Somebody just reactivated the stem cell research thread, which has a significant discussion about government involvement in the process.
I recently listened to a radio talk show discussing how invested the government is in the global warming issue.
I also received a briefing about how the global warming issue will only be resolved when it becomes financially beneficial to do so, that we need to allow the free market to do what it does best - develop and produce new products to meet a specific need - that only when it is fiscally rewarding to put our best minds on the problem will it be resolved. The speaker went on to say that 1) government involvement actually hinders the curing process, and 2) the government has a vested interest in HOW the problem is solved (reflected by the amount of taxes they collect) more than WHETHER the problem is solved.
Government involvement in social and scientific issues --- good or bad?

I think the government has a vested interest in a lot of things, what I worry about the most is what effects our health. Like medication and yes stem cell research. I believe a lot of people in politics use their position to make themselfs money, but don't care how it will effect the masses in general (good or bad)

I think it depends on the issue. Some problems are too large for individuals, corporations or even states to handle. Global warming for example should be a national issue, yet it seems our currrent administration isn't not only doing enough but also is hindering states such as California from doing more.
I agree that profit is the true motivator when it comes to scientific issues so perhaps the government should encourage the research and development of alternative fuels by rescinding the tax breaks given to big oil and and give financial incentives to them and others that would encourage finding new and cleaner sources of power.
Some social issues aren't going to be solved by making their solution profitable. Gay marriage for example. This issue and other "moral" issues is in my opinion, where the government both state and federal should butt out.
On issues that are both scientific and social, for example stem cell research the situation is much more complicated. I think the governments involvement is needed not as a moral compass but to provide parameters to protect us from radical procedures.
To answer the question good or bad? I guess it's good if they are helping to promote action on an issue that you agree with and bad if they aren't.
Stem cells should be made available to the research teams who need them. The cells would be coming aborted fetuses and would be thrown away, regardless. The claim about respect for the unborn doesn't ring true. If the cells are to be treated as rubbish (Which is what will happen, thrown out as hazardous waste), then the better use for the cells is in research. Nancy Regan and others have spoken out in favor of stem cell research. Research into preventable illness is a better use for them. And no, I do not believe that life begins at conception.
Global Warming is real. The polar caps are melting, glaciers are in fact shrinking and the world wide effect of such events cannot be denied, no matter how hard one can try.

Stem cells can be harvested from cord blood and bone marrow...we don't have to use the cells from aborted fetuses.

Bad so very bad....When you decided on a name for your new born child. Then you are told to pick a new name cause the government does not like the name....
Lets be reasonable, its not their child. What do they have to say what is a good name or not??
And where were they when the name Star and Moon was used has a name?
Let the government govern the states and Canada, but leave the day to day affairs to the people!!:nu

Not in sufficient amounts needed to do research. Are you saying throw away the stem cells? How is that any different? On one hand your saying protect life, on the other your saying throw that life away life away because no one wants it.

Stem Cell research is a very tough subject. I believe eventually technology will be there to grow the stem cells. If you think about it there is the moral question about how to get to that technology. If partial human cloning was legal you could grow them to the age of a human fetus and then havest them....The problem there is the life of the fetus point of view to the right to live.
Ok ladies....rant and rave.....

No -- not more info --- is Government involvement good or bad? In what cases is it good? When is it unnecessary?
The Government controlling the thermostats in our houses? Good or bad?
The Government controlling our energy intake by applying onerous taxes? Good or bad?
I won't get into the stem cell issue, because the government never said they couldn't -- it just said they couldn't use federal funds.
The Government establishing curfews? Good or bad?
The Government declaring martial law in New Orleans? Good or bad?
The Government trying to dictate the balance of content on talk radio? Good or bad?
The Government managing the economy by establishing separate rules for Mexican registered trucks? Good or bad?
The Government subsidizing corn farmers so that ethanol can be fiscally competitive with petroleum products? Good or bad?
The Government establishing tariffs on imported products in order to circumvent the law of competitiveness for domestic products? Good or bad?
The Government mandating that colleges must have a certain number of minority students, regardless of qualifications? Good or bad?
The Goverment --- oh hell, it goes on and on --- where do we draw the line? When is some goverment too much government?

I only answered the ones I felt comfortable answering ...the others I don't know enough about.....damit...I'll have to read.

If a mother is going to abort her baby...it should be up to her not the government...what to do with the remains....if she wants to donate the stem cells fine...if she doesn't want to fine.

my thoughts...good and bad..it's the balance that's important..
I have a lot of faith in people that run my government. I live in a good place and have never let paranoia and conspiracy theories rule my train of thought. I have always voted on topics that affect me and not just go with one political party because the other party is for morons. I am comfortable with laws that are implemented to benefit society unless they hinder my beliefs and if not I vote and have my voice heard. I think there is a fine line between freedom and lawlessness.....I have seen a lot of lawlessness and know I'm comfortable with a society governed by rules and regulations.

The government system that we have IS the best in the world because it allows for change. One thing most people don't relize though is that change is a slow process because we have a bunch of really opinionate people in government. But that is why the system works. If we had people that just followed one or a few people it would be more of a dictatorship.
Just as an example look at the oringinal attack after 9/11. Almost all of congress was with the President to go after Al Quada into Afganistan. If this type of procedure happened all the time President Bush could have what ever he wanted. Our fore fathers were correct in haveing congress be able to vote on bills and also be able to even override a presidential veto if they have enough votes.
So, sometimes our government process makes mistakes and sometimes they don't. But at least we have the ability to change things easy than other countries.
