I have been to ~ 20 countries and I have heard my share of "here's why I hate America" in about 1/3 of them. I have heard about 50x more of these comments in in North American (65:35 split between US and Canadians).

Well, I have to admit: I love the U.S.!

I love the fantastic things it has/will produce, the amazing people I have met in every state I visited (still have ~ 10 visit), our f@#$ed up past, our f@#$ed present and future and even the affect that America as had on the rest of the world.

If you hate America, save it for another thread.

If you love America, state why here!

We are free to speak our mind, we are free to think the way we want to, to worship the way we want to...

we have rights no other country has... we are such a hodgepodge of people we have learned to get along with anyone...

The people here are amazing.. I love this great land of ours...

We take it for granted and if you dont believe me head on over to the Obama thread and read for a while. Our country was founded on the idea that everyone has rights. We are the best of the best and we got that way through hard work and wars and struggle and love. We were made into a great nation and I love the USA for all the lives that were lost, all the people who fought to make it great and for all the people who work everyday to keep it great. I and my children will never take for granted what we have in this great nation.

Great thread Fargo.

I love the U-S-A because we still place our faith in the individual and not the state.

I love the U-S-A because we are transparent enough to admit when we've screwed up and take responsibility for it. It might not happen as quickly as we would like, but it always happens, eventually.

I love the U-S-A because individuals are allowed to pursue their own definition of happiness, even if that definition annoys the crap out of me. I used to get riled up and think, "That guy is wasting his time/money/whatever." Now I just chant "U-S-A".

I love the U-S-A because a person is allowed to fail as many times as necessary to succeed. My observation of other countries is that the systems are skewed towards maintaining the status quo. If you had a misspent youth and didn't make the cut at the right time in other countries, too bad. In the U-S-A, it's often times those with the misspent youths that end up making great contributions because they're not afraid of failure.

One need only look at what's going on right now in China. Dissent is illegal. There is no such thing as a free press. And yet people here in America talk as if we are in the country on earth.

Yet, in less than 3 months Americans will go to the polls and select the person we want to lead our country for the next 4 years. There won't be any violence. There won't be a military coup. Just citizens exercising their right to vote. A right people in many countries don't have.

At this moment the country is divided on alot of issues and people are passionate about them on both sides. But no matter how this election turns out and how the next leader of our country decides to tackle these issues, this is still the greatest nation on earth. If it wasn't then there wouldn't be so many people trying to get here both legally and illegally every day.

I have visited America numerous times. Up until now I have only visited the east coast but plan to be in Vegas for my 40th Birthday. I constantly seem to be defending the USA from ill-informed people who 9 times out of 10 have never even been there.

The standard yank bashers in the UK tend to form their opinions from watching some satirical humour on the TV about George Bush or the War in Iraq. They haven't got a clue about what the American people are really like.

When I have visited America, each time it has struck me how respectful people are to each other. Respect comes across so naturally it is a pleasure to witness. This is something that is sadly lacking in Britain.

I love the way Americans are so patriotic. The flag is everywhere you look and rightly so.

I bet you didn't know this, but in England it is against the law to fly the Flag of St George from your house so as not to offend certain minorities that may have suffered centuries ago when Britain was building it's empire.

I could go on and on and will probably post again in this thread as things come to mind.

You should be proud of your great country and even though you have a relatively young nation compared to mine, my country could do with following your lead on many things.

Come to South Florida and see the great melting pot of South and Central America, Cuba and the Carribean countries. Why does everyone want to live here? Opportunity! Freedom!

i served this nation i live in for 8 years in the armed forces and seen 15 countries on 3 continents. i've served with other military forces and most had an just an attitute about them (minus england, they got what service meant)
I also noticed even the free countries you were not as free.. you are not free in europe to do things that may be offensive. this may seam like a good thing, but it's gone extreme.

health care is better no where in the world.
we are the most generous nation per capita in the world. both for our own brothers and sisters at home, and abroad.
we are honest with the world. like it or not, if we say we are or may be doing someting we are, or may.

i could go on, but that apple pie and sweet tea on the front porch are a good start.
God bless the usa.

I love America because I am free do be who I am. I can choose to believe in Jesus. There are so many men that risk their lives to protect their country. I would never know what it would be like to not have these things. My heart goes out to the families that have a loved one way from home protecting us. I am so thankful that I don't have to know the pain and fear they must feel.

Last week I was in Iceland and attended the parade that was held in honor of the Silver medal winning Icelandic handball team (yes, I know, it's a sport that nearly no one from North America has ever heard of). Afterward, there was a ceremony and concert at which 10% of the entire country's population attended, from newborns to senior citizens.

The next day, an Icelander who boycotted the event was shocked to find out I went. Another Icelander asked me my thoughts on it and I said "I think it was great. Anytime people can get together to celebrate, instead of only getting together during times of hardship and/or tragedy the better."

The first guy then said "Well, I think it's terrible. We could have spent the money used on the parade to help out a little girl who can't afford to go to the U.S. to receive experimental drug treatment. Instead, the government used it to put some athletes up on a pedestal. And, of course it's all because the politicians want to use it to further themselves."

My response was "Look, the fact that a small few may take advantage of something good, doesn't mean discount that it is still worthy. There was a little 1 1/2 year old in front of me on the hill with his finger in the air, chanting 'Eees-lunn! Eees-lunnn!' along with everyone else, and in his mind he received confirmation that anything is possible. And as long as he can/does believe that, than it becomes true for him: anything IS possible! And because of that belief, that little boy growing up in a little country may be the one to find a cure to the little girl's illness when he gets bigger."

"Oh you American, the thing that p!$$es me off most about you, is that you are all so g-d@mn optimistic!""

And I (almost) agree with him: one of the things that I love most about the U.S. is that we are so g--d@mn optimistic! And we are too "ignorant" to know that we can't be the ones to achieve whatever it is that needs to be achieved.

The generosity and uncontrived compassion that so many Americans have for each other and others around the world. The percentage of people across the country that genuinely have good hearts is awesome and inspirational.

I have lived in Germany for 5 years. I've spent a few weeks in japan. I've been to China. I've been to mexico(heck, lived in the southwest for 20 years). I've been to italy. In each of those countries I met great people, and had great food.......But in the USA, I eat German food on Mon, Japanese on Tues, Mexican on Wed, Chinese on thurs, and Italian on Friday. The USA is blessed with the best the world has to offer, but so many are too blind to see it.

I am an Asian Canadian who has worked in large International Collaborations involving the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, British, Germans, French, Italians, Dutch, Belgians, Czech, Argentinians, Mexicans....etc.

I love working with Americans because they are straight-shooters and keep the political games to a minimum (in the U.S., politics is by-in-large "the art of the possible"...rather than a school-boy game played to one-up others...

And the U.S. is still mostly a meritocracy...

America has the BEST music. And why is that? Why haven't the french dominated the world with their artistry?

I travel to Germany frequently, and I always look for bars with live music. Do you know what kind of music they play? Not german music. They the play our songs from the 60's and 70's. What's even funnier, is that even the germans who can't speak english, know the words to those old songs.

Ya, America has a lot of greatness.

Try to fill up your gas tank in europe. They'll try to fool you with "eurodollars" and "liters." But even at $4/gallon, it's cheaper here.

Oh, and try to park a car that's bigger than a shoebox. No pimp-mobiles there!
