Default The last good book you read..

"The Magicians" by Lev Grossman.

Thought it was intelligently plotted and written - a blend of Narnia, Harry Potter and a whole bunch of other fantasy stalwarts with a definite adult edge. However I personally didn't find the protagonist particularly likeable.

I've read a lot lately, mostly fiction. The last one though was F*ck Feelings, by Michael L Bennett, MD and Sarah Bennett

The name caught me eye, but I actually got some practical ideas out of it.

I've always used reading as an escape, ever since I was 5. It can take you away from a bad situation and transport you to anywhere, any time period. Sometimes it makes reality easier to handle when going through rough times.

"Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno", which is not new, but then I prefer classics.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull ~ Richard Bach - re-read it..

It felt nicer in my 30s. I didn't like it this time around. Maybe I've become a cynic..

Not the last book I've read, but one my thoughts randomly return to out of the blue since since I read it this winter is The Humans by Matt Haig-

^ That's a common complaint of that series. My daughter and I were talking about unlikable protagonists just yesterday. One of her characters she writes she considers him unlikable. But I see him viewed through his friends and family who love him, so I see the sides of him they see that make him difficult, but lovable. Writing an intentionally unlikable person has to have good balance.

A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson

Marvellous writing with constantly shifting time lines and perspectives sketching out the life of a decent Englishman born around 1920 and how his life and the lives in the family around him developed before, through and after WW II, from birth to retirement home.

Ah, a conscientious objector, which is better than an unconscious septic tank tester. I think. Yep, Bryan, I follow a similar grind. The last full book I've read has to be an assigned text from my school days. I tried a little Harry Potter once, but I fell asleep. Of course, it was 3am at the time.

Totally agree. It's pure escapism. And it's a longer, more intimate experience than watching a movie. I didn't really have a 'tough' childhood as such, just a very boring and constricted one, and so found a much more exciting alternative in the worlds of books.

Though I've found getting too lost in imaginary worlds can have not-so-great consequences in the real world...

As a teen I used to do a lot of reading but as I got older and my schedule got busier and busier, I had no time for reading.

'The Slap' by Christos Tsiolkas while simultaneously watching TV series version of it. There are quite a few changes in the TV adaptation. The book is a billion times better!

Me too, I like non-fiction, but more on the science and mathematics end.

Apparently nerds makes good husbands, so I've heard...

Freedom of the Mask, by Robert McCammon.

A continuation of a series about a "Problem Solver" in 1700s America. Combination mystery, historical fiction, suspense, and thriller. McCammon is a great author.
