I don't think I could handle hurricanes or earthquakes. I hate the snow with passion, but I'd take that over both over those anyday.

Pretty tough to shovel an earthquake -- or a hurricane!

The technology that they have today is a wonderful thing. We get plenty of warning(for the most part) of when they will arrive and how stronge they will be. I have already put the shutters up on the new house and I will be taking all the furniture off of the balcony here at the condo on Sunday. This will be a small one for us, Cat 2, so we will stick it out here. THe only real problem will be having the power go out. I have been making icecubes for the last couple of days.
You guys in New england better keep an eye on this one also! the latest computer models have this thing going right up the coast into the Bay of Fundy.

WB, you are so right, I would not want to go through an earthquake!!

Hurricanes aren't so bad when you know when to get the hell out of the way of them. I hate tornados. They can hit at any time. I've been lucky... I've had a couple of misses, but I never had to ride one out. My next house will have a safe room in it... I just hope I never see an F5. You can't do a thing when those come through except kiss you ass goodbye.

I also agree on tornados. Grew up in north Texas, but no tornados have hit the town since 1903. I do remember one night when one went through my part of campus when I was in college in '72.
A hurricane you have a couple of days to work with, provided you watch TV or read the paper (but I know people who don't and get surprised). The friends that I have that live near the coast or have property down there, all have precut lumber to cover the windows and such and have plans on what they are going to do. But they are long time residents and in some cases 3-4th generation, it is the "newcomers" that generally don't have a clue on what to do.

Having been born and raised in West Texas tornadoes don't scare me. Now earthquakes scare the devil out of me.....I think it just depends on where you live and what you get accustomed to. I have friends who grew up on the west coast who are terrified of tornadoes and good thunder and lightening storms but don't blink an eye at earthquakes or hurricanes......of course they are all nuts! ;)

Here in the UK we are lucky to some degree,( East Anglia hasnt had the weather you guys have, strong winds maybe) however I would be useless in weather patterns you have. I admire your courage that you get up and go after the thing has hit and done the damage we see on the news. Yes you guys have guts and determination.

I've lived in various parts of "Tornado Ally" all my life and they still scare the hell out me. I don't think I can ever "get accustomed" to it. When I was young, maybe 10 or 11 we had one rip through our town killing dozens and destroying a high school during a swim meet, (the tornado took out the pool area and gym of the school) several sub-divisions of homes, a roller rink, a grocery store... all on a typical Saturday afternoon when these places were filled with people. I remember my father comparing it to his time in Korea. But Mother Nature can be cruel no matter where you live.

As our friend Learman says, very true, Birmingham had a mini tornadoe this year, thankfully no one was killed but in a brief minute the damage done was terrible, yes mother nature can be so cruel

according to the weather it looks like it is finaly on it's way. The current path has it hitting Naples on the west coast and going northeast across the state. That would take it north of us so the winds won't be as bad. But these things can turn at any moment so you never know. I'm sure we will get a lot of rain.

I hate to admit it, but I did enjoy riding out the hurricanes I did when I was younger. The last one was Allen in 1980 (Reached Cat 5 but lost strength to Cat 3 before landfall), but I can still remember it clearly. The bursts of wind and feeling the entire house shake for hours was an adreniline rush.
I'm not sure I'd enjoy it now like I did when I was 16, but I does leave an impression.

Hey everyone, I'm back!! We just got power back around 4pm this afternoon. I woke up on Monday morning with the wind howling. I took a quick shower and made a pot of coffee and as soon as the pot was filled the power went out! We are on the 9th floor with floor to ceiling windows and they were rattling like hell!
I was looking west into this small bay and three boats lost their tie lines to the peirs and were damamged. One actualy sank. We have a new high rise going up across the intrecoastal on the beach, and one of the cranes that theyattach to the side of these collapsed and fell over A1A. The houses below me had their roofs peeled back exposing the roof joists. I took a walk yesterday and the damage is severe all over.
I think the wind was the worst as the back end of the eye wall came through. they say that the continued wind was 80mph and we had gusts up to 100 mph.
Right now, there are two mile lines to get gas. I went to the supermarket yesterday and I waited in a two hour line to check out. No ice, water or charchol. thankfuly I was stocked up on ice and water. there is still a curfew from 7pm to 7am.
Anyway, We are all safe here, the Ft Lauderdale airport is opening tomorrow and life is getting back to normal more each day.

I'm so glad to hear you're okay, bigO. It must have been surreal watching all that destruction right outside your window. We've had some pretty scary weather up here in the past, and I always find it so humbling. No matter what humanity builds, Mother Nature can turn it to rubble in the blink of an eye. Glad the worst of it is over for you.

I hope no one here was affected or has friends that were affected by the tornado (or tornados) that hit southern Indiana and Kentucky this past weekend. This is one of the reasons that I worry more about tornados more than hurricanes or earthquakes (there is a difference between fear and worry). A strong cold front pushed south with large thunderstorms in the middle of the night before warnings could be sent.
It is also another reason why I don't live in a trailer (or manufactored home with wheels) or try to live too near to a group of them, it seems that they have something that attracts tornados and don't withstand the winds. But then I do live in Texas and for some reason we don't do basements around here.
