I am not sure if anyone is interested or not, but I feel like sharing my son's journey to Parris Island with all of you...

Today is Wednesday. He is actually enjoying his last days of freedom before boot camp on a trip to Pensacola with two of his good friends from high school...

I have printed up a calendar of what he is doing while in boot camp... I want to share it with you all as his journey begins....

I hope nobody minds... but I think this will help me... I have been very emotional about this since he signed up...

I'm with you scoobs I would love to here about his military adventure. As I am sure your boy has left home and will return a man. From my own experience the bootcamp process is a difficult journey, but the lessons learned will benifit he forthe rest of his life. I wish you and him well and may he stay safe and well and return home to a proud mom soon. Cant wait to hear more

Soon Scoob, you will be like the mother of a new marine I take the train with every morning. Bursting with pride! She shares his stories as he grows in mind and spirit. Her expressions have gone from sad to worried to proud. She is watching him turn into an amazing young man and leader. Each day he is more and more proud to be a marine and she is more and more proud to be his mother. She knows darker days may loom, but she also knows he is well prepared. More than she could have ever hoped. It's truly an amazing thing to see.

I look forward to hearing about his adventures. Stay strong!

Hey Tina. Please keep up posted. I would love to hear about him.
My son is going to Northeastern for a degree in criminology. Last week he told me that during his summer break next year he is going to attend a ten week course with the Marines to see if he qualifies for officer school. If he qualifies then he goes back to school, finishes his degree and then joins the Marines and attends school with them. it would be like going to the Naval Acadamy.

Letting go of our children in the real world is hard...they are always apart of us and we carry them wherever we go.

My ex called... Jr climbed on board the bus at 2 o'clock today... my ex said he had to wait until he got to the house to call because he was tearing up and honestly when he left the message I could hear it... This is finally it... he has left for Boot Camp... I imagine he is on the way there now and tonight who knows... I am clueless how the next few days are going to be for him.. any insight anyone? I do know that he is going to be shaved soon and I can't wait to hear from him...

I took yesterday off so I could spend some me time coping with finally being completely alone..

I woke up yesterday to a text from the ex... Jr called home at 0111 and said that he had arrived at Parris Island and he was good.. We probably won't hear from him again for 7 - 10 days..

A very good friend of mine told me yesterday that I will get a letter from him soon..

So, I am looking at the calendar that I have and I believe he is still in recieving.. I am not exactly sure but I need to find out for sure... I think he actually starts his training next week on tuesday but I may be wrong... he may actually be doing all his training now... sigh.. I need to go back to the website and figure it out..

I am very proud of him and most of my nervousness about him leaving me has gone now.. I want to thank those of you who were able to walk beside me through this time in my life... and for those of you who couldn't.... sorry if I made your life miserable..

Thank you Red, I am doing so very good lately... I am less stressed and more comfortable with myself again... I am still anxious about August but this is a good step for me... I still have you all here...

I missed yesterday so I am going to tell everyone what he did yesterday and what he is doing today...

On Wednesday they were doing Combat Conditioning, Punches, Customs and Courtesies....

Today they are doing.... Combat Conditioning, Bayonet Tech, First Aid 1, and USMC Uniforms...

It sounds like he is getting a real workout in basic.... again thanks for the support everyone has given me.... I am doing so much better... I am calmer... I am more at ease with myself...

awww thank you redV... I am doing sooooo much better... the stress has almost all gone away... most of my fears were losing my friends over the summer but those fears were based on past experiences... and I needed to let myself relax and trust finally in someone again..

So, today what is Jr up to?

He is doing some more Combat Conditioning, USMC History, and Core Values Training... sounds boring but I know my son will be loving the combat conditioning... he is very fit and ready for this...

Anniegeee gave me a wonderful idea today....

some things I miss about my son...

when he was little he used to wake me in the mornings by just standing next to the bed staring at me...

he was terrified of bugs... I took him to camp with me for most of my camp life and the first summer no matter where we were in camp, we could hear him scream at the top of his lungs at every bug that landed on him....

when he was tired and sitting on my lap he would pick at the hair on my arms...

he used to stuff socks in his mouth when he was just learning to crawl and bite down and shake his head... I won't tell you why I weaned him early... just know it was painful....

You just made me remember something long-forgotten from my own youth...I was scared of butterflies...of all things. My Dad would catch them in his hands and try to get me to hold them, but for some weird reason (is there a shrink in the house?) I freaked. I'm over it now, thank you!

