasn't identified. No arrests had been made. The investigation was continuing.
A police report accuses the now-former boyfriend of domestic assault. But Snyder isn't so sure.
"I mean it's not like he beat me up. There were no bruises or blood or anything. I'm just not going to see him again."

WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?
My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq's regime has been completed. Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete. This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.
Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain , Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there. The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.
Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.
The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption. Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France.
In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Attack us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.
Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China.
I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis.
I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York!
Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil. Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now.
We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care.
It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin."
Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate World Cup Soccer from America.
To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget. To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.
God bless America. Thank you and good night. If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.

Breast implants save woman's life?
Tue Aug 15, 7:43 AM ET
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli woman's breast implants saved her life when she was wounded in a Hezbollah rocket attack during
Israel’s war with the Lebanese group, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday.
Doctors found shrapnel embedded in the silicone implants, just inches from the 24-year-old's heart.
"She was saved from death," said a spokesman for Nahariya Hospital in northern Israel. The woman has been released from hospital.

Man Arrested in Death of JonBenet Ramsey

(AP) Flowers, pictures and stuffed animals adorn the gravesite of JonBenet Patricia Ramsey early Friday,...

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - A man suspected in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey nearly a decade ago was arrested Wednesday in Thailand, the district attorney said.
District Attorney Mary Lacey said the arrest followed several months of work. She disclosed no details about the suspect before a news conference scheduled for Thursday.
Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man was already being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges. CBS reported that the suspect, a 41-year-old second-grade teacher, will be brought back to the United States this weekend.
Ramsey family attorney Lin Wood said in Atlanta that he has been told that the suspect once lived in Conyers, Ga., outside of Atlanta. He would not comment on whether the Ramseys knew him, and he said he knew nothing else about the man.
Lin said the Ramseys learned about the suspect a least a month before JonBenet's mother, Patsy Ramsey, died in June.
"It's been a very long 10 years, and I'm just sorry Patsy isn't here for me to hug her neck," Wood said.
The girl was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder on Dec. 26, 1996.

This from the Toronto Sun, and written by one of Canada's most respected columnists:
By PETER WORTHINGTON
There are two key messages in the foiled attempt of terrorists in Britain to — allegedly — blow up 10 airliners as they approached landings in the U.S.
Both lessons are equally obvious, but both will be difficult for some to accept.
First is the need for vigilance and for every civilized country to support security and intelligence services even more than we have, and to co-operate and co-ordinate with allied agencies.
That sounds logical, especially in moments of crisis, or crises narrowly averted, as in this latest case.
But this verve for security fades quickly when immediate danger seems past.
Remember the hullabaloo when civil liberties and human rights groups were in a dither over U.S. President George Bush’s approval of monitoring phone calls to and from the Himalayas and suspect terror areas?
Bush was (is?) considered a greater danger by some than Osama bin Laden. And these were possible terrorist calls, not ordinary domestic calls.
We in Canada get fidgety whenever the U.S. suggests tougher border controls, or wants air marshals on planes, or to allow pilots and cockpit crews to carry low velocity weapons.
(It might be noted that although they don’t advertise the fact, on many if not most U.S. airlines, the pilots now have weapons available, and will not surrender easily — a lesson from the 9/11 skyjackings. As a potential passenger, I say good.)
In Canada, we reject the idea of authorities tapping phones or checking e-mails, etc.
But the reality is that we have to sacrifice some rights to privacy for the greater security of the country.
And we have to trust our security forces — CSIS, RCMP, provincial and local police intelligence, even military intelligence — more than we usually do, and certainly more than editorialists, commentators, political activists and civil liberty buffs would prefer.
We recently had the apprehended terror arrests in the Toronto and southern Ontario, which served clear warning that Canada is also a target viewed as an enemy too.
So get used to it — until the threat is diminished, which is unlikely in the foreseeable future.
Source of terror
The second lesson is that the source of this terror threat is militant Islamists.
This is always a touchy point, because no one here, no one in the U.S., Britain or Europe, is advocating anything resembling witch hunts or persecution of ordinary Muslims.
But there is no escaping the reality that virtually all the major terrorist acts of the past decade and beyond, have been from jihadists practising a militant perversion of religion.
That fact has to be recognized in our security efforts.
This doesn’t mean that Arabs or those who look like they are from the Middle East are automatically suspect, but it does mean that they should expect to be subjected to closer scrutiny by airport security than, say, Danish nuns, or little old ladies.
That said, increasingly, converts to Islam are being recruited as suicide bombers — so there is no template for what a potential terrorist “looks like.”
Our security elements and media should work with and gain the trust and support of Muslims in our society.
Already, Muslims are on the front line of our intelligence defences.
It seems the tipoff for the arrests in this suspected airline-boming plot out of London came from a Muslim woman who heard suspicious talk and called the police.
If so, she’s a heroine, and is representative of most Muslims.
In fact, a case can be made that Canada’s security, as well as Britain’s and perhaps America’s, depends on Muslims who know better than anyone where extremism is being fomented, what’s being said in the mosques, and perhaps what’s being planned.
We are all in this together, and it’s a “war” that must be won, else our collective future is even more perilous.

