Baseball's Rockies seek revival on two levels

By Bob Nightengale, USA TODAY

DENVER — No copies of Playboy or Penthouse are in the clubhouse of baseball's Colorado Rockies. There's not even a Maxim. The only reading materials are daily newspapers, sports and car magazines and the Bible.

Music filled with obscenities, wildly popular with youth today and in many other clubhouses, is not played. A player will curse occasionally but usually in hushed tones. Quotes from Scripture are posted in the weight room. Chapel service is packed on Sundays. Prayer and fellowship groups each Tuesday are well-attended. It's not unusual for the front office executives to pray together.

On the field, the Rockies are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons and only the second time in their 14-year history. Behind the scenes, they quietly have become an organization guided by Christianity — open to other religious beliefs but embracing a Christian-based code of conduct they believe will bring them focus and success.

From ownership on down, it's an approach the Rockies are proud of — and something they are wary about publicizing. "We're nervous, to be honest with you," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd says. "It's the first time we ever talked about these issues publicly. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs."

My heart was with the Rockies until I read this. Let's see a Red Sox sweep!

The Rockies haven't looked to good the first two games of the World Series!
Maybe number 3 will be lucky for them?

Note from God: screen for talent, not by religious intolerance.

What's a sweep plus a spanking? A swanking :sp:

But maybe God has just been too busy shoring up Notre Dame :D

The Rockies are a VERY young Team and organization and I truly believe the best is yet to come for them! Since noone expected them to even BE in the World Series in the first place! No regrets! They still beat some of the best in the BIZ! That has to be worth something!
I continue my Support!

Matt Holiday is the MAN! MVP!

You got it, Mike --- it's going to be a fun ride.

I heard of separation of church and state, but separation of church and baseball is a new one on me.

If they've all agreed to the new code of conduct whats the problem? Its not being forced down their throats...they are willingly participating. :sg

If I tell you I'm a Christian...pray everyday and believe in Heaven is it gonna change the way you interact with me?

Of course not, I would love to ineract with you:)

But if I don't get hired because I don't believe in the same Heaven, then isn't it you who have changed the way you choose to interact with me?

How willing is the participation when it is "encouraged" by the guy who signs your paycheck?

I strongly suspect "the guy who signs the paycheck" would hire the son of Satan if he could bat 400 or throw a 99 mph fast ball. None of us are immune to hypocrisy, specially the religious right or professional sports.

Nothing "Poor" about a team that noone thought would go to the playoffs, much less the series and won 21 of 22 games in a row! Young Team! Overachieved above all expectations! I played Sports half my life from a kid to playing College Football and believe me,they achieved alot! They still beat all but one Team! More than most Teams that have been around alot longer can say!

Yeah no doubt, an amazing story and season...I just Hate the Red Soxs / Yankees or any other team that can buy a championship... Would have loved to see the underdog pull one out here....

Exactly! Since the SOX and the Yankees have higher payrolls by triple than almost any other teams,I think the underdogs did pretty well for themselves! Team hasn't been around 1/10 as long either!