And as for your last para...I'm glad men don't nurse!

Hey Mom,

Glad to hear things are going ok with you. To be completely honest I wish I could just run home and do something with camp and cars for the rest of my life! Today was terrible and I've been sick the whole like 3 weeks here. Worst thing is theres still a guaranteed 2 weeks of this then if the platoon doesn't get it together it culd be another 2 1/2 months of this! I very stronly believe I'm stopping at four years unless I get out at boot. LOL. I may do reserves, I don't know though. But definitely being here I realized even though I could do this easily, it doesn't seem to be my true calling. I think I should have enjoyed life for a few years before this shit. Oh well, I'm here now and pretty much can't leave til I graduate or break a major bone. Anyway, I miss you lots, mustang too...

Love you more, Mikey

Hey again! I hope this gets to you before you leave for home. Enclosed is a very basic blueprint for A NEW RIDE CAR!! Anyway it's TD-12 and my migrains from 8th grade are returning hardcore, I am starting to think they are stress reltaed. I'm supposed to have a phone call tonight, I'm calling dad because I'm not sure if you'll have signal. But yeah we have it very busy and still more stress everyday, I'm too young for this. Hope things are going well and love you lots. I definately know if I graduate I'm in for only 4 years its not my..... destiny I guess you could say.

I am home now and got two letters...

letter 1

Hey Mom!
Ok so I have pink eye now... Yay... things are better today I talked to the senior DI he just told me stuff I already knew. We had MCMAP again today (chokes and blocks, nothing new) LOL, but the Instructor of the class got me thinking and I think things will be good for the remainder of boot. We have swim week here in 2 weeks I think, the 25th, then grass week, followed by rifle qual, BWT, and crucible. Once Phase-1 is done it should all come together. Also there this EZboard.com it has pictures and such, discussion on boot for parents and friends. Please let me know how Mustang is doing. Dad said he was going to fix his hip, I hope he did. I miss yall. Hey get Seana to write my ass too! But yeah, you can send stuff like power bars for like 80 or just hde two ar ethree really good... stamps stuff like that pictures even. I think the firs thing I do after drag is take yall to dinner and EAT LOTS.
Love ya, Mikey ------>
P.S. If you write daily or get more people to write I would appreciate it much..

scoobertina

the second letter....

Hey Mom, I 'm going to try to write as often as possible. TD-15 we lost power and I have pink eye. I am not allowed in the chow hall or sandpit for 2 days. 2 weeks till swim qual and rifle qual! I'm already 25% done!! This means in about 60 days or less you get to see me in Marine attire. Haha. I do however stll think I should have gone Navy... maybe I;ll get some college and switch service and officer... hummm... Anyway miss ya.

Love, Mikey

P. S. 4 years active the I'll come live with you for a year or so LOL BTW I still haven't heard from Dad.

Like you Scoob, I went to Navy boot camp. I thought we had it tough til I watched through the fence and saw the Marines running their recruits through their paces at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. Made me glad I joined the Navy. I'm sure your son will have an attitude of pride and accomplishment once his training is completed. As you well know, the military may have it's draw backs but anyone who serves will learn life lessons not taught in school that will benefit them the rest of their lives.

I remember writing some letters to my brother when he was in the Army. I looked forward to getting them from him and although he lives in Hawaii, and has for the past 25 years, we are very close. It's a bond we will always have no matter how far, distance wise, we are apart from one another. As my brother is in my eyes, your son is a hero to me. To join the Armed Forces in this day and age is a 100% selfless act. For him to see what is going on in the world today and want to step and join shows what a tremendous MAN he is. You have done a great job with him, Scoob. I know you are proud of him and he deserves the adoration. Tell him Thank You from me. I have the utmost of respect for all service members. :wy

