The San Francisco Bay Area experienced yet another quake last night. The quake registered 5.6 on the Richter Scale and was centered approximately 8 miles northeast of the Alum Rock Area of San Jose California (Santa Clara County.) The quake lasted 56 seconds.

There were no reports of injuries as a result of the quake and damages were limited to broken bottles and cans falling from shelves in stores in the area of the quake.

The shaker was felt as far north as Petaluma California (Sonoma County). This was the worst earthquake since the 1989 Loma Preita Quake which caused millions of dollars of damage to the Bay Area and leveled homes in San Francisco and the surrounding area.

The quake occured along the Calaveras Fault Line, raising fears of larger event along the Hayward Fault which runs through the Eastbay (Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties). The last quake to occur along the Hayward Fault was One Hundred Fifty (150) years ago.

The Calaveras has a long history of quakes with magnitudes around 5.0. Earlier on Tuesday (October 30) there were a handful of smaller quakes, the largest being 2.9, which were centered near Concord California (Contra Costa County). There were injuries or damage from this smaller quake and only a few people felt the temblor.

Ahh so true, Penny, .I dont like the snow and ice in the winter months in Iowa, but I dont want to deal with the earthquakes, fires, smog and congestive traffic of California, let alone the high cost of living.

Just another something to deal with in paradise!!! You actually get used to the small to midsize ones. But others get used to tornado alerts, flood warnings, hurricanes, fires, etc....we all have something where we live!!!

I hated the earthquakes when I lived in San Diego... it seemed they always decided that when I was in the restroom it was a good time to shake my world....

40 small aftershocks have been recorded since the quake on Tuesday. The strongest of these aftershocks has registered 3.7, while the quake itself registered 5.6 (the strength of the Tuesday Quake is based on the Richter Scale and can be revised upwards as more data comes in.).

The succession of aftershocks seems to indicate that the fault was rupturing southward, which is good news. Most the quakes engergy was being dissipated well away from the Hayward Fault, which has not suffered a major earthquake in 139 years. The Hayward Fault Line has a history of quakes well above 5.0 and the U.C. Berkely Football Stadium is built directly on top of this fault.

I grew up in virginia. After living in california for 5yrs and experiencing the earthquakes and wildfires, I'll take those anyday over snow, cold weather, and rain.

I'll take the hurricanes any day, at least you have ample warning and time to get out of Dodge. Besides I sleep in the nude, wouldn't want to run outside in the middle of the night and make all the neighborhood men feel inadequate.

I'll stay in Michigan thank you very much....a tornado now and then is the worst we get...rain/snow/ice is nothing compared to wildfires/hurricanes/earthquakes.

There was in fact an ordinance passed by the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors after the April 1906 Earthquake that forbid people from sleeping in the nude.

Would have been fun to see how it was enforced.
