Still trying to decide what to do--I can get the external CD drive from Costco. But then I wondered if it would make more sense to get an external CD drive and save all my photos/videos to CD.

If your computer crashed, would you rather have your digital photos on an external hard drive, or on CD?

hi sweets ...i have a external HD..250GB,i put everything thats important on it and stick it away in the desk ......u can buy a dvd writer for under $40 ,which will hold 4.7 GB or double that if u get a dual layer burner ...cd's only hold 700 mb ..

I have pictures on DVD and on my External HD....just to be safe ...

If u store Dvd's properly then its the better option ....

I'd have to chime in and say my external Hard Drive is MUCH more useful than a CD burner -- if you were going to be making copies of your pictures for lots of other people, sure, you might want the burner. But just for backups, the hard drive works perfectly for me -- it can hold a LOT more data, to the point where I can back up everything on my computer without worrying.

I guess it comes down to how often you think you're going to need to give your photos to anyone else -- if it's purely for your own use, then the hard drive is your best bet spacewise.

or you could store your info on-line using X-Drive for free.

That's true, too ... I've always just wondered, what happens when they finally go under (as almost all dot-coms do eventually)? I'd have to read their fine print and see what happens to the data then ...

That way you can always hook it up to another computer easily and dump the files since each DVD only holds about 4.5GB's and you can get a 250GB External HDD for cheap - think about carrying around ~65 DVD's or one little drive! :)

That's my point of view, as well ...

I'd have to say - do both if you can. There are very large USB thumbdrives now that work just like External Drives - if all you want is to store files.
