‘Cornelius’ - a play on my actual name - is the word I've been labelled with by some of the friends who have observed my attempts to flirt. Don’t know what possesses me to be so twee - I guess banal clichés at least fill the gaps in silence...while detracting from the strange expressions, which may or may not be travelling across my face.

I work and socialise more with women, but have learned, sans the reports, to put flirting aside…lest a woman bizarrely initiates it herself, of course! It would have to be in-your-face obvious though, and timed appropriately, otherwise my conversation might slip away to those well-known, seductive topics of work, cars, cats, Russian proverbs, Keira Knightley, Sudoku...

I do better to laugh, carefully tease, cajole, debate or talk genuinely with a woman, than is the calamity of the Cornelius flirting with them. In time, a fully-grown connection may come along, where I can take a moment to joke and fool about, say my stupid clichés, whatever, and it doesn’t seem fake, desperate or ingratiating. That’s just how I come across, many people here flirt naturally, with impressive flair.