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/smileys/smurf.gifWe are at the beginning of Week 5 -- and you guys thought you wouldn't even make it this far....
http://lorivann.zandalea.net/happy029.gif http://lorivann.zandalea.net/happy029.gif Today is a big day!!!
They will start off the day will Initial Testing -- a multiple guess test on all the classes they have had so far in training. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/bootcamp/studying.gif
The recruits will also get to test out the rappell tower http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/military/th_airborne.gif Then it is on to the gas chamber!!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/bootcamp/gas_mask.gif
They will get a class on the gas chamber and the gas mask and how to properly wear it and use it. Then they all line up outside the gas chamber with their masks properly strapped to their waist in the pouch. Just before entering the gas chamber they will put it on and make sure they have a good seal around their face. Then they will file in to the gas chamber and watch as the NBC tech breaks open some tablets of CS gas (tear gas) on the little burner. Once the fizziling has stopped then they all have to take a deep breath and hold it and close their eyes and lift their masks up to their foreheads so that all the DIs and Series Commanders can see everyones eyes (closed still) sometimes this can take a little bit if one of the recruits has a problem. Once they see everyones eyes they allow them to "Don and Clear their masks" (put them back on and clear the gas out by making a good seal again). They then turn and grasp the shoulder of the person in front of them and play follow the leader to the outside of the chamber. Once outside they can take off their masks and air out a little. But meanwhile the CS has really opened their sinuses and they definitely are not a pretty sight as they come out of the chamber with tears and runny noses that are involuntary. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/smileys/eyepop.gif

Of course they will all try to squeeze in some practice drill some more for TOMORROW!!!! Follow Series will also get ANOTHER http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/smileys/jaw-drop.gif hair cut!!

LOL.. I love using what other people post for me... wooohoooo less typing on my end....

Hey Ma,

You;ll probably notice my handwriting reallys sucks today, well thats because I got fucked up for 15 - 30 min by my DI for something somebody did in the chow hall to him when I wasn't even near. So basically on my getting to actually go to the SDI when I was supposed to be having Core Value time with the platoon. I punched a stantion twice possibly breaking up to 3 of my knuckles, this is not even close to being worth the bullsit. Then on top of it he told me he wanted to see my in a bodybag by tonight. To save my SDI's career I shouldn't say this but you need to know the kind of shit I am putting up with, nothing changes anywhere I go. I always put out 110% and get fucked up for no fucking reason. I'm sick of the shit. and the best part is it only gets worse... Yay...

I just found this on the ezboard site... from the SDI of my son's platoon...

Hello families once again. This week, we competed in Initial Drill and first phase testing. The platoon performed very well at drill, but made some minor mistakes. We ended up third. They could have done better, but I'm still proud of how they performed. In testing, all of them passed and the platoon had the highest overall average. Saturday, we have another hike. (7.5 miles) The boys have done very well on the others, so I'm not worried about this one. Monday, we begin grass week. The boys will have 5 long days of learning Marine Corps marksmanship training. I'm expecting really good things from the rifle range.

TD30 Monday
Today is the beginning of Grass Week. It is called Grass Week because the recruits literally spend a lot of time down on the grass learning how to position themselves and their rifles for best firing results. This week is spent learning the intricacies of their rifles and the factors that go into accurate firing of these weapons. You may have heard that "Every Marine is a Rifleman." Not only is that so but every Marine is a pretty darned good shot, too-- they will fire next week from 200, 300 and 500 yards in order to qualify on the range. Pretty impressive. http://www.lorivann.zandalea.net/army.gif

To get them ready for this the recruits will receive extensive instruction from Parris Island's PMIs (Primary Marksmanship Instructors) beginning today. These guys REALLY know their stuff and they'll be working with the recruits to get them prepared. They will have the entire week this week to practice positions and learn from the PMI. When the time comes for actual firing there will also be many range coaches out there to advise the recruits and help them make adjustments, etc. So while this process is challenging to say the least, the recruits will have a wealth of information and reliable guidance at their disposal to help them be successful.
(By the way, in addition to the PMIs and coaches their DIs will be there and they are no slouches themselves! ).http://lorivann.zandalea.net/di.gif
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/images/military/rifleman.jpg

TD31 Tuesday
Grass Week continues today.

More classes on firing and the rifle range itself this includes the stances that they must use next week (sitting cross legged, kneeling, standing, and prone - on their belly). There are specific ways that they must hold the weapon so this can become a challenge to any recruits who went to boot camp thinking they could shoot because they have been hunting before. It all works out in the end though. If they already know how to shoot it can be a better more accurate way to shoot and if they have never even held a gun before boot camp (like me) then they get the basics too.

Today they will also get to spend some time in the ISMT (indoor simulated Marksmanship Trainer) and see how they shoot using a computerized program. They use a rifle that is about the same weight attached to a cable that is connected to the computer and they fire at electronic targets and can get an instant feedback on their shots. It can even show them how much they were moving before the shot... They will also be learning how to make adjustments on their rifle for them since each weapon and shooter are different, they have to adjust it to how they shoot. Then they will also get to fire their rifle finally in a grouping exercise to make sure that their weapon is adjusted just for them. Overall, they will spend all this week in many agonizing hours perfecting these positions aiming at that silly barrel (http://news.webshots.com/photo/2558580570086333469yIeEUB) and images of targets painted on the squadbay walls so that next week they will not be as sore in these new positions and they will also have the proper position that the USMC is a stickler about when firing for qualification.

