Default What public figure's death moved you?

Singer Ronnie James Dio died a few days ago and it really hit me. Probably because I was a teen listening to him and he death made me think of my own mortality.

So, who's death did you see in the news that has moved you in some way?

I was 10 years old when John Lennon was shot. I didn't know much about him at the time, but I remember my mom waking me up for school and she said "The man that sang the song I Want To Hold Your Hand" was shot. That night we watched the news during dinner and mom bawled through the whole thing. I just remember never seeing her moved by something like that.

As I got older I learned what a cool guy he was & his significance. But at the time it was more my mom's reaction to it that startled me.

For me it was Princess Di. I had just had my son, and I was up feeding him when the news started in the wee hours of the morning. I was up all night and just watched. I remembered being at my Aunt's house when I was younger and seeing them get married. And how exciting it was. And she seemed to soooo love her boys. And being a mother then, too, made my heart just ache for those boys. I still do, knowing they are at an age to get married and don't have their mom

John Lennon would have to be at the top of the list, along with Dimebag Darrell. They both did not deserve to die the way they did.... and RIP Ronnie James Dio!

I'd have to say MJ as well... as strange as he got in the past few years, he was an extremely talented singer and performer. I grew up listening to him and was lucky enough to see him in concert. An amazing show. Even my 15yo (who is a punk/metal/rock fan) loved him. Like Elvis, there will never be another like Michael Jackson.

Princess Di's death was heartbreaking too... Luna said it perfectly.

Michael Jackson for me as well... He was my first celebrity crush (to the extreem). Although I had totally fell off the wagon after he started to create the thing be became, its amazing how the teenage girl in me was sad to hear of his untimely death.

Princess Di--I can remember that day like it was yesterday. I remember how the news kept saying she was in "grave" condition.

I hate to admit this outloud, but Dale Earnhardt was really hard for me. Of course, that was also the first event in the watershed of horror that was 2001 for me. I quit watching Nascar that day and have not watched one full race since.

Hockey coach Herb Brooks a few years back. He was thrown from his car during a crash and died. Reminded me of two friends I've lost in 2 different car accidents because they weren't wearing seat belts and were thrown from the vehicle. So please wear your seat belts people!!! Its amazing what a big impact a little belt can have on someones life... I know that has changed mine forever...

I have to agree with Luna on this one. Princess Di's death really hit me hard. I am a big royal watcher and follow as much as I can about them. And this is one unfortunate passing I will never forget.

Pierre Trudeau. Not well known outside Canada, but he was such a vibrant man. I kept thinking of his young children and all he did for our country. Tough to accept I think because you see fighters like him as being invincable.

Ronald Reagan. I turned 18 in his first term, and he was the first president I ever voted for. He was an amazing man.

I don't watch NASCAR very often, but it was a lazy Sunday afternoon and when I do watch I enjoy it.
I remember the crash, didn't seem worse than any other and it didn't seem like he hit that hard, though I'm sure ANY crash at 180mph hits hard. We waited and waited sure that he would come out.
We just couldn't believe it.
