Well let's don't split hairs here!
When you go out to eat, what do you say is acceptable and unacceptable service? Do you let the server know that they did a good job by letting their manager know, tip better or just go on your way? When do you let them know that the service was unacceptable. Do you tell them or do you ask for the manager?

I'm lucky... In Australia we never really tip... never ...if the service sucks you know never to go back there...
In Thailand only tourists are expected to tip{suckers}.. but in some restaurants they do bend over backwards and I'll always tip a women who can do that for me. I also earn a lot more than they do so its easy for me to leave a few dollars behind...
as for telling the manager...I only do if I need to complain.. but I haven't complained in a long time... I bet that was of little use to you

When chris and I go out we rarely tip anymore, the service of some places is poor, but we mainly go to our local pub where we are friendly with the landlord, and the food and service is better than a posh hotel, we know the waitresses, so when they are off duty we normally buy them a drink
Tipping for good service is important to me. The servers are only paid a couple bucks an hour and then get to keep their tips. A good server can make a bundle off tips. We try to leave 15% if we get good service.
I think good service is when they take your order in a timely fashion, bring your food while it's still hot, refill the coffee or drinks before you empty the glass. And ask if there is anything else they can get for you just before you are finished.
I hate when they keep coming back 16 times while I'm chewing to ask if everything is ok. One time after being asked so many times I said " Would I still be chewing if it wasn't ok???"
I fill out the complaint cards if we have an unusually bad experience. If I complained verbally I may say something I would regret....

Do I complain? Yes I do. The reason being, in my job. being part of management I have to deal with customer complaints, my employer demands almost perfect customer satisfaction. Each month we get a summary of the customer service survey reports. It's on a scale of 1-5, they demand a 4.85% or better. If a family has a complaint it is my job to rectify the problem immediately if possible. Granted we do realize there are some people who you will never satisfy, but the effort has to be made to do everything possible to please. Maybe it stems from me personally having to deal with complaints, but you can't fix a problem that you don't know exist. Most businesses would like to know if they have a problem. Several of you said if you get bad service, you just don't go back. From a managerial standpoint it would be better to know about the problem, if possible, fix it before you lose a customer to a competing business. If you get bad service and you tell 10 people, and those people tell 10 people, that business has just lost 100 potential customers. Word of mouth is either the best or the worst advertising that a business can get.
I know a lot of people who will not complain because they are afraid that they might hurt someones feelings or get someone fired. Well it is strictly business, you are a consumer, you are paying hard earned money for a service or a product. If the service or product is not satisfactory you should complain. Complaining about the service or the product does not make you a bad person. If it is so busy that the person waiting on you can't keep up, then complaining might steer the business to hire more people so the service is improved.
You don't have to be an ass about it, just be honest and stick to the issues, don't let your emotions get the best of you. If I get excellent service, I ask for the manager and I tell them that I was very pleased. They are just like everyone else, if you are doing a great job it is nice to know that your effort is noticed! Anyhoo just my opinion.
How I tip
20-25% for above and beyond
15% for very good service
10% for fair sevice
no tip for bad service
remember it is business, it's not personal!

I agree with you totally Shiane!! :kk The only difference I do, is if the service is lousy, I leave a penny in a very noticable place on the table. That way, the server knows it is for bad service, and not that I am just "cheap" by not leaving any tip. Talked to a few waitresses, and they told me the penny sends the message very clearly.
I worked in a retail service industry (Auto Repair), for 28 years, and know all about "Customer Satisfaction", so I am not too tolerant when places do not provide the same, or offer lame and stupid reasons why I should be happy with their products or services.

A penny does send a message... both good and bad. When left alone it means you are not happy. However, if you leave a single penny with paper money it means outstanding service... above and beyond what was expected.

Just throwing this in. My 16 year old neice started working for Pizza hut about 4 months ago. A few months back she was saying that Pizza Hut will no longer pay minimum wage, they will pay $2.00/hr the rest should be made up in tips. Another friend has a brother who is a waiter, after all is said and done, and after all the taxes are taken, he makes a whopping 0.85 cents/hr. I personally think they should make at least minimum wage plus tips. I went to one resturant and they had a sign, no tipping required or expected, we pay our employees well. I got fantastic service from that resturant!

I'll tell you Shiane I strongly agree. Why should they earn below minimum wage. Pay them a decent wage and get a decent manager. I've been to a few western countries and when the waiter/waitress needs to work for tips I hate them being in my face.. Bring me my food and get away from me is all I want. If I want anything else I'll call you over.. Some of these waiter become bitchy and aggravated when they start expecting things... Just do your job like you should without expecting nothing in return... I've left decent tips sometimes and still recieved dirty looks while walking out the door because they thought I could have given more...arseholesI went to one resturant and they had a sign, no tipping required or expected, we pay our employees well. I think that happens a lot when you have sales people working on commission too. I can always tell when ever I go to a store when the sales staff gets paid according to how much they sell. It's like they follow you around... leave me alone! I'm just LOOKING!

I can relate to the sales commission. Most places like that pay in the $1.50 per hour range and the rest is commission. It's then your incentive to stay with that person until they either purchase something or leave the store. If you know the person is not going to buy something then you want them out as fast as possible so you can get back in line to get to another customer.

Lately we eat out at the ballpark all the time it seems - I have a daughter in little league. I'm getting tired of it though. I like Outback Steakhouse for a chain - great steak and they have Foster's on tap! We have a local sports bar we like to go to when we can get a sitter - maybe once a month. My wife loves thier barbecue sauce. When its not baseball season, my wife insists on eating out at least once a week but its probably twice a week on average.