Grass Week will continue today for the recruits.
They will be having more classes on the positions and have plenty of "snap-in" time to make sure those positions are up to snuff. They will be learning more about the course of fire that they will shoot and how to prepare for the rapid fire, to include some drills while snapping in. I know they absolutely loved the ISMT yesterday and the competition between the platoons is already getting fierce for who will take that rifle range trophy home next Friday!!! Grass Week continues today with more instruction on the rifles and how to do the positions correctly. Are you getting tired of the same thing yet? http://lorivann.zandalea.net/happy029.gif They will also get some more time in the ISMT (indoor simulated marksmanship trainer) today especially the ones that had some trouble the first day.

They will continue working hard as they head into Firing Week.

Everyone has been great in their support and I don't want you to get discouraged if you don't get many letters this week or next they are pretty busy with classes and practicing all the time when not in classes. This is most recruits favorite point in training and they want to get those crossed rifles (Expert). Continue to send those letters to them though and make sure you tell them that you think they are the bestest in the world.

The latest letter from Jr.

Hey Mom,
Glad you ............. We got some of your bars the other night, amazing btw. We start grass week this week. I'm gonna see if I can get in the Color Guard for graduation. I loved the gas chamber and repel tower. My Drill Instructor just had me cut out the schedule up to Grad. I can't wait. My Senior is messing with me about telling me to keep you off him at Graduation and all.. LOL. As far as the 10 days I'm gonna try for recruiters assistance and go another 7 days. I will be expecting chocolate chip pancakes first morning though LOL. Can't wait to see you, dad, Seana, and Josh.

Much Love,
-Mikey

This schedule is of course subject to change due to weather, holidays and the needs of the company.

TD36 Monday
Well unfortunately this week may be kinda monotonous http://lorivann.zandalea.net/happy029.gif
Now for the Daily Schedule:
This morning, they will learn how to operate the pits (where the targets are behind the berm). They all have to take turns in running the targets up and down. No, they are not in the 21st century yet, it is all manual labor.... Then they will finally get to start firing. They will run the entire course of fire (called the Known Distance course or the KD course for short).
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/sesmest/rich/range/tn_DSC00505.jpg
KD course:
200 yd line
20 mins for 5 rounds in sitting, 5 rounds in kneeling, & 5 rounds in standing
1 min for 10 rounds (5 in each magazine) in sitting
300 yd line
5 min for 5 rounds in sitting
1 min for 10 rounds (5 in each magazine) in prone (on belly)
500 yd line
10 min for 10 rounds in prone

Don't get me wrong it can take a lot longer than the 37 min above.... the Platoons are divided into relays probably 6 (three relays shoot the entire KD range and the other three relays are in the pits running the targets....then they switch). Plus you have to figure in the walking time between the yd lines.... The rifle range is not a quick process.

Later in the afternoon, of course some snap in time or drill practice time.

1 month, 1 week, 1 day until Jr is a Marine!

And a note from the SDI!

Hello once again families. This has been a good week for the platoon. We spent all week learning the ins and outs of rifle marksmanship. They fired the simulator twice and their groups were really good. If it was any indication of how next week will go, the boys will do just fine. On Saturday, they boys ran their mid cycle PFT. Circumstances weren't right for all of them, but almost all of them did just fine. I didn't drop any recruits.
I don't know who said they won't be honor platoon, because they have not had any of the events that count towards that. The range is the first event. They have as good of a chance as any of them, maybe better, since they are easily the most disciplined platoon in the company. ( My drill instructors may be playing with them.)
As far as my pick ups from Alpha company, they have molded right into the platoon. They actually were one of the reasons the boys did as well as they did on the initial testing. Assuming nothing tragic happens between now and Oct 11, these 82 young men will march across the parade deck with me.

Complete with practice scoring ... that can be dangerous though, because the good shooters sometimes get cocky and the not so good shooters get discouraged. I have never been so crazy about letting my shooters know what they shot on pre-qual. I hope you guys have been sending lots of encouragement -- it means a great deal to them I know. They should also be getting another haircut and also study some for that big final test that they have coming up as a graduation requirement.