I had a discussion with a neighbour yesterday about this, and she was up in arms that we had crossed the line of political correctness by a mile and most of this was probably sensationalism to sell newspapers or help Bush out in the polls. But what's really astounding is the level of ignorance among the majority of people I talk to. People seem to be more concerned about not offending anyone than about protecting their way of life. I have to agree with you wholeheartedly Jazzy. What you are describing is exactly the ignorance of "real life" that has been going on here in the US for a couple of generations now.
The people that are willing to shackle our intelligence departments and military, by pushing "Protection of Civil Liberties", are the same ones that, when an attack happens, will scream "Why didn't someone do something to prevent this?"
What I call the "Dumbing Down" of America (and I suspect possibly Canada too), by not making sure our children get a real education, and also keeping our children from knowing and being aware of what goes on in the "Real outside world", is the greatest threat to our security.
Our enemies will just wait till most of the population, (those who control things anyway), are too ignorant, un-informed, ill-equipped, and unwilling to defend us against their attacks. Then they will simply slide in and take us by invoking the protections that the "Protect Civil Liberties at all Costs!" group have put in place.
I fear, that day is fast approaching.
:spbx:

Just heard a radio interview this AM -- a group of educators reviewed the text books being used in Saudi and Irani elementary schools. There was a clear anti-christian, anti-west bias in their teachings, some even going so far as to glorify the sacrifice of 10 yr olds acting as suicide bombers. It was their professional opinion that the governments were trying to shape the minds of the children to support a next-generation cataclysmic confrontation.
These books are also used in Pakistani Muslim schools (but funded by Saudi Arabia).
So, this really isn't about us -- it's about our children.
Oh, by the way, these books are used in the US to provide training in some of the mosques (one of which was located about 4 blocks from the White House).

Just more information to make my point. Anyone who thinks our enemies will listen to talk and polite commentary, or have anything but our total destruction, are living in a "All people are basically good inside" fantasy land!!!
"All people are basically good inside" is one of the most dangerous "urban myths" that is being propigated to our youth today. It is a nice theory, but has no basis in reality. People being good on the inside is the result of being raised and taught that way. Our enemies are indoctrinating their children to be exactly the opposite, and so to become exactly like them.
I was going to post the article that Jazzy posted here, in the Profiling thread. Do you think it will stir up too much if I do? (With Jazzy's permission, of course)

Cotties, I think if you changed the word judge to legislator, that could describe the US Senate, and the House of Representatives.
It would explain a lot of the decisions and laws they pass, or don't pass!!!!

I bet a lot of his cases are going to get re tried :(
Probably not -- there is no legal precedent for it. Judges have been known to sleep thru trials.
Each case would require a specific misapplication of judicial powers in order to be considered for re-trial.
Heck, if Cotties can wear one and teach school, why can't a judge run a trial?

