View Full Version : Brett Favre Retiring

What a sad day for football enthusiasts. Brett Favre, possible the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, has announced his retirement after 17 years including last year's unbelievable run for the Super Bowl. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions....and 3 MVP awards.
So...who was better?

What a great collection of quarterbacks we are left with in the NFC North:
- TJack (ugh!) in Minnesota
- Konkussion Kitna in Detroit
- Aaron Rogers in GB
- Gross Man in Chitown
Yuck!!!

So...who was better?
If he'd played for a bigger market, no doubt the debate would be over. His numbers alone qualify him for the title, but he was the heart of the Packers' 1990s resurgence, and an all around iron man, to boot. The question is why doesn't he make more writer's top picks?

Sports celebs and their fans are funny...in 2006 everyone wished Favre would retire he was so bad...and then he turns it all around and the fans love him again...same as Eli Manning...everyone was putting him two feet under after the first half of the season...then they all love him again....
Please don't be beside yourselves you cold weather fans out there...in no way am I comparing the two QB's as comparable players.....I'm comparing how they both sucked and then led their teams to the playoffs and beyond.
I'm glad to see older players retire while we can still remember their last year as good...that's the way to go out!

It's sad to hear.........as most of you know I was pulling for the Pats or Greenbay for the Superbowl.Which we all know didn't come to pass, but I know he is one of the best. They're saying they think he will change his mind. He has said he was tired and wanted a break,so who knows, but if it stays, it's sad. I think last season was a awesome season of football all around.

I think there is something that we do in our lives. Live to the fullest, with no regrets!

I was born and raised 90 miles from Lambeau Field, and have been a Packers fan forever.
I won't say Brett Favre was the best quarterback ever --- I'll leave that to others to debate --- but I will say he is unquestionably the best competitor it has ever been my privilege to watch. He brought a joy to the game that was unmatched. Never has there been a connection between a player and the fans like there was between Brett and the Packer faithful. We cheered for him, we cussed him out, we cried for him, we laughed at him, we reveled in his love of the game ... for a little while each week, he reminded that it is, after all, just a game.

I have been and will always be a huge fan of his. His playmaking (and occasional playkilling) ability was fun to watch. Anytime you see a talent like that at the QB position, you can help but admire what he can do. Seeing all he has gone through in his career, from being a loose cannon in Atlanta then being traded to Green Bay, having a dependency on percocets and Budweiser on to where he became a legend with his hometown, good ole boy attitude to the Hall of Famer that he will end up. Thank you, Brett, for a great 17 years, it was fun and you will be sorely missed!

Brett will certainly be missed. He was always a professional in victory and defeat. The thing that sucks the most is that his last professional pass was an interception.
Oh well, can't be perfect all the time.

Will Brett be playing in Miami this year...he wants back in, who didn;t see that coming?
If the man wants to play and has it in him LET him.
If the packers don't want him back they should release him to go wherever he IS wanted.
He is a great player and I don't BLAME him for having second thoughts.

i wouldn't say he was the greatest qb. i just can't believe the packers won't release him. they make themselves look just like the rest of the league and they used to pride themselves on a family organized team like the steelers.

Great player. Possibly best qb to ever play but I think his time has passed. No doubt he can still play and compete but not at the highest level and I think he will be disappointed with the results. I went to college with Brett and have been amazed at his abilities for many years. I just wish he would go out on top and let that be it.

I have to disagree with you on this one. He had a lot of chances to reconsider. It's like announcing your retirement, having a big retirement party, cleaning out your desk, your replacement is hired, and you show up six months later & want your desk back.
It's tough because everyone LOVES him and wants him to be able to retire with Green Bay, but they had been assured he wouldn't return. He's a legend, a great player, a cool guy.....but this is all his ego. I hate to see him pull a Michael Jordan. Make a decision & stick with it.

Farve is a class act on and off the field. He is not the rule in sports today he is the exception.. He isn't flashy or rude...... He doesn't pretend to be something he's not... He plays/played the game because it was his passion not for money.... I have always loved football and Farve became one of my favorite players early on. You watch a man that loves what he does as much as he..... It's inspiring... I will miss watching ole #4...

Bottom line is Star Athlete or not..he's still an "employee" of a franchise. I'm a little tired of the retire and come back on my terms thing. I mean how many times has Roger Clemens "retired" now?? three? Hey, it's a free country and everyone is entitled to change their mind...but you still have stick to your decision and live with the decision you made......meaning I have no problem with you deciding to come back or wanting to play again, but you have to respect that you are still Owned by the people who have been paying you a Bazillion dollars for the last 12 years and once you pull the trigger on your decision you can't expect them to just roll over and do what's in your best interest.

Sorry, but if I own a football franchise worth I don't know how many millions of dollars........am I gonna just release the guy and give him an opportunity to beat MY team?? Yeah, everyone likes the guy and all that....but it's still a business.
That said they will probably just let him go somewhere because of public pressure.

I'm NOT saying I condone his waffling........but for heavens sakes it's a game already. Penalize him if you have to for breaking his contract but it IS still HIS choice. To take that away from him is sad. I've changed my mind before. It's his thing.........get on with it.
As for the million dollar franchise,

You all know he just did not want to go through mini camps.... but now he has realized the wife actually will make him help out more around the house and he has always had peple to wash his jock for him... wants no part of that.
I actually think he should hang em up... its time, if he were to come back in another uni that would be like watching your girlfriend make out with your dad
But him coming back to G.B. is not quite so fair as the franchise has moved forward.... I am certain if they thought he was going to be their starting QB they may have drafted differently...
Just my thoughts

That's all I'm a saying.
I think the team did the RIGHT thing and moved on without him and they SHOULDN'T go back on that decision.
I just think they should release him to play somewhere else.

