New Wave: Adam Ant, Billy Idol (White Wedding)
Rock: AC/DC (Shook Me All Night Long), Pat Benetar
R&B/Rap: Kool and the Gang, KC and the Sunshine Band (That's the Way, Uh Huh, I Like It) S.O.S Band, Sugar Hill Gand (White Lines), Beastie Boys, they are still a fav of mine.

There you go. Have fun.

There are sooo many, great thread.

1. Love Is A Battlefield - Pat Benatar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9J9rTZJBmw

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong, no one can tell us were wrong
Searchin our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

Youre beggin me to go, youre makin me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing youve had?
Believe me, believe me, I cant tell you why
But Im trapped by your love, and Im chained to your side

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us were wrong
Searchin our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

Were losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
Theres no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, youll need me to hold

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us were wrong
Searchin our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us were wrong
Searchin our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

Friends of mine band used to play this even better, IMHO

2. Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB3b1W6rEDw

You get a shiver in the dark
Its been raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring

You step inside but you dont see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth london town

You check out guitar george he knows all the chords
Mind hes strictly rhythm he doesnt want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

And harry doesnt mind if he doesnt make the scene
Hes got a daytime job hes doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for friday night
With the sultans with the sultans of swing

And a crowd of young boys theyre fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They dont give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It aint what they call rock and roll
And the sultans played creole

And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
thank you goodnight now its time to go home
And he makes it fast with one more thing
we are the sultans of swing

My favorite was (and is) The Replacements.

They provided the primary soundtrack for the entire 80's for me (Which probably makes sense, as they also were Minnesota kids my age, going through the same things at the same time that I was).

From the angry, adolescent punk songs like "F@#k School" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" of the early 80's, the confused teen songs like "Sixteen Blue" and "Androgynous", the college-aged disillusioned songs "Bastards of Young" and "Here Comes Another Regular", to the real-world experiences described in "Sadly Beautiful" and "Darlin' One" at the close of the 80's.

Although the Replacements broke up in 1989, their lead singer Paul Westerberg has seemingly continued to write and sing about "grown-up" (?) Fargo's life, experiences, hopes and dreams in the 90's and 00's.

80's Geez, did any truly great bands actually originate in the 80's?
Let's see.... Van Halen kind of ruled the 80's although actually a 70's band, they were to the 80's what Elvis was to the 50's, The Beatles were to the 60's and Led Zeppelin was to the 70's, and what Milli Vanilli was to the 90's. OK that last part was a joke. Most of the bands that ruled the 80's were actually rooted in the 70's, any of the good ones anyway.

for us Aussies: AC/DC

Not just for Aussies...every good memory at a school dance I owe to an AC/DC song (usually "Shook Me All Night Long" or "Back in Black")

Anyone who's spent 15 minutes in the chatroom when I'm there knows of my abiding fondness for 80s music. ;) Like, totally awesome thread, gdgrl, y'know? Omigod!!! :lmao

The Sisters of Mercy.

PROPER Gothic Rock, none of this eyeliner-ridden whining emo-crap.

We serve a man in the dry season,
A lighthouse keeper in the desert sun.
Dreamers of secrets and white treason,
We dream of rain and the history of the gun.

There's a lighthouse in the middle of Prussia,
A White House in Red Square.
And we're living in films for the sake of Russia,
A kino-runner for the DDR.

And the fifty-two daughters of the Revolution
turn the gold to chrome.
Gift.
Nothing to lose.
Stuck inside of Memphis where the mobile homes sing:

Mother Russia!
Mother Russia!
Mother Russia
rain down, down
down!

And the Devil in a black dress watches over.
My guardian angel walks away.
Live is short and love is always over in the morning.
Black wind come, carry me far away...

Michael Jackson yeah yeah, but i truly loved Thriller
Air Supply (not sure if they are an 80's band, but they were big in the 80's here, especially when you had to cry a good cry)
Bon Jovi (They still rock!!!)

Oh yeah... the 80’s…

The first band I really went nuts over was Twisted Sister. I bought Stay Hungry the summer when I was 12 and kept it hidden under my bed cause that stuff was devil music.

I think I wore that tape out by the time school started. By that time Iron Maiden had become the new greatest band ever.

In junior high, Motley Crue was mandatory--everybody loved that band. Ratt, Poison and Bon Jovi were also really popular. I tried really hard to like Van Halen since they, along w/ the Grateful Dead, were cool bands that cool people listened to.

But I’m not cool. I never could get into either one of 'em.

My freshman year in highschool, I went through several favorite bands: Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallaca, Jethro Tull, Guns N’ Roses, Dokken (anyone remember them?). Ozzy and Motorhead all briefly held the title of BEST BAND EVER. Then that summer I found the Ramones 1st album in a Wal-Mart bargain bin, bought it because the cover looked cool, and had a musical religious experience. I totally got into the punk rock thing.

For the rest of the 80’s the bands I was into were: the Ramones, Black Flag, Social Distortion, the Replacements, the Circle Jerks, Operation Ivy, the Misfits…and a lot of others. It’s pretty much the same stuff I listen to now, along with some of the newer punk bands.

One thing I’ve noticed is that as I get older, it gets harder and harder to find new bands that don’t suck.

Ahhh, the 80's...high school days, keg parties at the blinking light...we were a strange bunch and listened more to older stuff...60's and 70's, but for us, they were our 80's bands...The Doors, Santana, Yes....throw in several concerts to see Journey, the Police, Genesis...they were my 80's bands.