Nude teens raise eyebrows
By Scott Christianson Fri Aug 25, 10:10 AM ET
BRATTLEBORO, Vermont (Reuters) - Some have appeared naked in a downtown parking lot. Others rode their bicycles or simply strolled the streets in the nude.
Teenagers in the quaint Vermont town of Brattleboro are raising eyebrows this summer with brazen displays of nudity.
So far they haven't been arrested or ticketed: public nudity isn't illegal in the town of 13,000 people, unless it's done to arouse sexual gratification.
Vermont has a live-and-let-live tradition, allowing skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing. Brattleboro, the first permanent English settlement in the state in 1724, is home to a community of writers, artists and musicians as well as transplanted entrepreneurs from Boston and New York.
When the weather grew hot this year, a couple of dozen teens took to holding hula hoop contests, riding bikes and parading past the shops wearing only their birthday suits.
Nobody, including the police, seemed to take offense until one local, Theresa Toney, went before the town government in August to complain about a group of youngsters naked in a parking lot.
"The parking lot is not a strip club," she said. "What about children seeing this?"
Town officials asked their attorney to draft an ordinance to ban such displays for the Select Board to vote on in September. When the teens heard about it, some staged a nude sit-in.
"I don't see why it's such a big deal," said Alec McPherson, a recent high school graduate as he sat at a coffee shop table, browsing a thick volume of artwork from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Everyone's naked in this book."
His companion, Jeremiah Compton, a high school junior who plays in a local metal-and-punk band, agreed. "It's just that we're bored and expressing our right," he said.
"We have a nuclear power plant a few miles away and a ridiculous war in the Middle East, countries getting bombed," said Ian Bigelow, a 23-year-old who had gathered with some of his friends outside a bookstore. "So why's it such a big problem if we chose to get nude?"

5 Things That Need a Downgrade Like Pluto
Sunday, August 27, 2006; Page M03
Last week, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of its official status as a planet. Here are five other things we'd really like to see demoted.
1. "Godfather III." This "film" is just not worthy of "Godfather" status.
2. Gluttony. If it remains a deadly sin, a lot of us are in trouble.
3. Tour de France/100 yard dash. Not a sport if winners keep getting busted for 'roids.
4. Segways. Try walking, pal.
5. Tom Cruise. Downgrade to a B-list actor . . . oh wait, already done. Thanks, Paramount.
Exit Pluto, enter a problem
Peter Weekes
August 27, 2006
FOR THE Melbourne Planetarium, the timing of the decision to airbrush Pluto from its position as the solar system's ninth and smallest planet was perfect. The same can't be said about the rest of the world though.
As educators around the world grapple with the earth-bound reality of updating school curriculums and text books, by chance the planetarium's present exhibition examines what constitutes a planet.
"The Problem with Pluto is probably the most up-to-date educational resource out there at the moment because it tackles all the questions of what constitutes a planet, which is how this whole debate about Pluto began," a spokeswoman said.
"It's great timing because people can walk away with a thorough understanding of what constitutes a planet and why the decision was made to push Pluto into the dwarf category."
In the wake of the decision by the International Astronomical Union to strip Pluto's status, the Planetarium is reviewing all its educational literature. "I think a lot of things will have to change from posters and books and even the rhymes we learnt at school," the spokeswoman said, adding that they hadn't even started thinking about the cost of losing Pluto.
Nor has the Education Department, which must update the school curriculum and text books across the state.
On online auction site eBay, there was only one Pluto item yesterday, a "Save Pluto" T-shirt, which only fetched $18.50, and was outsold by a Kermit the Frog T-shirt. Pluto has had a dog of a week.

