Exclamation communication gap by default

You ever notice how when your first married or dating neither one of you could shut up? After 17 years of marriage and kids your just as happy sitting out back sucking down a beer and watching the birds? I'm trying to rekindle that communication and so is she. It's harder than you think! Thats jacked up. Anyone else ever go through it?

No kidding. A lot of it becomes mental telepathy...where a look can substitute for half an hour's conversement. You get to know each other so well that verbality becomes moot. You just know things. Styles become familiar, habits, etc. Topics get weeded out in favor of others.

Then again, sometimes you're just not interested, either.

We have found it helpful to take up new interests together from time to time. That opens up entire new avenues for conversation, not to mention new ways to have fun together. Some of the new things we've done in recent years are get acquainted with new music groups, books, bought a motorcycle, walk/jog together, visit wineries, put in a hot tub, various festivals, etc. Of course reminescing on the past leads to fun chats too. Look through old photo albums together, recall favorite vacations, treasured moments with your children. We also like to laugh together a lot---the jokes thread here is a great source of humor, as are Readers Digest magazines, Dave Barry books, and the comics (and sometimes articles) in the newspaper. Usually once a conversation and laughter get started, it just keeps flowing.

Good luck!!