Oh, it's a public relations nightmare no doubt. They will end up letting him to play wherever he can get a job. Because it would be WAY too much pressure on a new Quarterback to have him on the sidelines waiting to play. The fans will be calling for a change the first time the new guy throws and INT. That said, if they let him go and the Pack sucks this year they will be killing the franchise for letting him go.
It's pretty much a lose, lose situation. He'll go somewhere else and be mediocre.

He said in the paper that he never signed retirement papers with the pack.
He can send in his papers and then the Packers can and will try to trade him. His problem is he wants to pick the team he plays for. The Packers own the rights to him as a player and it would be wrong for them to just let him walk away and not get any value for his services. This is no different than any other great player in the past. He hopes to create a public realations nightmare so they cave in. They held two fan rallies to support him the first one drew 100 people the second 30 people. I have been a fan of his since day 1 but he is wrong on this and is looking very bad.

I have been a Favre fan for years. I think he's one of the greatest to play the game.
Having said that, here's how I see this situation. The last few years the Packers have had to wait and wait each offseason wondering if he was going to play or retire. Signing or not signing papers not withstanding, he made it clear this past season was his last and he was retiring. The Packers moved on and made their plans for the future which did not include him.
Now suddenly he wants back in, throwing a wrench into the team plans. I can see yea or nay arguments on all sides here. I wonder what will happen if Aaron Rodgers gets fed up and demands a trade. It's just an ugly situation all around that need never have occurred if Brett hadn't created it. He's making himself look just as bad as the Packers look in a lot of peoples eyes.
Barkiss
07-16-2008, 04:59 PM
I agree Sarge...
The Packers are in a dilemma. If they welcome back Favre, Rodgers will certainly (and I don't blame him) ask to be traded. How can they trade away their future? On the flip side, how can they trade away their past? Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place....
As for Favre, I can't blame him. He showed he can still play. He still wants to play. More than likely, he and his agent did not prepare for "after-football", like say Strahan, Young, Barber, Aikman all did. Now it is play, or walk away...not sure I could do it, so can't blame him for not doing it.
Personally I'd love to watch him play again, for anyone.

I can not see anyone trading much for Rodgers though.... he has not really done anything playing behind Farve , to many questions, and I still remember the day the poor kid sat through hours of draft coverage before G.B. finally took him... this guy has NO luck. If I am the Pack... as much as i would love Farve back... it could just be time to move on... is one year worth setting yourself back by not getting Rodgers in there... they should have some idea if he is the guy or not by now. Love Farve.... but its a tough spot for the Pack thats for sure.

True, but Green Bay gave Brett the oportunity to do what he loves happily for many years. It goes both ways. He seems to not understand he was a quarterback and not a coach. He was a very valued and loved in Green Bay, I think it's really sad it has to end like this.

The thing is, the GM was doing his job. Brett is not the GM or the owner of the team. He doesn't run the show as much as he would like to. He surly didn't have any of these complaints when he retired....just when he came back.

I'm a huge Favre fan, always have been but at this point, after the long, emotional retirement speech he had a few months ago, the Pack had to figure this was it, along with him signing the papers. From what I have read, he has to petition the league to be taken off the reserved/retired list, since he signed the papers. Once he does that, he then becomes property of the Packers, who then have to decide to release, trade or keep him. I believe the GM stated that they made plans to move on after his speech and they need to consider what is really in the best interest of the organization before doing anything. If anything, they should try and trade him so they can at least get something for him, plus, they can control who he goes to so he doesn't come back and bite them on the ass and beat them. The Green Bay fans would go nuts if he went to Chicago or Minnesota and then came into Lambeau and beat them. The GM would be hung from the nearest tree.
Also, on ESPN radio, I heard today that the league is investigating tampering charges against Minnesota, who supposedly contacted Favre about playing for them. Looks like the football soap opera "As Favre Turns" will have more episodes coming to the airwaves soon.

If anything, they should try and trade him so they can at least get something for him, plus, they can control who he goes to so he doesn't come back and bite them on the ass and beat them..
Exactly!!
I'm a Green Bay fan, and if he did that, I would be really disappointed in HIM. If he did that after all those years he would be spitting in his Green bay fans face.....IMO.

I have to agree with you. You would think that he would have more respect for his career with Green Bay than to do that but he is an emotional guy and when emotions get the best of you, people will do some stupid things. I just hope he actually stays retired. I would hate to see him be one of those also ran's who had a great Hall of Fame career and couldn't just leave the game.
When I think of him just hanging on and playing with a different team, I think of players like Johnny Unitas, who finished his career with San Diego, Tony Dorsett, who ended up playing in Denver, Ken Stabler, who couldn't give it up and played a few more years with the Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints. Although most people don't remember that stuff, the hard core fans, like myself will always feel like they tarnished their image.

Another one that was sad to watch was Jerry Rice, maybe the greatest receiver ever to play. He kept hanging on and hanging on until he was gonna be the fourth or fifth receiver on the roster.
I know Brett can still play, but sometime you gotta go. I hope he doesn't end up like the above mentioned players. That would be sad.

If Peyton doesn't come back for the 1st game I certainly wouldn't mind having Favre over Sorgi.

WHO CARES!! I'm so sick of the Brett Favre soap opera..... There are so many other great stories that ESPN ignors so that they can keep us up to the minute on Brett Favre...... Not that many people really care.

Living in Wisconsin it is non stop on our radio and tv day and night. Now I just want him to go away and I don't care where.
