Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., his controversial former spiritual advisor, and "do what what John McCain would not let us do" during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Chicago Cubs billionaire owner Joe Ricketts commissioned the $10 million plan, know as "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: The Ricketts Plan to End His Spending for Good." The strategy is one of several being considered by the Ending Spending Action Fund super PAC.
"The world is about to see Jeremiah Wright and understand his influence on Barack Obama for the first time in a big, attention-arresting way," the 54-page proposal says, according to the Times.
The proposed assault, including television commercials and full-page newspaper ads featuring Wright, along with "aerial banners" in the sky, would be timed to the Democratic National Convention in September.
Ricketts' plan includes "preparations for how to respond to the charges of race-baiting," according to the paper and goes as far as suggesting the hiring of an "extremely literate conservative African-American" spokesman.

A Texas woman repeatedly stabbed her fiancé after receiving only a card and flowers from Walmart for Mother's Day, investigators say.

Paige Parkerson, 20, is charged with first-degree felony murder in the death of Clifton "JR" Barkin, the 22-year-old father of her two children, according to the Daily Mail.

Barkin's mother, Evetta Wright, received a call from Parkerson early Monday morning informing her that Barkin was dead. "Paige told me that she killed JR," Wright told the Beaumont Enterprise. "That he was dead."

Wright last saw her son at 11:30 p.m. the previous night, when she dropped him off at the home he shared with Parkerson, according to the Enterprise. Just before that, Wright had driven Clifton to Walmart so he could purchase flowers and a Mother's Day card for Parkerson. Wright believes that her son's fiancée attacked him because she expected a more lavish gift.

Parkerson, whose Facebook page lists her favorite quotation as, "if looks could kill i would be da murder of all my haters," was arrested shortly after her phone call to the victim's mother, the Houston Chronicle reported. She is currently being held at Jefferson County Jail on $75,000 bond.

The couple's children are now staying with relatives.

A new in-depth database of federal worker salaries shows the government paid out a whopping $105 billion in salaries last year for most of its civilian workforce -- to boot, the workers got $439 million in bonuses.

The information, which was obtained and number-crunched by The Asbury Park Press through a Freedom of Information Act request, challenges the old notion that government workers trade high salaries for job security and benefits.

In fact, many workers get all those things.

"They get better pay and they especially get better benefits," said James Sherk, senior policy analyst with the conservative Heritage Foundation.

The database, which is now online, allows users to enter a federal worker's name and their department, and then look up their salary information. The trove covers about 70 percent of federal workers, with some eye-opening results.

The average salary, for instance, for New Jersey's federal employees was $83,749. Many senior executives throughout the federal government make a six-figure salary.

Attorney General Eric Holder makes $199,700 - like other Cabinet-level officials. And Jeff Neely, the suspended General Services Administration employee at the heart of the Las Vegas convention scandal, was pulling in $172,000.

The database also shows the government has been liberally handing out bonuses, with many in the ten-of-thousands-of-dollars range. The top bonus in the Justice Department was $37,505.

In the Agriculture Department, it was $62,895. Some of the biggest bonuses, though, were the product of a special presidential award program.

Moira Mack, a spokeswoman for the Office of Management and Budget, told the Asbury Park Press that the administration has "eliminated bonuses for all political appointees." The administration, she said, has also "directed agencies to adopt more rigorous personnel management processes, and set a cap to reduce spending on awards for career staff, saving taxpayers an estimated $200 million this year alone."

In addition, the Office of Personnel Management says that it continues to improve its pay-for-performance systems.

But Sherk said that while some of these bonuses and pay raises are being handed out on merit, the "vast majority" are automatic, "just for sitting in their seat."

"They could be playing solitaire all day and still get the same pay increase as the best and most productive workers," he said.

The Franciscan University of Steubenville posted on its website last week that it is discontinuing its health care plan.

“The Obama Administration has mandated that all health insurance plans must cover ‘women’s health services’ including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing medications as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” the university says.

“We will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life,” the statement says.

The coverage includes emergency contraceptives such as Plan B, which can prevent implantation of a fertilized egg, but not drugs like RU-486, which can end an early pregnancy.

The school is also dropping its health insurance plan for students because the new health care law requires employers to provide more robust coverage, making it more expensive, said Tom Sofio, a spokesman for the Franciscan University of Steubenville.

“It was our own moral reasons and then the rising cost of health care because of the act,” Sofio said, explaining the university’s decision.

Sofio said school officials are not aware of another college that has dropped its health insurance plan out of disagreements with the federal health care law.

A spokeswoman for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which is representing three religious schools that are challenging the health care law, said that she was also unaware of another college that had taken such action.

A spokeswoman with the Health and Human Services Department, charged with implementing the new health care law, said Wednesday that the department had no comment on the school’s decision and that it does not keep track of changes to college health insurance plans.

The Obama administration faced a firestorm of controversy from many religious groups this year over a proposed rule that would require employers to provide no-cost contraception coverage to their employees.

In what it called a compromise, the White House revised the rule to require health insurance companies – not employers – to provide contraception coverage, mollifying some Catholic critics. Other Catholic groups, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, are not satisfied by the revised rule.

The Roman Catholic Church opposes the use of contraception.

“We’re paying the health insurance company, and if they provide abortion-causing drugs, that’s against our religious beliefs,” Sofio said Wednesday.

About 200 of the Franciscan University of Steubenville's 2,500 students rely on the university health care plan, which costs about $50 a month, Sofio said. He said the school is retaining its health care plan for employees because it is hopeful that legal challenges to the health care law will prevent much of it from taking effect.

Sofio said that the school sent letters about its decision to students and parents in April and that it has received overwhelming support from both constituencies. Ninety-five percent of students at the university are Catholic, he said.