Woman crashes when teaching dog to drive
Mon Aug 28, 8:13 AM ET
BEIJING - A woman in Hohhot, the capital of north China's Inner Mongolia region, crashed her car while giving her dog a driving lesson, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday.
No injuries were reported although both vehicles were slightly damaged, it said.
The woman, identified only be her surname, Li, said her dog "was fond of crouching on the steering wheel and often watched her drive," according to Xinhua.
"She thought she would let the dog 'have a try' while she operated the accelerator and brake," the report said. "They did not make it far before crashing into an oncoming car."
Xinhua did not say what kind of dog or vehicles were involved but Li paid for repairs.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - Steve Irwin, the Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed Monday by a stingray barb during a diving expedition, media reports said.
Irwin, 44, was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its website.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 2,100 kilometres north of the state capital of Brisbane when the incident happened.
Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef, but said the person's name wasn't being released pending notification of the family.
A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death.
"The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest," Hamil said.
Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the media reports but could not make any comment.
Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program, Crocodile Hunter, which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has been broadcast around the world on the Discovery channel.
He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.
The public image was dented in 2004 when Irwin triggered an uproar by holding his baby in one arm while feeding large crocodiles inside a zoo pen. Irwin claimed at the time there was no danger to his son, and authorities declined to charge Irwin with violating safety regulations.
Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken against him.
He is survived by his American wife Terri Irwin, from Oregon, who was Terri Raines before they married in 1992, their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

Was looking at EURONEWS and saw that there was war with a place called.....TRANSNISTRIA... I looked it up and found on WIKIPEDIA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transnistria
QUOTE:
The War of Transnistria involved armed clashes on a limited scale that broke out between the Transnistrian separatists and the Moldovan police as early as November 1990 at Dubasari. Fighting intensified throughout 1992 until a ceasefire that same year which has held ever since.
Background
Most of the territory of the current Republic of Moldova was incorporated into the Soviet Union with the creation of the Moldavian SSR in 1940. The act, later denounced by present-day Moldova which declared it "null and void" in its Declaration of Independence in 1991, followed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Previous to the creation of the Moldavian SSR, Moldova to the west of the Dniester river was part of Romania whereas Transnistria to the east of the Dniester was part of the Soviet Union.
During the last years of the 1980's, the political landscape of the USSR was changing due to Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of perestroika and glasnost, which allowed some political liberalization at the regional level. In the Moldavian SSR, as in many other parts of the Soviet Union, exclusivist nationalism became the leading political force. In August and September 1989, the Moldavian Supreme Soviet enacted laws introducing the Latin Romanian alphabet for written Moldovan language and making it the country's first official language, in place of Russian. On 27 April 1990 the Supreme Soviet adopted a new tricolour flag (red, yellow and blue) with the Moldavian coat of arms and changed the national anthem to that of Romania.

HOLIDAYS IN THE DANGER ZONE:
PLACES THAT DON'T EXIST
There are almost 200 official countries in the world, but there are dozens more breakaway states which are determined to be separate and independent.
All of the breakaway states have declared independence after violent struggles with a neighbour. Some now survive peacefully, but others are a magnet for terrorists and weapons smuggling, and have armies ready for a fight.
In these two programmes Simon Reeve visits six such places: Somaliland, Trans-Dniester and Taiwan (part 1); Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia (part 2).

