Several of the fine members of M&F work in IT, so it would be great if they could help us with some naughty computer support.

I need some help getting my hard drive to boot up.

Disclaimer: You do anything to your system at your own risk

NOt sure if this is what you are experiencing...but...

Is your HDD making repeated "clicking noises" and your machine is responding slowly while the system is doing that?...If it is...turn off the computer immediately and extract the HDD. This is a common mode of failure for HD where the ball bearings of the drive are shot. There is no cure for this...you will have to get a new HDD. HOwever, in many cases the data on the HDD can be retrived by putting the HDD (after it cools off) into a ziplock bag and then put it into a freezer for several hours. If you're lucky then the disk can be read by another computer. The easiest way you can do this is to buy laptop HDD-to-USB converters (on EBAY for ~$20 or less). I wouldn't freeze a disk unless I have the means to read everything off of it already...

It should be noted however, the frozen disk, if readable at all, is probably only readable for another 30 minutes or so...and it's possible that not all of the data can be recovered.

Either I need a facetiousness tag or you do, I was trying to have a play on computer terms. Maybe that was as well. :sc

Looking at this thread, it occurred to me that the IT folks may not find it as amusing if they actually have to deal with these type of "jokes".
:thr

I think I need a break from M&F, I'm making increasing worthless posts.

Thanks for the sincere answer, but a disclaimer. I put this in the fun zone to imply a play on words. I'm actually fairly computer literate. I run a BSD variant and build the entire OS from source customized for my hardware. I build computers from scratch. I program in several different languages. I'm a geek. Anyway, it clearly wasn't that funny.

I'm serious....make sure you have someplace to put your hard drive before you freeze it...

Sometimes 1 HARD drive is not enough..
You may need to run 2 at the same time...

I am not touching your hard drive, your ethernet cable, your track pad, or your motherboard, or any other parts for that matter...who knows, you may have some nasty virus or worm and if you come near me with a trojan, I may just kick your ass. ;)

When raising the sub-consciousness, and just to be glaringly obvious, I like to slip a couple of ‘these’ around the word.

‘Joystick’

‘Dual core’

‘Vibrating capacitor’

‘USB port, baby’
