Default Have you done your wills and stuff yet?

We have been putting this off for years, but finally got a lawyer and started the process.

Two reasons why. First, my brother died suddenly a few years ago, and because he had a disabled daughter, he had everything done. Trusts and DNR 's etc. his death was torture for his wife, but at least the estate details were easy.

Second, i was executrix or my mother's estate, and she was sick for over a year before she died. Having the healthcare proxy and other stuff in order, made things a lot less complicated.

So today a big pile of papers arrived with drafts of all the necessary paperwork.

Yikes.

Every time I get on a plane with my wife this is exactly what I think about. And cleaning the porn off my hard drive.

My estate is not that complicated that I need a team of lawyers so that's why Legal Zoom.com got my business. Short, to the point, easy to do and is a fraction of what lawyers or estate specialists do. And this is for a will OR a trust.

I considered donating my body to a medical school. But the thought of 20-somethings snickering over my body is more than I can take. They're already doing it and i'm still alive.

I did some basics online before a trip, but opted for a lawyer i used for mother's sale of house, for the whole deal. He was reasonable as these things go, and coincidentally, one of the kids I taught EnglishLit to when I was first out of college. He was smart.

I do too much around here, decided not to be the lawyer too. But have used legalzoom for other stuff.

My wife and I have to update our wills. We made them up before we got married (but when we were in a committed relationship), so not much will change, but it is still a good idea to update them.

You are young still, but the healthcare proxy really saves a trip to court, and lots of paperwork. I found that out.

Young, and getting into better shape.

Got the life insurance, but really need to do the wills and such. We're all organ donors, but I need to get the wills, and end of life care done.

Very smart!!! Taking care of funeral needs and prepaying for it not only assures your wishes are respected but takes the burden off family members.
I've taken care of all of this myself!

I am so impressed by this..and if my mother had done the last part more clearly, it would have saved us from some ill will from a cousin who objecting to the service we arranged.

We had it all sorted after the kids were born, also life insurance, guardians etc.

Wills are done, but we need to make some changes in them.

We also need to do the 5 Wishes paperwork, or similar documents.

One thing I think is very important - detail every little thing in your documents!! I've always heard stories of how family members can/will turn on one another and I foolishly believed it wouldn't happen in our family. Boy, was I wrong!

...and let's not forget Long Term Care. I know it's something we never think about at a much younger age, but after watching my mom blow through her savings in less than 7 years, living in an assisted care with a caregiver (about 80k a year), I knew that, even though the policy can be very very expensive, it doesn't compare to what you'll pay out of pocket without it! I was lucky and was able to get a 10 year level pay then done instead of paying less into perpetuity.