Ryan gets 6½ years in prison
September 6, 2006
A stoic former Gov. George Ryan was sentenced this afternoon to 6 1/2 years in federal prison for years of corruption while he held state office.
Before U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer imposed the sentence, Ryan apologized to voters for his actions.
“When they elected me as the governor of this state, they expected better. And I let them down. For that I apologize,” Ryan said. “The result deeply pains me. This is the saddest day of my life.”
Ryan’s co-defendant, Lawrence Warner, was sentenced to three years and five months in prison — a sentence announced about 90 minutes after Ryan’s.
Ryan, 72, showed no expression when the sentence was handed down. Nor did his wife Lura Lynn, who sat behind him and beside former Gov. Jim Thompson.
Ryan was convicted in April of steering contracts and leases to his pals, including Warner, while taking gifts, vacations and cash in return. Ryan was also convicted of lying to FBI agents.
The sentence is the exact same term given to Ryan’s former right hand man and protege, Scott Fawell. But Fawell, who testified against Ryan, was just 45 years old when sentenced in 2003.
Pallmeyer said Ryan’s conviction could overshadow what he did in a lifetime of politics.
“For many people, the corruption will eclipse the policy decisions,” the judge said. “That’s one thing Mr. Fawell does not suffer.”
Also in the courtroom was U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, FBI Special-Agent-In-Charge Robert Grant and the Rev. Duane “Scott” Willis and his wife, Janet. The couple lost six of their kids in a 1994 accident linked to a truck driver that had paid bribes to get his commercial driver’s license. That accident led to the Operation Safe Road investigation that snared Ryan and Fawell.
Ryan faced eight to 10 years in prison. His lawyers asked for 30 months, citing his age, his health issues and those of his wife.
Ryan’s family, including his son and five daughters were in the courtroom. They previously sent letters to Pallmeyer asking for leniency.
Before the sentence, Ryan said the sentence the government was seeking “for a man my age and my health would be tantamount to a death sentence. I ask that you temper your judgment in light of the good that I’ve tried to do during my 72 years of life.”
Ryan thanked Thompson’s law firm, Winston & Strawn, for its work in offering “a defense that I desperately needed but could not afford.”
And he said he was worried about Lura Lynn.
“It’s for my wife that I harbor the greatest anxiety,” Ryan said. “I know now that we face the prospect of involuntary separation.”

Discovery of abnormal 'intersex' fish in Potomac River raise questions about human impact
7:21 a.m. September 6, 2006
WASHINGTON – Scientists say abnormal “intersex” fish, with both male and female characteristics, have been discovered in the Potomac River and its tributaries across the Capitol Region, raising questions about how contaminants are affecting millions of people who drink tap water there.
“I don't know, and I don't think anybody knows, the answer to that question right now: Is the effect in the fish transferable to humans?” said Thomas Jacobus, general manager of the Washington Aqueduct, which filters river water for residents to drink in the District of Columbia, Arlington, Va., and Falls Church, Va.
So far, there is no evidence that tap water from the Potomac is unsafe to drink, according to Jacobus and officials at other area utilities.
Humans should be less susceptible to pollutants than fish because of their larger bodies and different hormone systems. And unlike fish, their bodies are not constantly exposed to the water.
The worrisome fish were first found in a West Virginia stream in 2003. Now, scientists are finding male smallmouth and largemouth bass with immature eggs in their sex organs at testing sites dotting the region.
Last month's testing at three tributaries emptying into the Potomac revealed that more than 80 percent of all male smallmouth bass found were growing eggs, according to Vicki S. Blazer, a fish pathologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
At a testing site in Washington, seven of 13 male largemouth bass showed some kind of unusual feminine characteristic, Blazer told The Washington Post. Six of the seven tested positive for a protein used to produce eggs and three actually carried eggs.
Although scientists have not identified the source or sources of the problem, the results appear to suggest that the Potomac River and its tributaries have a problem with so-called “endocrine disrupters,” which can tamper with natural chemical signals.
In the past 10 years, pollutants mimicking hormones have raised alarms around the world as alligators, frogs, polar bears and other animals have developed abnormalities.
Scientists have identified a large number of pollutants that could be to blame – including human estrogen from processed sewage, animal estrogen from farm manure, certain pesticides and soap additives.
The discovery in Minnesota over a decade ago of frogs with extra legs, ovaries in males and other deformities was considered an early warning sign of environmental distress linked to farm chemicals.
Congress in 1996 required the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to study how the pollutants may affect human health. A decade later, however, officials said the agency hasn't tested any chemical, the Post reported.
“I would have hoped it would have been faster, but this is a very difficult program,” said Clifford Gabriel, director of the EPA's Office of Science Coordination and Policy.