We have the ability to take our boat down the river for a nice evening cruise and dinner in Ft Lauderdale. When we do I enjoy Shirt tail Charlies. Basicaly they have a great dock to tie up to and great drinks with good bar food and music.
Crabby Dicks sounds like fun :D
we most often go to local southeast asian restaurants. thai or vietmanese, or cambodian on the rare occassions when that is available to us. eat out about 1 time a week, and try to keep the cost down when we do.

Prefer local fresh made dishes, have a restaurant in the area, northern italian, that only opens 4 times a week. They email out the dinner selection the day of. Soooo good! Gets the misses in a very tempting mood.

I love Alaskan king crab so anyone who has it, I'm there. Joe's Crab Shack comes to mind.
I rarely eat out in NYC after seeing the Taco Bell rat video. I know rats are a fact of life but I don't need to know about them hanging out in restaurant kitchens. Mice and roaches are bad enough...

For the chains, I'm a fan of:
Texas Roadhouse for steaks and ribs
Carabba's for Italian
On the Border for Mexican
Cheesecake Factory for a good selection of alot of different tastes
Locally or non chains...
House of Wu for chinese....I love chinese food and have found no better of the 50 or so chinese restaurants I've eaten at plus the scorpion bowls are great
Pagliarini's for pizza. Great little family pizza place, haven't had anything less than a fantastic pizza from here.
Spain for (obviously) Spanish food.
Mr. Taco for Mexican
Pumpernickels Restaurant for German food in Lake George, NY. Place is great, a must if your in that area. They also have this HUGE Black forest cuckoo clock that you have to see http://www.pumpernickels.com/

Have you ever tried Shiloh's? It's right off the BA on 51st & 129th exit. Gosh I love that place. Home made rolls and strawberry rhubarb concoction mmmmmmm. Big old slices of home made merguine pies and cinnamon rolls. Yummy stuff this is about a close to home made as you can get. Some of my favorites there are and no most of them aren't heart healthy. Chicken fried steak, beer battered chicken strips, roast beef, meat loaf, club sandwiches, Hawaiian chicken salad with poppyseed dressing, chef salad with home made ranch dressing. Not many resturants have beans and cornbread on their menu lol and yes, their beans are really good.

Classics:
Union Oyster House (Quincy Market area). 1800's, fish galore, great bar, ask if you can eat in JFK's favorite booth. It oozes Boston.
Legal Sea Food. Consistently rated #1
The Fan'l Hall/Quincy Market area is steps from downtown and loaded with bars and restaurants. Get a copy of Boston Magazine and check out the listings. If you want ambience and a view of the city all the way to New Hampshire, try the Top of the Hub on the top of the Prudential Tower. There are perhaps a dozen excellent Italian restaurants in the North End and don't forget about an all-night bakery later!
I've never eaten at the new Ritz Cartlon dining room, but the old one (if it is still open) overlooks the Public Garden.
Charles Street at the foot of Beacon Hill has tons of restaurants and is adjacent to downtown. If you want to go for a walk, head down Newbury Street from Arlington. If don't find something there from Afgan to sandwiches, you are too picky!

Charles Street at the foot of Beacon Hill has tons of restaurants and is adjacent to downtown. If you want to go for a walk, head down Newbury Street from Arlington. If don't find something there from Afgan to sandwiches, you are too picky!

Many of us are linked to chain eateries when there is nothing closer or we are eating and running.
I love it when someone from Texas comes up here and they think our Mexican food is terrible.....and they are absolutely correct...after eating authentic mexican food down there! LOL! I once worked with a Mexican woman who gave me an earful about our Mexican food...every time she ate it she had stomach cramps at the job....hilarious...not the cramps...just the fact of the matter.
Almost made it to WV a few months ago on business...if I ever do I'll be asking for restaurant help from you man...

Locally we have a restaurant called Spain...one of my fave's...love the Paella and occassionally they have stuffed Veal chops that are out of this world
Also, there is a local partnership that has opened quite a few restaurants, each with a different persona...Pinelli's...I've eaten at a few and have never been disappointed.
One of their chefs left them and opened his own place down the street from my house...Cafe Gianna...excellent Italian food and it is BYOB place also so you don't have to pay $30 for a $10 bottle of wine.
For an Italian chain restaurant, I like Carabba's...
Ribs....Smokey Bones and Memphis Roadhouse
Steaks or Prime Rib...Texas Roadhouse...the prime rib is unreal, you could cut it with a spoon
Any sushi joint that serves nice thick cuts.. MMMmmm!!! I love my raw fish!
theres a really good joke there ....but ....i dont want the more sensitive women here beating the hell out of me ...so i will pass ....

McCormick & Schmick's! I was recently in Minneapolis and they had one there. It's a seafood place, about 90% of their menu is fresh caught stuff received that morning. I didn't know they were a chain until I looked them up online....there's one over the bridge in NJ. I can't wait to get there!
I can't afford that every day, lol, so if I had to pick a place that I'm craving right now....I'd have to say Cracker Barrel! LOL Haven't been there in forever....they have the best comfort foods.

Where in NJ???
There's one in NYC, but I hate driving in Manhattan. The next closest to me would be.....Bridgewater, NJ? There's also one in Hackensack....and one down in Cherry Hill. You might find one closer to wherever you are if you look them up.
Here's the link: http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/
Great place....the food was amazing. Dessert was incredible too. At the one I went to, when I asked for the dessert menu, they brought over a HUGE tray with all the desserts that they had. Not a menu, a tray showing you what everything was....how can you say no to that???

The Steak Loft in Mystic CT is awesome too. When we drive up there, we stop at the Steak Loft for lunch, before we even check in at our hotel. Then we'll go back that same night for dinner! LOL....great place.
