The San Francisco Bay Area experienced yet another quake last night. The quake registered 5.6 on the Richter Scale and was centered approximately 8 miles northeast of the Alum Rock Area of San Jose California (Santa Clara County.) The quake lasted 56 seconds.
There were no reports of injuries as a result of the quake and damages were limited to broken bottles and cans falling from shelves in stores in the area of the quake.
The shaker was felt as far north as Petaluma California (Sonoma County). This was the worst earthquake since the 1989 Loma Preita Quake which caused millions of dollars of damage to the Bay Area and leveled homes in San Francisco and the surrounding area.
The quake occured along the Calaveras Fault Line, raising fears of larger event along the Hayward Fault which runs through the Eastbay (Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties). The last quake to occur along the Hayward Fault was One Hundred Fifty (150) years ago.
The Calaveras has a long history of quakes with magnitudes around 5.0. Earlier on Tuesday (October 30) there were a handful of smaller quakes, the largest being 2.9, which were centered near Concord California (Contra Costa County). There were injuries or damage from this smaller quake and only a few people felt the temblor.