Blair Says He Will Step Down Within 12 Months
LONDON, Sept. 7 -- Prime Minister Tony Blair, who has led Britain for nearly a decade through economic prosperity and the pain of war, announced Thursday that he would resign within 12 months.
Battered by diving public approval ratings and an increasingly acrimonious feud with his presumed successor, Chancellor Gordon Brown, Blair appeared stunned at the fevered demands in recent days that he make clear when he would step down. On Wednesday, eight junior members of his administration quit, the latest members of his party to say publicly that Blair has become a liability for them at the polls.
"The first thing I'd like to do is to apologize, actually," Blair said during a visit to a London school, adding that the Labor Party's public spat in the past week "has not been our finest hour."
"What is important now is that we understand that it's the interests of the country that come first and we move on," he said. Then, addressing what he called "my timing and date of departure," he said he would not be Labor's leader when it held its 2007 annual conference. That means he will leave at some point before this time next year.
"I think the precise timetable should be left up to me," he said. With an uncharacteristically weary look for a man famous for his ear-to-ear smile, Blair added, "I would have preferred to do this in my own way."
It was a muffled, small beginning to the final chapter of a historic premiership. Since his party's landslide election in 1997, Blair, 53, has outlasted every other major European leader in office and become one of the world's most recognized statesmen.
It was unclear if Blair's announcement would satisfy his critics.
"Some of Gordon Brown's supporters no doubt hold the view that since Blair has said he is going, the best thing is to get it over and done with," Karen Buck, a Labor member of Parliament who is close to Blair, said in an interview.
"He has been without doubt the most successful leader Labor has ever had in terms of winning elections," she said, citing gains in the economy, health services and education. But Blair's support of the Iraq war and his reluctance to call for an immediate cease-fire during the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon, which many people here saw as another siding with Washington, "have been a major factor in undermining party support for him," she said.
While most West European leaders opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Blair argued passionately that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and was an imminent threat. When those claims were discredited, Blair's popularity here suffered severely. In a YouGov poll in July, only 27 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with Blair's job performance.
Despite the political cost, Blair has remained an unwavering spokesman for the Iraq war and has committed thousands of British troops to Afghanistan as well. "The Iraqi and Afghan fight for democracy is our fight," he told an audience in Los Angeles last month. "Same values. Same enemy. Victory for them is victory for us all."
The next general election must be held by 2010 at the latest. When Blair steps aside, Labor members will vote for a new leader. If Brown is selected, as is expected, he will automatically become prime minister as the head of the largest party in Parliament. Although he has effectively been the second-ranking official in the country for more than nine years, Brown's supporters want him to have enough time to prove his command of the top job before facing David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, in the general election.
Buck said she believed Blair would leave next May and hoped that other party members would not squabble over "a few months here or there."
Blair has won three consecutive elections and served longer than any other prime minister since 1827, except for Margaret Thatcher.
But the scene outside the school where Blair spoke Thursday highlighted his recent unpopularity. While teachers and some students applauded, others joined a noisy antiwar protest. Some held up a four-foot-high model of a dog biscuit as a gift for "Tony the Poodle," a reference to what many Britons see as his blind obedience to President Bush.
Blair's popularity has also plummeted because of problems closer to home. Many Britons blame his policies for what they see as an excessive flow of immigrants into Britain over the past 10 years. A police investigation into Labor's campaign financing and sex scandals involving leading members of his cabinet also hurt his reputation.
"And lots of people are just tired of him," said Iain McLean, a professor of politics at Oxford University. Tired, he said, of a Blair who pursues policies, at home and abroad, as if he were on "God's mission to put the world right."
"I certainly welcome what he said," said Mark Tami, a Labor member of Parliament who resigned Wednesday from Blair's government. But Tami said Blair would soon need to be more specific about his resignation date. "Over the next several weeks we will be able to tell if the uncertainty over his departure has ended," he said.
The seeds of Thursday's statement were sown in October 2004, when Blair made two announcements in an interview with the BBC: He would go into the hospital the following day for a minor heart operation, and his third term as prime minister would be his last.
Blair has faced questions ever since about exactly when he would go.
Brown, 55, the prime minister's old friend and increasingly bitter rival, said Thursday that Blair had put the country in a "unique situation" by saying "he does not want to lead our party and our government into the next general election." While many analysts said they believed Brown helped orchestrate a virtual coup against Blair this week, Brown's supporters denied that.
"When I met the prime minister yesterday, I said to him -- as I've said on many occasions, and I repeat today -- it is for him to make the decision" about when to step down, Brown told reporters during a visit to his native Scotland. "I said also to him . . . that I will support him in the decision he makes."
Although Brown is the most likely successor, other top Labor officials, including Home Secretary John Reid, could mount a challenge.
Brown, the rumpled, bear-like son of an austere Scottish preacher, is a serious, brooding policy wonk far different from the flashy, telegenic Blair. But his foreign and domestic policies would be similar to Blair's, said Tony Travers, a government specialist at the London School of Economics.
As Britain's longest-serving chancellor of the exchequer, Brown has been widely credited with disciplined stewardship of financial policy. Citing years of strong growth, low inflation and low unemployment, Travers said: "You can't argue with the figures. It's an extraordinary achievement."
Just before he was whisked away in his dark green Jaguar on Thursday, the man who presided over the transformation of gray Britain into "cool Britannia" seemed to be pleading for his enemies to stop plotting his demise. "We can't treat the public as irrelevant bystanders in a subject as important as who is their prime minister," Blair said.
British gamblers, meanwhile, are wagering vast sums on his departure date. "It's not very becoming," Travers said. "Say what you like about the American system, but you know when the president's going."