Thanks for the pictures. I miss you and 'stang. Uh the keys I have no clue, but don't try the Bronco its missing a piece to the carb. Man I wish I worked this summer. This place has officially sickend me. LOL.. It's Aug. 31 and I woke up this morning all cool dreaming and as soon as I opened my eyes my heart and spirit dropped. We begin shooting tuesday then we prepare to get broke down at Basic Warrior Training and the Crucible. After Grad I have MCT at either Lejuene or Florida I don't remember. so needless to say I;m going to enjoy my 10 days of leave. We have enough gatorade and powerbards here but you can stock up on some at home... the Milk Chocolate Brownie kicked ass.. LOL.. but all in all I miss, Everything, and you know if I dgo without something its usally no biggy, well its a big deal now to not be able to take a little time to get dressed properly. I'm powering through though, thinking of you, dad, seana, and 'stang...

Well, now with the rifle range under their belt, it is all downhill from here. Yippeee!!
Well they are back in their regular squadbays at their Battalions now after the range yesterday so they are "home." They will start off the day with a short 1.5mi run then do some of those combat conditionin exercises they have come to know so well and then another short 1.5mi run to work on their endurance. Then in the afternoon they will have some classes on leadership and then they all will also get to go the museum! http://www.lorivann.zandalea.net/army.gif

Speaking of which I highly recommend visiting it while you are here. It lays out the history of the Marine Corps approximately decade by decade since 1775. It has some awesome artifacts as well as video footage. The gift shop there is very good as well and has items you can't find anywhere else (including online or elsewhere on base even!) and the DI from 1970s Rose Garden USMC recruiting poster works there and will autograph a poster for you if you like!!!http://www.lorivann.zandalea.net/army.gif Which is awesome!

from the SDI today

Hello again families. This has definitly been an interesing week. One of the most interesting I've had this cycle. Friday didn't go as well as hoped, we had a few that didn't quit make it. The rest of the company didn't do any better. With all of the curcumstances involved, I believe the boys did really good. Fortunately, the ones that didn't make it on Friday will have all of next week to get there. They will all be fine. Saturday, we had our 7.5 mile hike. The boys did great and even though tired, they were all motivated at the end. They are ready to finish this and move on.
I have to apologise about not getting the pictures loaded up on Myspace. With the same curcumstances that affected the range, I have been anable to get it done. I will try to do it now.

You would be surprised at what you are capable of really. The whole point of boot camp is to create a really stressful environment which both builds morale (misery loves company) and shows you how much discomfort you can handle.

And it isn't even what it used to be... when I went through there were no stress cards... my Company Commanders were in my face whether they had good breath or not... I did so much physical stuff that when I came out of boot camp my clothes didn't fit right... and don't get me started on the mental stuff that they put you through...

As much as people that it may be "too tough" to put troops through the mental and physical exhaustion that they put them through, it is needed. The average person doesn't realize how much they can take and physically accomplish until they actually have to do it so these drills are used to get the soldiers to understand their tolerance levels and give them the confidence they will need on the battlefield, in the trenches, where the enemy won't show any compassion.

My brother, a little over a year ago, recently retired after 25 years in the Army. He was in Delta for the past 10+ years and he has told me stories about how much stress and strain he has had to endure and still get his job done, it is amazing. He is my hero.

TD42 Monday **Start of Team Week**
Well this is another one of those boring post weeks...

Team week is a time for the recruits to get caught up on any testing they need (swim qual upgrade if required by their MOS or qualify on the range so they don't get dropped in training). But since not everyone needs to do that, the rest of them work around base in small groups doing odd jobs. Cleaning up the classrooms, working at the visitor center making things spic and span, working at the base laundry -- where their cammies are washed, etc. It is a nice break in their routine of hustle and bustle everywhere! The small unit field training will occur at MCT or SOI.
Today they are supposed to have:
~ rifle re-qualification for those that need it
~ upgrades in swim qualifications for those that need it for their MOS
~ work around the base in teams of about 5-10 recruits doing odd jobs for different offices, laundry and even the pool
~ Some will also have to go to dental if they are on the "hit list" for teeth pulling or fillings or cleanings.

This week is a nice break from the go, go, go, of the daily routine.

The Crucible is something that is pretty recent (past several years) and it is an extended field exercise. It's 54 hours and it is essentially a bunch of small tests rolled into one big exercise. IIRC they get their EGA right after this event. I will be really interested in reading about that one.
