I keep hearing more and more about all the toys, the hundreds of thousands of toys, that have been made in China and are now being recalled. I have some toys that I have set aside that are classics, toys like Lincoln Logs and Brio train sets, that I had hoped would be passed down to my son's children. Now I'm not so sure about that.

These recalls also have me wondering about what I might give for gifts... hmm... maybe include a lead testing kit for mom and dad when I get their kid a toy?

How have all these recalls effected what you might buy? Have you had to return any toys?

I can tell you that it's going to affect me now that Hoss and I are having another little one...I didn't have to worry about our older son, he's more into computer games, gutiars, and drawing....but now???....I can tell you, I'm going to be very cautious about buying ANY toy now.

We have had to return a few toys. There really is not much you can do about it unless you buy all U.S., Canadian, or western European made toys (good luck with that). I think toys in general are a lot safer then when I was young. If you take for example an old metal Tonka truck, they had sharp edges all over them. Pick up one of those old dump trucks wrong and you risk slicing off a finger. We have lots of organizations both government and non-government that monitor toy safety, hence all the recalls…

Prevention is always best but don’t forget to have your kids lead tested!!!

In the UK, Mattel said that 2,540 toys have been recalled. In August, Mattel recalled 94,000 Fisher-Price toys in the UK, and a fortnight later two million Polly Pocket, Batman and Barbie toys.

You know Momma, I keep wondering how long this has been going on. I think it has for a while and they just now got caught!

:spbx: If there is blame to be placed its on the USA and Canadian gove for not having a stronger watch dog. The most recent news is that "the Toy" comany asked for the lead paint, it wasnt China's fault... :sc Sure ok but China knew the dangers in using lead paint so they should have refused to use it...and why is lead paint still available?

Send your toys back to the toy companies with a nasty note...no matter how old they are and ask for a refund....have children's blood tested for lead every few years...

You are right, it is the US govt. that isn't keeping a close eye on the imports American companies are bringing in. It's a shame this time it effects so many young children.

Lead testing of kids is a good thing, but once lead enters the bloodstream, the damage is already done and it cannot be reversed. We need to make sure it doesn't get there in the first place!

I wonder why we were not affected as kids? I imagine everything we touched had lead contamination of some sort. Think of the kids chewing on the blocks and crib rails...oh my gosh.

All kids have to have the mandatory lead testing now days....we have had just a few kids come back with contamination the last 5 years or so that I've been working in the lab. Mostly the kids that live in old houses with peeling paint....

Dang it....its always something.
We have 3 granddaughters that we buy for...it affects our choices....