Australia's Crocodile Hunter gets private funeral
Sun Sep 10, 12:42 AM ET
A private funeral service was held for Australian TV naturalist Steve Irwin on Saturday and he will be buried at his family's zoo in the northern state of Queensland, local media reported.
Irwin's father, Bob Irwin, had declined a government offer for a state funeral for his son.
Irwin, known as the "Crocodile Hunter" after his popular TV documentaries which aired around the world, was killed six days ago by a stingray barb to the chest while diving on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
After the funeral service his body was taken to his family's Australia Zoo wildlife park, where he is expected to be buried, local media reported on Sunday.
Irwin, 44, had flirted with death many times in his "Crocodile Hunter" documentaries, seen by 200 million people, wrestling with some of the world's most dangerous creatures.
News of Irwin's death clogged Internet news sites and drew tributes from around the world. Prime Minister John Howard interrupted parliament to pay tribute to him, saying he was distressed by the loss of a remarkable Australian.
A public memorial service that is likely to draw thousands of mourners was expected to take place later this month.

Australian Stingrays Killed in Possible Irwin Revenge Attacks
Sept. 13 (Bloomberg) -- ``Crocodile Hunter'' Steve Irwin's manager appealed to fans not to seek revenge against stingrays, as authorities investigate a spate of killings since the television star was fatally struck by one of the sea creatures.
``To hear that people are actually going out and killing stingrays and cutting off their tails is barbaric,'' said John Stainton, in an interview with Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio today. ``I can understand that some people probably are doing this out of vengeance, but they should not.''
At least 10 stingrays have washed up on beaches in Australia's Queensland state with their tails cut off since Irwin died on Sept. 4, Queensland's Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries said in a statement yesterday. Animal welfare officers are investigating, the department's General Manager Rick Symons said.

