My dad just lost $40 in Reno tonight. I wonder if he's going to tell mom.
I play for both money and fun.

It is entertainment, not a sport. It has all the qualities of a sport except physical exertion. Sports are entertainment also but not all entertainment is sports. As far as it being on ESPN....Entertainment Sports Programming Network is their name so it doesn't just relate to sports. Fox Sports is a channel that caters to males, for the most part, and poker is one of those activities that is also male dominant so it is a perfect match to put that type of programming on that channel. If Fox could find a way to put pole dancing and stripping on those channels without the FCC getting on their ass, they would probably do that too! Hell, I'd watch! And I think there would be several ladies from the site here that would enjoy that too!

I'm a very big fan of poker, I play a lot, and I always for money. I also love to watch it on the TV.
I can't see the point in playing the game for no financial reward as the fact that money is riding on it affects the way you play and keeps you in check.
In answer to your question I would say that no poker is not a sport but should be classed as TV entertainment.
There are lots of sports come pastimes that are in that grey area of being a sport or a game. For example chess, darts, pool & snooker.
Many games/activities that are recognised sports should never in my opinion be classed as sports. For example Synchronised swimming & Ice dancing.
If Ice dancing is a sport why then is Ballroom dancing not??

I think it has to do with the competition aspect. If it requires physical exertion and has scoring involved, then it is considered a sport. So, ballroom dancing on a competitve stage, I believe would be considered a sport.

Its a bit of a shame you can no longer enjoy the game unless there is money riding on it.....
It's like saying I can only enjoy chess if I bet on myself to win.

I don't think I would call it a sport.... to me it is more of a sporting game with high stakes. And, yes I do love playing poker.
I play with 6-8 guys lol I just wait until they get drunk then I kick their ass and take all their money!:D

It can be fun to play with drunk and stoned people. The think they are on their game, but you take their chips.
One thing about poker is that you may not be running around with ribbons and such, but it can take allot out of you as you go along. I have been in some events where I was just wiped out afterwards.
And I know about being wiped out, I do Live Steel Combat.

I believe anything that involves competition, someone winning/losing and involve some strategy is a sport.

I enjoy the game more when there is money riding on it because, the fact you have something to gain and something to lose affects your judgement.
It makes you think about your decisions so much more thus making you improve as a player.
If there is nothing to lose the game is completely different and luck becomes a much bigger factor because players will play a much looser game.
If you have nothing to lose you might think seriously about going all in pre-flop with a Queen -Ten at a 6 handed table.
If you win then great you have maybe doubled or possibly tripled your chip stack.
If you lose then its a case of ok never mind better luck next time.
If money was riding on that hand you would think much more seriously about risking your chips in that way therefore making you a better player.

Hear hear.
Now lets see her flop so we can go to the turn.
Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.
Pretty much covers poker I think.

I do not believe it is a SPORT--
Poker to some degree involves BLUFFING--
So if it is a sport it is more of a MIND sport-- and playing HEAD GAMES with the others in the event.

You mean like basketball where you have to fake out the defender to get to the basket? Or like football when the quarterback uses play action to fake out defenders? Or maybe tennis where you try to fake your opponent into thinking your going left instead of right? Or like baseball when the runner trys to bluff the pitcher into thinking he's going to steal a base in order to rattle the pitcher or conversely the pitcher bluffing a throw to the base the runner is on in order to shorten his lead from that base? I think every sport has some degree of bluffing and fakes in order to throw your opponent off. The physical aspect of poker may be suspect to some but try playing from one day to the next. There is some physicallity involved.:55

I must say that Mind games is part of every game. If one looks at it, games and sports is a form of 'warfare', and mind games go wild there.
I remember a great mind game from the 91 World Series where two Twins players faked throwing the ball to second base when neither had it, making the runner stay at first. A great bluff in a great series.

LOL well I'm back from a week of camping in the mountains. I had a great time, tired but a great time. Cooking and cleaning up after 45 people for breakfast and dinner is quite a chore. I did manage to get in some hunting which was a lot more fun than doing the dishes. Just about every night we'de have a poker game, usually 10 people at a table, a few times we had to have two tables of 8. I didn't do too bad this year. LOL lost a good hand on hold em sheesh I get an Ace high staight and wouldn't ya know someone else gets a flush lol and even worse someone ended up with a full house. Yeah I was out of that game pretty quick, but I wasn't the only one lol.
We played a friendly little game of between the sheets. When it was all said and done I was writing a $168.00 check to bail my hubby's ass out of that game. Laffs hell I would have done the same thing, so I didn't give him too much shit about it.;)
We played a lot of beat the bitch, high Chicago, low Chicago, follow the queen, Mexican sweat, 5 card draw, 7 card stud, Dr Pepper, and low ball. Hard to believe you can have a $336.00 dollar pot with a 50 cent max bet. :whee: But, when you have Captain Morgan, Cabo Wabo, Coors Light, Canadian Mist, and Moon shine floating around, someone is bound to lose some money.:D
not sure poker is a sport...but admit i watch the world series of poker more than the world series of baseball.
