Hank Steinbrenner has provided his share of Boss-like comments in the offseason, his first as one of the principal leaders running the New York Yankees.

He's made verbal digs at former manager Joe Torre and inserted himself during the contract negotiations with Alex Rodriguez, as well as the race for the services of pitcher Johan Santana.

The latest, no doubt, will send Boston Red Sox fans into a frenzy.

Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not.

"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

Being a fan from the land of a small market team (the Minnesota Twins), I don't really mind rooting for the underdogs most of the time. I don't hate any other fans, be them Yankee or BoSox, or what have you. I just like the fact that when my team wins big (including two World Series in the past twenty) it's doing so against teams with multiple times as much money to buy talent and a managerial staff as we do.

Sure, I hate it sometimes when the small markets seem like farm teams to the big n' rich ones. Johan Santana and Torii Hunter will be missed here in Minnesota, for sure.

Hey fellow Twinkies fan! :55

I have always been a Twins fan (even in the dog day 70's when something called Cubbage was our 2nd baseman).

I have to admit I find it very frustrating that pro sports overall, but major league baseball especially, is architected such that the major TV markets have a pre-disposition to win year after year with a lot better odds baked into the system than the casinos have in Vegas.

The media wants a team from NY, LA, Boston and/or maybe only 3 other cities to win, hence this is what the league wants. In their eyes, the rest of the unwashed are there merely to lose to the annointed team and to have local fans that add incremental sales of over priced hats and jerseys.

That's one of the reasons it truly is special when a team like the Twins wins it all. And who knows, Liriano is looking good this spring; we might get there if Joe "The Baby Jesus" Mauer stays healthy this year.

You know -- that's a very valid point. AL ball is truly boring ... very little strategy, no maneuvering. (The last recorded sacrifice bunt in the AL was in 1894, I think!) It explains why a manager like Torre and the dummy in Boston can get by .... they don't have to know anything .... they just have to be yes men to the owner, who goes out, buys a bunch of good players, and then sits in his air conditioned suite and pretends he's got the slightest clue. I expect Torre to get his ass handed to him in the NL West.

As a life long Yankee fan people forget how long we went without even placing in the top of our division. We have the same money as the rest of the teams and the management knows how to take advantage of it. The red sox are an example of what happens when you copy the Steinbrenners of this world. There are a few teams that are finally spending . But we are either loved or hated but the only team that attracts mnore fans nationwide than any other team.

Good point re: City Slickers.

I tried to like "The Natural", but I couldn't believe Redford in that role (1: he looked 50 years old when he was supposed to be the young pup at the beginning; 2: my 101 year old great-aunt even says he threw and swung like a puss).

Another baseball movie that I do like is "Eight Men Out". In both "61" and "Eight Men Out", the players looked like players (especially in "61", where most of the extras were actually major and minor league players).

Always works out that way.. I have a few friends that are Yankees fans.. The rivalry is fun...

Grew up hating the Yankees. Let me restate that: HATING the Yankees.

Actually got to play golf with Al Downing once. He couldn't understand it when i told him I hated him the first half of his career, but loved him the last half.

BTW - Am I the only one who thinks it's a shame that he's not in announcing anymore?

Dodgers - 1 run 0 hits 2 errors

Never seen a no hitter where the team with no hits won the game before.

Yeah, watching those pitchers come up to the plate, hitting .162 for the season, that there is some real excitement. Will he hit it out of the infield?? (Granted there are a couple of pitchers that can hit).

Still waiting for the Freeway Series. Angels just had to make it interesting.

I'm still bummed out because I had tickets to game four of the Dodgers-Cubs and the Cubs couldn't even manage to hang around long enough.

Oh, well. Time to dispatch the Phillies and move on to Anaheim.

Sigh.....you and Kissie and Stella decide which avatar you want me to use and either send it to me to put on or maybe directly to Lena and have her put it on for me (since I don't know what I'm doing, still). You can refer her to my post for permission to do it!!! grrrrrrrrrr

*Lena, would you please put on my avatar the choice that Big O, Kissie and Stella come up with