Man May Have Sent 2 Billion Spam E-Mails
By MERAIAH FOLEY (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
September 13, 2006 6:52 AM EDT
SYDNEY, Australia - An Australian man under investigation for illegal spamming sent more than 2 billion e-mails promoting Viagra in a year, an official said Wednesday.
Experts say that's a drop in the ocean compared to the number of spam e-mails sent globally each year, and the system he used probably wasn't very sophisticated.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority began investigating the man, whose identity was not immediately released, after receiving a tip-off from authorities in the Netherlands in May last year.
Danyel Molenaar, a project manager for the Dutch Independent Regulator of Post and Telecommunications, said the man had rented 35 servers for around 14,000 Australian dollars (US$10,493; euro8,256) each per month from a small Internet service provider in the Netherlands to carry out the alleged spam campaign.
"These 35 servers were used just for sending spam day-in, day-out for at least a year, probably longer," Molenaar said Wednesday. "This operation probably sent out billions and billions of e-mails."
Australia has some of the toughest laws in the world against spamming, the notoriously hard-to-stop practice of flooding as many inboxes as possible with unwanted sales messages in the hope some of the receivers will reply.
Under Australia's Spam Act of 2003, it is illegal for Australian residents to be involved in the sending of unsolicited commercial e-mails, even if they are generated from outside the country.
The Australian authority's chairwoman, Lyn Maddock, said the man had allegedly sent more than 2 billion e-mails, mostly promoting the anti-impotence drug Viagra, to Internet users around the world.
Officials from the authority, which is responsible for enforcing the Spam Act, had searched the man's home and were examining the evidence, Maddock said in a statement. The authority declined to give further details while the investigation was under way.
Peter Coroneos, the chief executive for Australia's Internet Industry Association, said he didn't know the specifics about the man's case. But he added that high-volume spammers don't usually use servers owned by commercial Internet service providers to generate their e-mails, because they are generally too easy to trace.
Instead, sophisticated spammers use parasitic software programs known as Trojan horses to hijack individual computers and use them as remote servers for sending spam. The method is virtually impossible to prosecute because spammers can take over an unsuspecting user's computer, send millions of e-mails in a few hours, and leave without a trace.
"An unprotected server on a reasonable connection can send out about half a million spam e-mails an hour," or more than a billion e-mails a day, Coroneos said.
Nevertheless, he said 2 billion e-mails was still "a significant amount of spam."
"If the average spam e-mail takes five seconds to identify and delete, you multiply that by (two) billion and that's essentially the amount of time he's costing Internet users," he said.
Penalties for spamming in Australia range from 220,000 Australian dollars (US$164,765) per day for first-time corporate offenders to A$1.1 million (US$823,826) per day for repeat offenders.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Comments by the Dutch justice minister that Sharia law could be introduced if two-thirds of the population supported it have unleashed a political storm in the Netherlands, where immigration is a hotly debated issue.
Anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders has called for an emergency parliamentary debate on Thursday morning to discuss the remarks made by Piet Hein Donner in a book published on Wednesday, a government spokesman said.
Donner distanced himself from the row late on Wednesday, telling Dutch news agency ANP: "People are trying to put the words in my mouth, saying I am in favor of introducing Sharia law but that is not the case."
The minister said that Sharia law ran counter to the Dutch constitution, although in theory the constitution could be amended if a majority of the Dutch population wanted the Islamic law introduced.
The scale of the reaction to his remarks, made in the book "Land of Hate and Envy" about changes in the Netherlands over the last 15 years, astonished him, he said.
The densely populated Netherlands has about 1 million Muslims among its population of 16 million. But a government study said last week that Muslims would make up 8 percent of the Dutch population by 2020 from about 6 percent now.
However, the study noted that the rise in the growth of the Muslim population, which accelerated in the last few decades due to mass immigration from Turkey and Morocco, would likely slow in the future.
Immigration, particularly of Muslims, has been a hot topic in the Netherlands since the murder of popular anti-immigration politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002. Concern about the radicalization of the Muslim minority was further stoked two years later when a Dutch Muslim murdered a filmmaker critical of Islam.
Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk, who has pushed through tough new policies such as Dutch language and culture tests for new immigrants, agreed Donner's remarks were theoretical.
"Our democracy is much more than the might of the majority. People fought for years for fundamental values. These jar with Sharia. I trust in the fact that we will stick by fundamental values such as the equality of man and woman in our democracy," she said.
When we go and live in Moslem countries we are required to do what our hosts want right? If a minority of people decide for the majority is there something correct here?
